00:00New figures showing recorded rates of depression across Wirral have highlighted the scale of mental health challenges facing some communities,

00:12Analysis of hyperlocal health data from the House of Commons Library found seven of the ten areas with the highest
00:18recorded depression rates in England are in Wirral.
00:21The analysis found Birkenhead Central had a depression rate of 29.3% compared with a national rate for England
00:27that was lower.
00:29The data also showed every area within the Birkenhead parliamentary constituency had a recorded depression rate above 20%.
00:36But Wirral Public Health has said the figures could reflect a high level of need or could partly be linked
00:42to GP practices being particularly effective at identifying and recording mental health issues.
00:48Professor Mark Gabay from the University of Liverpool's Institute of Population Health said the pitch is unlikely to have a
00:54single explanation.
00:55He said links between issues such as debt and depression are complex and research into debt advice programmes have shown
01:01promising signs of reducing NHS use and improving depression outcomes.
