00:30We've been doing this for about 20 years.
00:31Finally, we got this one together.
00:34Here we go, man.
00:3520 years we're making.
00:36Enjoy and look forward to it.
00:49This is Norway,
00:50the land of water, ice, and rock bases like no other.
00:56Some of these mountains are over a billion years old.
01:00Carved and shaped by the fields and by the glaciers.
01:03If ever there is a place to expect the unexpected,
01:08it's here.
01:09I'm on my way to pick out the one and only,
01:12the legend, Matthew McConaughey.
01:15I hope it's ready.
01:17This one's gonna be special.
01:18Welcome to Running Wild.
01:30Thank you, Moa.
01:32The dog sled driver gave me what's called an encore, an anchor.
01:36I have no idea.
01:38We're gonna be using this somewhere today.
01:44There's something about being out in Mother Nature that the buzz is that you're just a little closer to the
01:51food chain and where you are in the food chain.
01:53And that's a natural high.
01:55I've always thought, if I die, if I go as part of the food chain, I just feel there's an
02:00elegance to that.
02:02It may hurt.
02:05But if that happens, I'll feel like that was written.
02:09We're not in Texas anymore, I know that.
02:13Matthew McConaughey is a legend.
02:16Say that again.
02:18Matthew McConaughey is a true legend.
02:21You bet I am.
02:23His name brings to mind so many classic movies, so many beloved characters.
02:29All right, all right, all right.
02:31From blockbusters to prestige television, McConaughey has been a leading man and an A-list icon for decades.
02:40Truth hurts, baby.
02:42Matthew also shares his wit and wisdom as a best-selling author to get to know the man behind the
02:49legendary action
02:53and heartwarming comedies on taking Texas' favourite son out of his element and into the wilderness of Norway.
03:00You can't be serious.
03:02This is going to be an adventure to remember.
03:05All right, all right, all right.
03:08Too late now, man.
03:10We're here.
03:11Ain't going back down the mountain.
03:14Coming across the glaciers.
03:16Okay, take's down then.
03:18Mr. Matthew McConaughey, here we go.
03:21Keep going.
03:23Three.
03:25Two.
03:26Okay, bears out.
03:28How are you, buddy?
03:29Thanks, man.
03:30I got a feeling today's going to be a little bit without adrenaline, but that's a natural high I'm looking
03:35forward to.
03:36Welcome to Ronnie Wild, buddy.
03:38Nice to see you.
03:39It's trying to make this happen for 20 years.
03:43Bear is the expert.
03:45I'm coming to his office, and we'll come out of here, hopefully both of us, for the story that we'll
03:50remember.
03:51Look at that.
03:52Beautiful.
03:54Thank you, Prince.
03:55The hook!
03:56Yeah, I got the hook in the backpack.
03:57Matthew and I will be traveling seven miles through a remote glacial valley.
04:03We'll make our way down sheer granite cliffs, up steep rocky terrain, and through serpentine valleys, eventually finding a place
04:12to make camp.
04:13On day two, we'll attempt the largest descent in running wild history, and navigate through a series of frigid Arctic
04:21lakes to get to our extraction point.
04:24They say everything is bigger in Texas, but wait till Matthew sees Norway.
04:32Take us down, man.
04:33That was good, very good.
04:35Woo!
04:36OK, we're down, we're down.
04:41We've got to drop more down here.
04:45All right, that's buzz number one.
04:49The journey begins, I love it.
04:52That was my first natural high, right there.
04:55Just swoop across the left, just a little bit of gravity, making you feel real small, which makes you feel
05:01real big.
05:02Very good, very good. Nice to see you, brother.
05:04Hey, good to see you, man. It's been a while.
05:06You've been keeping it OK?
05:07Yeah, kiddos, all teenagers in the house now.
05:11I mean, it's crazy, isn't it?
05:12How old are your kids now?
05:13So a little few years ahead of yours. 16, 19, and 22.
05:16Awesome.
05:17Yeah, yeah, so fun.
05:18Yeah, man.
05:18But we're still going.
05:19Hell yeah, man.
05:20And we're still married to the same women.
05:21Hey.
05:22You know what it's like? You can't take that for granted in life now.
05:25Because it's not the majority. It ain't happening.
05:28That's true.
05:28And I love the fact that we've known each other a while, and we said we'd figure this out at
05:32the right time in the universe.
