00:00Sweden has announced plans to ban forever chemicals in consumer products as early as 2028,
00:06ahead of expected European Union regulations.
00:09Minister for Climate and the Environment Romina Por Mokhtari stated on 23rd of July
00:14that PFAS have no place in clothing, cosmetics or kitchen utensils when working alternatives exist.
00:22Per- and polyfluorile kill substances encompass more than 10,000 synthetic chemicals
00:28that persist for thousands of years, with exposure linked to certain cancers,
00:34reduced fertility and immune system disruption.
00:37To prevent further health and environmental contamination,
00:40the Swedish government intends to implement the national prohibition on January 1st, 2028,
00:45covering footwear, waterproofing agents and ski vacs.
00:50Sweden joins a growing regional trend following France's landmark ban in 2026
00:55and Denmark's restrictions on food packaging and clothing.
00:58While national measures move forward, the European Commission is expected to present
01:03EU-wide legislative proposals in 2027,
01:06with the European Chemicals Agency evaluating socioeconomic impacts by the end of this year.
01:13Campaigners have welcomed the move, noting that an estimated 12.5 million people in Europe
