00:11The 1972 Toronto production of Godspell
00:14is responsible for a good chunk of comedy royalty.
00:18I can't explain the confluence of all of those talents
00:22in that room.
00:23Toronto was a stuffy town in the 1960s and 70s.
00:28Nobody became an actor. It didn't happen.
00:31Eugene and I were best friends and he was the one who said,
00:33There is a big show coming to town.
00:36You gotta come out and audition for this.
00:38Basically about a thousand people there auditioning.
00:41Gilda Radner got up.
00:42Unknown to everybody.
00:43She auditioned with the song Zippity-Doo-Dah.
00:46And I thought,
00:48that is the most tragic thing I've ever seen.
00:51The feeling was talent had been dying to burst out of these kids.
00:54Finally, pow, there they were.
01:03Immediate hit.
01:05We kind of became local celebrities.
01:08It feels like the cool kids.
01:10It was smart and it was dumb.
01:13And it was smart and dumb.
01:16And so fraud it was a constipance that he's
01:18flocking the slits and clerving in the hole over them.
01:21What?
01:23The director came up and asked me if I would mind waxing the hair off my body.
01:30Too hairy.
01:31He's gonna scare the kids of the madness.
01:33Gah!
01:34It did feel like a family.
01:36Marty and I shared a house.
01:38So it became the party house.
01:40And we all fell in love with each other.
01:42It was a little incestuous,
01:44mostly figuratively, a little bit literally.
01:48Godspell is like the root.
01:50And this tree just blossomed.
01:53I've always felt this karmic connection to that Godspell cast.
01:58That it was possible that I could do comedy because they came from where I came from.
02:06It was the right moment, the right people.
02:08I could literally list 50 Canadians right now that went on to change the world.
02:12It will always be a part of who we are.
02:20Yeah!