05:34Yeah, man.
05:34First time in Norway?
05:36First time.
05:36Beautiful.
05:37Well, this is West Coast, super remote. This time of year, obviously, also almost daylight 24-7.
05:44Oh, yeah.
05:44And the weather's nice today, but the one concern about Norway weather is that it will change. Happy?
05:51I'm happy, man.
05:52Good boy.
05:53Come on.
05:54So our journey takes us basically south. We can see a whole bunch of ravines, cliffs, lakes, rivers.
06:01Just take our time down, all of this sort of thing.
06:04This undulating, pretty difficult terrain, we're just going to work buddy-buddy together, and we're looking for a big drop
06:10-off down towards this lake.
06:14Definitely not Texas now.
06:15No.
06:17This is a big respite for me, man. I need to shake the city off of me right now.
06:22Yeah.
06:23I've been really busy.
06:24Have you had quite a lot of city?
06:25Yeah, a lot of city, a lot of intellectual stuff, so...
06:28Oh, well, you're in great company with this lot and me.
06:32We'll bring the intellectual down a few notches.
06:35Let's bring it down, man.
06:46We have got some blueberry bushes, look.
06:51Yeah, look, little blueberries.
06:53Yeah.
06:54You got to try that.
06:57Mm-hmm.
06:58What would be your foods off the land up here for any long amount?
07:04Well, it's a really interesting question because so many of the great, like the World War II resistance Norwegian heroes,
07:10they literally lived off reindeer moss, which is this lichen.
07:13I mean, they actually arguably saved the war because the Germans were so close to developing a nuclear weapon with
07:20the hard water plants up here.
07:21It was unguarded because it was established and nobody could survive up there in winter.
07:25And these Norwegian resistance guys dropped down and they blew this thing up and they survived for like 60-odd
07:31days.
07:31They'd eat reindeer moss that was in the stomachs of dead reindeer.
07:35So, I mean, they actually were like proper heroes.
07:38OK, let's head that way and we'll drop around that bit.
07:41OK.
07:43So, top of the mountain here, we've got some cliffs, big thumping, waterfalls.
07:52The weather's pretty good at the moment, but also I've known it horrific up here, so we take nothing for
07:58granted.
07:59That's eventually where we want to head down to.
08:02OK, come on with me.
08:03What's the step here?
08:04If you want to stay on that south trajectory, which means we're going to have to drop off this cliff.
08:10OK, here we go.
08:11Be cautious here.
08:14A pre-placed diagonal line that takes us all the way down to the valley floor.
08:18It's going to save hours.
08:19It's quite committing though, if you haven't done this before, because that exposure becomes quite significant quite quickly.
08:27OK, so we've got a line here tied all the way to the bottom.
08:31Here we are.
08:32First time I guess we're going to get off our feet and propel.
08:36As we lower ourselves down, we're going to be clipped into this tight line and it will take us away
08:41from the edge of the cliff.
08:43Got you.
08:43I don't think down the face, what it looks like is we're going to be two lines and kind of
08:48going off at an angle away from the face of the cliff, which I've never done before.
08:53If I do something like this or if I do like a stunt, Tesseract Interstellar, I want to look the
08:58stunt coordinator in the eye.
09:00I'm there shaking his hand in the morning going, how's your heart and mind these days, man?
09:03You know what I mean?
09:06You'll see me do it, it all makes sense.
09:08Super straight forward, trust the gear.
09:10OK, we'll get tied in a bit.
09:13Trust the gear.
09:20Here we go, here we go.
09:22Down, down, down.
09:24Keep going.
09:26And then we're good.
09:29So this will be the committing bit.
09:31The mast will just initially drop off.
09:40It's definitely more slippery and awkward than it looks.
09:47You know you're technically strapped in, you know logically you're good, but it's still an abnormal thing to do physiologically.
10:00That's part of the buzz.
10:01OK, we're good.
10:07It's definitely quite committing if you've never done that before once you go over the edge and look down.
10:14You'll definitely get what he's calling the buzz.
10:24The unknown is what's exciting. You start to feel smaller and that's the beginning of the humility.
10:32You're never taking this for granted.
10:34Just the sheer vastness of Mother Nature.
10:38It feels alive now, you know.
10:40We'll go see what we can overcome.
10:42And after you overcome it, then you start feeling bigger.
