00:00in this video today i'm going to give you five tips to help you hit that out there
00:05the holy grail the fairway let's get stuck into it
00:21now hitting fairways starts before we even get club on ball and that is all due to how
00:27the tees are actually set up we're here on the 18th hole at formby ladies golf club and if we
00:33look at
00:34actually where the tees are positioned on this hole if i were to stand in the middle and actually
00:39draw a line down the center running towards the fairway they don't point directly to the center
00:46of our fairway they're actually pointing out towards the left hand side and you'll find that
00:51with a lot of tees they'll always generally be slightly off from the center line so before
00:57you even hit a shot we've got to learn to actually aim appropriately so once you've got your club out
01:05of your bag that you're going to hit you want to come in and what you want to actually do
01:09is just
01:10take a few steps behind and just gauge where these tees are actually aiming as we can see there towards
01:16the left hand side so once your ball is now in the ground try and actually pick something out in
01:24front of your golf ball that defines where the middle of the fairway is so for me if i just
01:30draw a
01:30little line up here with my golf club it's actually about 15 degrees off the line of where square is
01:39on these tees so before we do anything let's just make sure that we're actually going to be
01:45aiming correctly so we can start to hit a few more fairways and that little tip of picking something
01:52out in front which splits the middle of the fairway will be a great way for you actually
01:57to aim correctly and find the fairway straight down the middle and if i would have hit that shot aimed
02:09on
02:09the t line i would now be playing from the left rough now the second thing that we want to
02:16try and
02:16do when we are trying to hit a few more fairways is think about our shot shape unfortunately we don't
02:24all hit it bullet straight we'll have a little draw we'll have a little fade we might have a big
02:29slice
02:30a bit more of a hooky flight so we actually want to try and allow for this so we can
02:34do a couple of
02:34things as we do this so number one let's use the slicer as our example because most golfers tend to
02:41have a bit of a slice on their ball if i were to get into the middle of the tee
02:45and i were to aim
02:46straight down the middle the likelihood is that i would actually hit the right hand side of the
02:52fairway or more of the right rough so what we want to try and do number one is maybe bring
02:58ourselves
02:58to the left hand side of the tee as a right-handed golfer because now i've actually just brought a
03:03bit
03:04more fairway into play i would peg up on this side here and what i would now do is adjust
03:11my aim
03:11again thinking of where those tees were aiming they might actually be a help to me at this point
03:17but what i'm going to do is say i have a let's call it 15 yard slice i'm going to
03:24go to the center
03:25of the fairway again and i'm actually just going to move 15 yards across which is just inside the
03:32fairway line and one top tip i would suggest is don't go excessive with it and don't be aiming
03:38over trouble if i were to aim here and aim into these bushes expecting more curve that could bring
03:46in some real danger then and if you were to just pull it you're going to be in a serious
03:50amount of
03:50trouble so even if you do have a little slice and it just bounces into the semi that's not the
03:56worst
03:56thing ever but for us as a little slicer i'm going to aim just inside the left side of the
04:02fairway
04:03i've gone now to the left side here and with my 15 yard slice if i were to hit this
04:08what i can do is bring it back towards the middle of the fairway
04:16cutting down there and it actually just finds center stripe just by allowing myself
04:22a little bit more leniency and knowing my tendencies one other thing that we might do and we're all
04:31eager to do this is as soon as we get on the tee get the driver out the bag but
04:36not the case if we
04:37just take a look here this hole the 18th 254 and 264 in today's conditions with the wind being directly
04:48into me this driver that carries 285 yards that 264 yard 264 yard trap that's going to be in place
04:57so it might not always be driver pick a club once assessing what the hazards are especially if you're
05:05a member at a golf club you get drawn into the same club every single time it's the 13th i
05:11always hit
05:11my driver on the par three six i always hit an eight iron take into account what's the wind doing
05:18today into off the right where are the bunkers how do i feel in myself am i hitting it as
05:24good
05:24as i normally do do i actually feel like i've got that distance in me no if not we need
05:30to then pick
05:31another club so it might be a case that here for me we saw that 264 and actually 247 was
05:37another bunker
05:38i'm actually going to pick a club here today a two iron that flies 235 and into this wind i
05:44know
05:45will not get the bunker that sits at 247 yards so tip number three make sure you don't just pull
05:53the
05:53driver actually get something out that will take into account the hazards out on the golf course and
06:00hit a shot that's actually a little bit more strategical but if we were hitting the driver a
06:05little top ticker sneaky tip that i like to do especially when i've got this in i want to try
06:10and promote a little bit more backspin if i were to try and find more fairways with driver so what
06:15i
06:16tend to do here if i were to take my normal tee let's say my normal tee shot i would
06:22have the ball
06:23pegged this high where the equator of the ball is sat just above the top line there what i'm now
06:29going to
06:30do is actually peg it down a little bit more the reason for this i'm going to find a little
06:35bit more
06:35of the bottom of the driver and also it's going to promote me to hit ever so slightly more neutral
06:41or down on it thus that's going to bring my backspin up which will straighten out the flight
06:48i'm going to lose yardage i might use 10 15 20 yards depending on the strike but what we should
06:54see
06:55is that backspin gets up and my ball flight gets a little bit straighter as i do so this is
07:01a top one
07:02if you're really nervy out on the golf course and there's a fairway that you want to hit it might
07:06be
07:06the 18th where you need a good drive to get away peg it down slightly expect a little bit more
07:12of a
07:13bottom strike and hit that spinny driver there that goes straight towards the center of the fairway
07:22and my final tip this is something that we probably overlook a lot in the game of golf considering this
07:30is the implement that we want to hit this with we want to try and hit the thing out of
07:36the middle
07:36we forget that we actually have to strike it good we can do all these things but yet we focus
07:44so much
07:44sometimes on where's the out of bounds where's the roof where's the bunker oh what am i trying to do
07:51with my golf path am i trying to get enough speed should i do what bryson says about ground force
07:56forget that let's just try and hit the meat of the golf club let's get it out of the center
08:01so
08:02be really aware and it's like hand-eye coordination think of juggling when you're juggling you're just
08:08thinking about getting the balls in your hand when you think of the driver here and hitting the fairway
08:14let's think about that right let's put a good strike on this and send it towards the fairway i've done
08:20all my decision making i'm lined up correctly now i just want to focus on getting that ball out of
08:27the
08:27middle to see i can actually get it down the fairway just like that one that's five for five
08:37do these things and you will start to hit more fairways break it down it's not rocket science
08:43but if we do the things correctly in the right order you're going to find that this thing is going
