00:00Hey guys, today we're at Seria. Seria is one of Japan's famous 100 yen shops, which of course, now we
00:07have sales tax in Japan, is actually 110 yen, but as you will see, it is still amazing value, what
00:15we can get for 110 yen, particularly when we consider that at the moment the yen is so weak, that
00:22110 yen is a little bit less than 70 cents, right, US.
00:28So all these things that we're looking at here cost just a little bit less than 70 cents each. So
00:38it's just amazing. When I first came to Japan, I didn't have anything, I just had a suitcase, and one
00:46of the first places I went to get what I needed for my apartment was a 100 yen shop, and
00:52just loaded baskets and baskets of stuff up, and everything's 100 yen,
00:56so you can walk out with huge bags of things and spend very little. So that's cleaning products there, all
01:05those liquids, all sorts of cleaning products.
01:10So, of course, most of the things we're looking at here come from China, so there must be a fair
01:15bit of pressure on the 100 yen shops at the moment to increase their prices, because the fact that the
01:20yen is so weak must be cutting into their profit margins, because they're using that weak yen to buy these
01:25things from China, so it must be putting some pressure on them.
01:29So, of course, there are some things you might not want to buy from a 100 yen shop because you
01:34want some good quality thing, but when it comes to things like this, the kitchen goods, Seria is famous for
01:40its kitchen goods.
01:42They all have them, all the 100 yen shops have them, but Seria is sort of a bit of a
01:45specialist at the homewares type stuff, so some of this stuff is amazing quality, and we still have, a couple
01:54of decades later, we still have a lot of the glasses and cups and plates and cutlery and things that
02:00I first bought a couple of decades ago.
02:02So, it's sort of mixed in with all the stuff we bought since then, since we became a family, but
02:08a lot of the things, I've got a couple of huge coffee cups, a couple of huge coffee cups, a
02:12couple of huge glasses, a couple of things like that that I found in the 100 yen shops at the
02:16time, we've still got them.
02:17Now and again, there'll be a glass that gets dropped in the kitchen, bang, and whoops, glass is broken or
02:23a plate's broken, and it's just one of the 100 yen ones, so you don't care so much.
02:27It's just like, oh well, we had a couple of decades of use out of it, so, you know, that's
02:33all cushions and things there.
02:34It's just amazing, isn't it amazing that they can package this stuff up in another country, and transport it all
02:40the way here, and then hang it on the shelves, and employ staff, and still make a profit at 110
02:47yen, 70 cents.
02:48Isn't it amazing?
02:49Everybody along the lines obviously made a profit.
02:52How?
02:53It's incredible, isn't it?
02:54Volume, obviously.
03:00Don't need to be telling you guys what all these things are you're looking at, but obviously stationary, things like
03:04this is just awesome.
03:06We use a fair bit of stationary in our house, there are all sorts of folders and things there, just
03:10brilliant.
03:11How's this?
03:14100 yen calculators.
03:16As I'm making this video, as I'm doing this, speaking to you now, I'm looking at two similar to that
03:22that we bought from a 100 yen shop.
03:26So, they are pretty good for quality.
03:28Batteries, here's the thing.
03:30How expensive are batteries usually?
03:32But again, all these are 100 yen.
03:40So, as far as quality, it sort of doesn't matter.
03:43We buy these for remote controls, and any of you guys who have kids know, batteries are a real thing.
03:48And we use a lot of rechargeable batteries in our house, but some things it's better to use non-rechargeable
03:54batteries like these.
03:55So, look at that, set of AA batteries, six of them for 70 cents.
04:00Isn't that amazing?
04:02And they last well.
04:03They last well.
04:04We always have a couple of packs of those on hand for remote controls and things like that.
04:11And a watch.
04:1370 cent watch.
04:21Incredible, isn't it?
04:23So, how do they do it?
04:24How do they make it?
04:26Make it?
04:26The guys that make it in China make a profit on it, and then sell it to somebody who sells
04:32it to these guys.
04:34These guys put it on a shelf.
04:36LED lights.
04:38Whole variety there of headlamps and all sorts.
04:44Little cute ones here.
04:46LED lanterns.
04:48Probably the torches and things probably aren't the best.
04:51We have bought a couple from here.
04:53They're not too bad.
04:57Depends on what you want.
04:58What the goal is.
05:00Little wooden clock with that.
05:05So, yeah, we love the 100 yen shop.
05:06So do our visitors.
05:08When we have people visit from Australia, we bring them here.
05:10It blows their minds.
05:11Phone accessories.
05:12So cases, phone cases, smartphone cases.
05:24And styluses and all sorts of phone accessories.
05:29Variety of cases.
05:3370 cents.
05:34Let's just keep that in mind as we look at these things.
05:37Little glass protectors to go over the screens.
05:41Protect the screens.
05:44They've got the old ones as you saw there.
05:46The SEs and so on.
05:47But they've got the latest as well.
05:49All sorts of mountings and clips.
05:55Incredible, isn't it?
05:57It is definitely, it's always a destination when people come visit us from Australia or for someone else.
06:02We always, we always bring them to the 100 yen shop.
06:04Blows their minds.
06:05They usually walk out with huge bags of stuff.
06:07Stuff like this, you know.
06:09Cables need a new charging cable for the phone, for the smartphone or tablet.
06:16It's all there.
06:18Brilliant, isn't it?
06:23And again, usually pretty good quality.
06:26Storage boxes.
06:31Those batteries that we buy get kept in those storage boxes.
06:36Awesome.
06:39Oh, yeah, pretty good toy section.
06:41Those of you, again, those of you who have kids, little kids, you know.
06:44It's just an endless amount of stuff you can buy here for little kids.
06:48Got to be careful, of course.
06:49Make sure it's safe as far as size.
06:51Don't give them something small they're going to swallow.
06:53But all sorts of just little fun things that little kids appreciate.
07:02For 70 cents, let's just remember.
07:05So, yeah.
07:06How awesome is that?
07:07What can you buy in Japan for 70 cents?
07:11Isn't that incredible?
07:14Anyway, I hope someone found that interesting.
07:17More videos.