10:48Right now, feeling good and small.
10:53You're good.
10:54Yeah, pull it back and then go for it.
11:07OK, we're good. You're good.
11:21Trust the gear.
11:27I know, mathematically, and the science says all this stuff can hold you and I get it.
11:32But I wasn't there when they were twining this rope.
11:37And me, I just kind of wanted to see him do it.
11:43Trust the gear.
11:45Well done, Matthew. Good job.
11:57You get a cool workout on this, you mother lad.
12:01Oh, yeah.
12:02I didn't anticipate that.
12:05Worth a figure.
12:07It's not like in a climbing gym, you know.
12:10No.
12:11Body sweat officially broken.
12:15That's an A-plus core-ass workout right there.
12:18I'm going to trust it a little bit more on the way down.
12:22I'm not quite there to the full-on surrender yet.
12:25But we got a day in a-ass go. Let's see.
12:30In winter, this will be under like 20 foot of snow.
12:34Your head's going to be so full of random weird facts by the end.
12:38Yeah.
12:40And look, we got this nice stream.
12:42It's definitely worth just having a splash of water hydrate.
12:4799% of the time you don't drink from streams.
12:50Clear water isn't clean water.
12:53The glaciers so close above us,
12:55the likelihood of any contamination from dead animals
12:58or even animals drinking in this bit of stream is really low.
13:01This is as pristine and beautiful as you'll ever get.
13:05I mean, this is God's fresh water right here.
13:07You know, normally you got to be careful when you see mountain streams like that that look beautiful.
13:12Doesn't always mean they're good to drink.
13:14But just coming across that flowing pool of beautiful Norwegian water.
13:19It's pristine, tastes amazing.
13:21So when you do get a chance to rehydrate, take it.
13:25This water here, that's better than a bottle of water.
13:28Even if they put that in a bottle, it's better straight out of the source right there.
13:40Let's have a quick stop.
13:48Well, this could be worse.
13:49This could be horrific weather, you know.
13:52And we're not counting our chickens because it's Norway.
13:54But at the moment this is as good as it ever gets.
13:57I mean, this is just beautiful.
13:59Temperature's perfect.
14:00There's not even a breeze right now.
14:02So was your first thing you kind of got in the public eye?
14:05Was it unsolved mysteries?
14:08Remember that?
14:10Please don't shoot him.
14:13I wouldn't say that put me in the public eye.
14:15Really?
14:16But it was the first thing I did.
14:18And I always like to say this, they caught the killer two weeks later.
14:21So I was like, I must have done a decent job.
14:24You were very good.
14:27If you think back to that kind of time in your life, were you thinking, this is what I want
14:30to do?
14:31Or were you doing that?
14:31It was, I was in the right bar at the right time.
14:33I knew the bartender.
14:35And he said, there's a producer down at the end of the bar in town producing a film.
14:38I went down and introduced myself.
14:39He says, his name is Don Phillips.
14:41He says, you ever done any acting?
14:42He goes, well, I'll come to this address tomorrow morning at 9.30.
14:45I got a script for you.
14:46There's a role in there.
14:46You might be right for the part.
14:48Next thing I know, I'm in this 70 Chevelle car getting a lavalier mic put on.
14:53There's not a word written for the singer.
14:55And I've never acted before.
14:57I'm sitting there going, who's my man?
14:59Who's Wooderson, right?
15:00What am I about?
15:01And I said, Wooderson.
15:01I said, what do I love?
15:02I said, I love my car.
15:04I said, bam, I'm in my 70 Chevelle.
15:06I said, I love rock and roll.
15:08I said, ah, man, I got Ted Nugent's Stranglehold in the eight track right now.
15:11There's two.
15:13I said, three, I love to get high.
15:15Next thing I hear is action.
15:17I drop it and drive, and I think to myself, I got three of my favorite things already.
15:23All right, all right, all right.
15:26And that was the three affirmations for the three things I did add.
15:29First three words I ever said on film.
15:31That's amazing.
15:32That's amazing.
15:34And then drove out to Hollywood.
15:36Showed up on that guy's couch.
15:38Don Phillips, the guy I met that night in the bar.
15:40Slept on his couch.
15:42And I asked him, I said, can I get an agents meeting?
15:45And he started just yelling at me.
15:46He goes, you don't need an agents meeting.
15:50You're needing it too much.
