La Casa Blanca evitó confirmar este jueves las informaciones sobre un supuesto interés del presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, en impulsar al presidente de la FIFA, Gianni Infantino, como candidato a la secretaría general de las Naciones Unidas.  Durante una rueda de prensa, la portavoz del Ejecutivo, Karoline Leavitt, señaló que desconoce si ambos líderes han abordado directamente el asunto, aunque reconoció que mantienen comunicación frecuente y que el mandatario estadounidense siente un gran respeto por la gestión de Infantino al frente del organismo rector del fútbol mundial.  Las especulaciones surgieron tras un reporte del diario New York Post, que apuntaba al respaldo de Washington hacia el dirigente de 56 años para suceder a finales de año al actual secretario general, António Guterres.
