Based on the true story of Montrealer Ken Carter, the “Mad Canadian” stunt driver who tried to jump the Saint Lawrence River in a rocket car in the mid-’70s. Carter's dream was to end his 30-year career with a big jump, a big paycheck, and mega stardom. In the process of accomplishing it, he hired a big sports manager and enlisted the best in rocket car design, with the National Film Board of Canada filming a documentary leading up to the event.

00:00Want to jump a mile?
00:02In a rocket car?
00:03God, it's a real easy way to get yourself killed.
00:06The launch point's going to have to be maybe 100 feet.
00:08You're going to have to be going 280 miles an hour.
00:11The only question is, is this jump possible?
00:13Technically, the physics work.
00:15But why are you jumping a river if you can't even swim?
00:20They say drowning can be peaceful.
00:21Who says drowning can be peaceful?
00:23Well, especially if you're on fire. The water's a relief.
00:25I'd rather drown than burn.
00:27You got good dental records?
00:30I'm Ken Carter.
00:31And I jump cars for a living.
00:35Tell the people not to go away!
00:37Don't go away!
00:38Tell the people not to go away!
00:41There's a lot of people out there asking why.
00:43Why a mile in a rocket car?
00:45Because when I jump the furthest, everyone will remember my name.
00:49We are going to blow the socks off of Evel Knievel!
00:51Is there any kind of respect between you and Evel?
00:53Don't get yourself killed, Carter. It's bad for business.
00:56You want some superstars?
00:58Come on!
00:58Come on!
01:00We have a mutual respect for one another, but yeah, no, he's full of shit and a coward.
01:08Now, as a rational adult, answer me this.
01:11If you're scared, why do you still want to jump?
01:15I was always second-guessed as a boy.
01:17Nobody ever thought I'd amount to anything.
01:19But every time I come off that jump, oh, they respect you now, boy.
01:25The jump looks physically impossible.
01:27I got news for anyone who thinks otherwise.
01:30We are going to fly.
01:32Bring it up to pressure.
01:34I'll be honest.
01:35This plan is stupid.
01:37Yet, Ken's got me believing in it.
01:39And I think we're going to pull this damn thing off.
01:43Damn it!
01:44That or, or we'll kill him.
01:47I think I'm throwing in the towel on this one.
01:49That scout talking.
01:51Nine!
01:52You're stalling!
01:53You're scared!
01:53Of course I'm scared!
01:55I'm trying to jump a mile!
01:56Don't let that big head of yours explode with pride.
01:59Just take my hand and I'll walk away.
02:01You're going to shine like the North Star.
02:04Four, three, two, one!
02:17You got to get in through the sunroof.
02:19You can just sort of shimmy up right here.
02:23You know what? Lose the suit.
02:25If she blows, you're dead anyways.
02:31You got to make me feel.
02:31And I can just put my hands on this one.