15:51Hollywood smells you needing it.
15:54Hollywood will kick you out before you ever got in the door.
15:57Because what you need to do is get out of here and go with your mates
16:01from days confused, take your motorcycle somewhere and go ride somewhere.
16:04And we got tickets to Amsterdam the next day.
16:08Me, Rory Cochran and Cole Hauser, my new friends from days confused, rode through Europe for a month.
16:15Came back, wasn't thinking about getting an agent.
16:19And about five days after I was back, he goes, tomorrow morning, I got us a meeting, William Morris Agency.
16:24He goes, you're ready.
16:26I go, why am I ready?
16:26He goes, you don't need it.
16:28You just want it.
16:29Went in.
16:29Yeah.
16:31Don was smart.
16:32He was real smart.
16:33He's up there now.
16:34But yeah, he was a legend.
16:35But it isn't like it just sort of fell upon you.
16:38You went to that bar to meet Don.
16:40You found your kind of niche.
16:41And then you kind of figured out what do I need to do, you know?
16:44I was aggressive, but also, dude, I've definitely had some grace shine down on me.
16:50There's some things I look back that only make sense now.
16:54That's beautiful and true.
16:57Okay, we're going to keep moving.
16:59Otherwise, we'll start getting stiff.
17:01And then it gets harder to move.
17:04Okay.
17:05Go this way.
17:13In an alpine wilderness, there are always peaks and valleys.
17:20We need to make our way up and over this next ridge to get to camp.
17:25It's a good way for Matthew to get ready, as the terrain will only get more treacherous tomorrow.
17:32So we're going to head up over the top of this.
17:35Over the top of this.
17:37I'd ask our team to preplace a rope for us and a Jumar device.
17:41And I'm going to use this device to go up the rope, but it won't slide back down it.
17:45Again, it's physical, but it'll get us some top.
17:48We're going to what's called Jumar up it.
17:50A classic technique.
17:52It just goes one way.
17:54I don't know exactly how this Jumar works technically, but I'm about to find out.
18:05Use your feet as much as you can.
18:07You're pulling, sliding, and you're getting then into a rhythm.
18:11It's just a technique that climbers use.
18:14Special forces troops use it to get onto oil rigs and stuff.
18:17It allows you to climb up, but not slip down a rope.
18:20What goes down has got to come up.
18:24So these Jumars are always quite awkward.
18:27He had a cool workout on the first thing.
18:29This is going to be a forearm workout.
18:32That's what they say in nature.
18:34Full body workout.
18:35I'm curious to see what gets fatigued the first time my body on this one.
18:46Okay, Matthew.
18:48Yeah?
18:48On your way up, just pick up dinner.
18:50It's just on that ledge.
18:51Okay.
18:52I'd ask the crew to leave a local delicacy for us to eat for camp later halfway up this rock
18:57face.
19:06So you pull, relax, put your weight in it, then slide.
19:12As far as it will go.
19:14That's it.
19:15You'll get the rhythm.
19:17Oh, yeah.
19:18I've got to give slack here.
19:20There it is.
19:22That's it.
19:23Pull it all the way down, all the way in.
19:26The problem with most adventures is people get out of the gate too quick.
19:30I've learned that even working on sets.
19:32I used to wake up at 6 a.m. and fire out of bed and be like, let's go.
19:37And then by 10.30 in the morning, I poop.
19:39Well done, Matthew.
19:41I've learned to pace myself.
19:43It's a workout, isn't it?
19:45It's a much more relaxing visual.
19:47Well, see, when you're looking up, it's much better.
19:50Yeah, that's not as relaxing.
19:54But now that I trust my Jumar.
19:57Yeah.
20:02Oh, I see something.
20:04That's dinner.
20:05It's provided by the reindeers.
20:07Looks like it definitely might need a fire.
20:09Yeah.
20:12Reindeer gifts, huh?
20:14Reindeer gift from the bull.
20:17Perfect.
20:18What part of the bull?
20:19The crew kindly provided from the reindeer bull one of his testicles.
20:24That's how much they love us.
20:26A little reindeer.
20:27Ready for the evening.
20:30Sustain it.
20:32Hyah!
20:33Could be able to climb this up now.
20:36Use me.
20:37Use me.
20:38Here we are.
20:41Great.
20:43I like the Jumar.
