00:14Es el horno.
00:16La helicóptero crash near Magic Mountain today brought tragedy
00:19a través de la película de Steven Spielberg, The Twilight Zone.
00:22Acta Vic Morrow y dos pequeños niños fueron killed
00:24cuando el chopper came down as they were shooting a war scene.
00:27Rick de Reyes reports it happened early this morning.
00:31La helicóptero crashed just before 2.30 in the Indian Dunes Park
00:36as a Warner Bros. crew was about to wrap up filming for a story
00:39in the new Twilight Zone movie.
00:41The scene called for a nighttime bombing of a Vietnamese village
00:45in which actor Vic Morrow was supposed to pick up two Vietnamese children
00:49and run across the Santa Clara riverbed.
00:52Robert Gaynor was operating the camera crane at the time.
00:55He saw the chopper come into view.
00:57The cameras rolled and the helicopter was hovering
01:01and was supposed to destroy the village
01:05and Vic Morrow was supposed to run across the river
01:08with the two children to save them.
01:09And as the helicopter went out of control,
01:12he was running across the river
01:13and the helicopter spun down into the river
01:15and met Vic Morrow apparently and the two children
01:18at the water level.
01:21The crash tore the rotor blade from the chopper,
01:25killing Morrow, 6-year-old Rene Shin Chen of Pasadena
01:28and 7-year-old Mai Ka Din Lee of Cerritos.
01:31There were six persons in the helicopter when it crashed,
01:35including Director John Landis of Animal House fame.
01:38They were all taken to nearby Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.
01:42Only four persons needed treatment.
01:45All were later released.
01:46Federal investigators were told that the helicopter,
01:49a Bell 205 military model,
01:52had begun its mock bombing run about 35 feet above the water.
01:56Director Landis had asked the pilot to turn left,
01:59but as he turned, he lost control of the helicopter.
02:02At the same time, gasoline charges were being set off
02:05by the special effects men to simulate bombs being dropped.
02:09Investigators are guessing that one of these charges
02:11could have sheared off the chopper's tail rotor,
02:13the mechanism that does the steering.
02:15There was the signs of heat on the whole tail assembly.
02:20And there was damage.
02:23There was heat transference and a significant amount of heat
02:26that then was confined to the tail rotor assembly
02:30and to the tail rotor blade.
02:33Investigators hope to have some answers on the crash by this week.
02:36This weekend, they will be conducting tests
02:38on pieces of metal from the rotors
02:40to find out what part stress and heat
02:42from the explosion played in the crash.
02:44But all the answers in this accident
02:45probably won't be known for another two or three months.
02:49From the Indian Dunes, I'm Rick DeRay.
02:50Today is Channel 5, News at 10.
02:53While investigating...
02:53It spanned 27 years.
02:55He worked in the theater, in movies, and on television.
02:58Perhaps his most famous role was on the TV series Combat.
03:01One of his close friends from that show,
03:03actor Rick Jason, remembers him.
03:06I remember him probably as one of the...
03:09one of the finest professionals with whom I've ever worked
03:12and as a very nice and gentle man.
03:16Gentle and nice.
03:17But Morrow often played the tough guy.
03:19His first film was The Blackboard Jungle in 1955.
03:23He played a teenager, taunting teacher Glenn Ford.

04:03Morrow began his career acting and directing in off-Broadway theater.
04:08Although he appeared in many movies,
04:10Morrow remained basically a featured player.
04:12was best known for his role as Sergeant Chip Saunders
04:15in the TV series Combat,
04:17which ran from 1962 to 1966.
04:21Rick Jason says today's tragedy is ironic
04:24after all the shows they did together.
04:28We did a war series for five years.
04:30In five years, no one was ever seriously injured.
04:33And I mean stuntmen, cameramen, crew.
04:36Everything was orchestrated beautifully.
04:39I think, more or less, they're very careful in pictures.
04:45When things like these, like this happens, it's a freak.
04:48It makes you wonder.
04:51When I give you an order, you do it.
04:53Or you're not going to get out of here alive.
04:54You got that?
05:02Little John, take the point.
05:05All right, move out.
05:07He was a consummate actor.
05:09He was so superb.
05:11He was professional.
05:12It was a joy to work with him and to be directed by him.
05:15He directed eight of our shows.
05:17Asked me if I wanted to direct.
05:18I said, well, I was still learning how to act.
05:21And he was a fine director, too.
05:23One of the best I've ever worked with.
05:24He was an actor's director.
05:25He was completely professional in everything he did.
05:28Omedeta.
05:29Thank you.
05:31Omedeta.
05:36Omedeta.
05:38Omedeta.
05:38Remember he filled the soap.