20:45It's hard work, isn't it?
20:47It's a good one.
20:47Yeah.
20:47It's a good one.
20:48I was, like, pouring the sweat when I got the top.
20:51This one I've dug quite a bit.
20:53Really good upper body workout.
20:54But, again, a rhythm with it, the patience, and really comfortable if you need a rest.
20:58It was like sitting in a lazy boy.
21:00Jumar.
21:01I'm a fan.
21:01Look at Tinder hands.
21:02Look at Tinder city hands.
21:03That's good.
21:04That's good.
21:04Look, the guns are firing.
21:07Tender feet, tender hands.
21:09Shake a little city off of you, McGonaghan.
21:12So, top of the Jumar.
21:14Rookie.
21:15First time, Matthew.
21:16Picks things up quickly.
21:18He also managed to grab us dinner.
21:20You know, it's like, I mean, it's like Norway's version of, what is it, Rocky Mountain oysters.
21:28Okay.
21:30So, that's what it is.
21:32Reindeer balls.
21:33I'm taking it.
21:34That's a, yeah, that's the left one, I believe.
21:37I got the right one.
21:38So, we got one nut each.
21:41Look out for us tomorrow, man.
21:43Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho.
21:45Okay, come on.
21:46This is why we came up here.
21:47So, now we can see the whole, whole valley all the way down to the coast.
21:52Still south.
21:53That's west, the sea.
21:54So, the Jumar saved us a bunch of time.
21:57But both of us pretty tired.
21:59We're a little bit colder.
22:00So, I'm going to kind of cut through that little valley.
22:03And really then, we're going to start looking for a place to make camp.
22:08So, this is going to be a great place.
22:10We've got water.
22:12A little bit of flat ground.
22:14Yeah.
22:14And a view to die for.
22:17Protected from the bad weather.
22:18It's like an amphitheatre of mountains.
22:21These one-man tents are great.
22:22So, we're going to get these up, get a fire going, get the test called cooking.
22:26And we should be golden.
22:28We can have a fire in the opening here.
22:30Okay.
22:30All right.
22:31Water.
22:33Need a pee in the night.
22:35Easy.
22:35Look at that.
22:38Well done.
22:38Yeah.
22:39Well done.
22:40You worked hard.
22:41Enjoyed that.
22:41You worked hard for good on this sweat.
22:43That's good.
22:44Yeah.
22:44It was a full body workout.
22:47And it was long.
22:48It's amazing, isn't it?
22:49And it's true that we usually remember the getaways that were the most adventurous.
22:54The ones that didn't have the silk sheets.
22:56The ones that didn't have the pina colada under the umbrella.
22:59Even though those are nice.
23:00The highlight of the evening meal.
23:04Oh, it doesn't have a great smell.
23:06Come on.
23:06I'm not going to lie.
23:13No.
23:14What would you think that was if that was on the menu smell first?
23:17You'd probably look at a different restaurant.
23:19Yeah.
23:20Something about cutting into a testicle.
23:22As a man, you can't help but feel pain.
23:25You know, it's phantom pain.
23:27Maybe that's how they describe it, phantom pain.
23:29You know, we have got that.
23:34I mean, ball stew.
23:39Well, dinner's cooking.
23:41Look at this.
23:42I mean, the last time we met, you very kindly cooked us, me and my family, dinner.
23:47Yeah.
23:47You delivered these most amazing, like, slabs of proper Texan T-bone.
23:53It was awesome.
23:54And I feel I've under-delivered, I'm not going to lie.
23:57But this is apropos for where we are, Bear.
24:01It is apropos.
24:02100%.
24:08You're partnership with Woody, has that been a fun thing in your life?
24:11Yeah, he's a constant reminder for me to stay young, because he's a perpetual eight-year-old.
24:18Oh, my gosh.
24:19I mean, you can't get mad at Woody for showing up barefoot three days late to your own wedding.
24:24Three days late.
24:25Because you can show up three days late to his own wedding and he don't care.
24:30He ain't never gone through a front door in his life.
24:33That's so funny.
24:33I woke up next to him in my bed between me and my wife, because he snuck through the bedroom
24:38window unannounced many times.
24:40Are you serious?
24:41That is brilliant.
24:44He's great.
24:46I always like to say, the only guys almost kissed my wife as many times as I have.
24:54How many years have you married now?
24:5513.
24:56What have you learned about marriage?
24:57It's a challenge once you have children.
25:00Sometimes we get down the track where it's so much about the kids and we look up and go, oh,
25:05hey, how are you doing?
25:07And I've got to remind myself, I forgot who told me this a long time ago that the best example
25:11you can give your kids is how you treat their mother.
25:15My grandpa, he said, parenting in three words, example, example, example.
25:22I think a man's a prince until he has children and then becomes a king.
25:26I don't think there's anything more important that a man can do.
25:30In effect, man, we're mortal.
25:32That's the beginning of our immortality.
25:34And hopefully we're lucky enough for them to have offspring and it continues to pass that down.
25:39I think that's the greatest art that a man can make.
25:42Yeah.
25:43Is being a good father to a son or a daughter.
25:46Mm-hmm.
25:46The rest is detailed, really.
25:48Right.
25:50Should we try the testicle?
25:52Hell yeah.
25:54Look at that.
25:58I would say it's improved with cooking.
26:01Reindeer testicle.
26:04Here's today.
26:05Life, friendship, family.
26:08Amen.
26:16Hey.
26:17Hey.
26:18Hey.
26:18Can I have another piece, please?
26:21That's a hell of a lot better than I thought it was going to be.
26:24That's a phrase you don't often associate with this show.
26:31Rudolph.
26:36That's really not bad.
26:38Texture was six out of ten.
26:41Taste was six out of ten.
26:43If you just got out of your head what the heck it was, you'd throw the right kind of spice
26:47on there.
26:48Some of my famous rub, char the edges a little bit.
26:51You might have an eight out of ten and have something you could put on the menu.
26:56Happy?
26:57Being out here is a heck of a gift, man.
27:01Mother Nature is God's greatest art.
27:04You've got a new book, a mix of poems and prayers.
27:07Poems and prayers.
27:08Yeah, great.
27:09Where's that come from?
27:10Came from me looking around, maybe something about getting in the early 50s.
27:14You know, we go from being a child, you're naive, then you're innocent.
27:20Then you're skeptical as you learn things.
27:22And then there's that fourth one people become, which is cynical.
27:25That's the disease of aging, one of the worst diseases we have, is cynicism.
27:30I'm not for foolish optimism.
27:32I don't believe everything's always just rosy and great and everyone's always telling the truth
27:37and everything just hunky-dory.
27:39No, it's not.
27:41But to sort of tap out and go, hmm.
27:47So that's just the way it is.
27:48It's just not ready to throw up a white flag on that.
27:52So I myself, personally, was going, man, I want more belief.
27:57So poems and prayers, more mystical, more spiritual, more faithful.
28:02Belief in self, others, potential, God.
28:07No, I think life without any form of faith is, life's hard enough as it is.
28:13Right.
28:13I don't want to do it on my own.
28:15I get it, it's hard.
28:16You look at leadership, you look at, turn on the news, there's evidence.
28:21It doesn't give reason for belief.
28:23You know, at least in the civilized world.
28:25And you're out here like this, you sure as heck get evidence for belief.
28:30If I'm not finding it in the world that I'm seeing around me, maybe I'm looking at the wrong place.
28:41It's a really fun day with Matthew.
28:43He's a bright spirit.
28:44He's such a grounded person as well and motivated by life and by his family and faith.
28:50And those are enduring things in life.
28:52But both of us pretty tired.
28:53We're going to definitely sleep well, I think, tonight.
28:56It's a weird place because obviously it never gets dark in Norway in the summertime.
28:59So you just kind of put the hood up, cover your eyes and sleep.
29:04Big day tomorrow.
29:06Something comforting about it.
29:08Fire.
29:09No walls except for these mountains.
29:11Trusted environment.
29:12Whatever you say, you can blow in the breeze as far as it wants to.
29:16And you got a pretty good idea, it's going to land on the safe ears even.
29:19Who's ever ears they are.
29:21Yeah, something comforting about it.
29:23I've had three really good buzzes today, natural highs.
29:26I got a feeling there's a couple more.
29:28They're coming tomorrow.
29:45Okay.
29:46Those worked.
29:49First night in Norway in the tent.
29:51It's not bad at all.
29:52I got more sleep than I did the night before.
29:54Now the trickle all night was a little bedtime melody.
30:02This feels like probably now.
30:04Okay, let's go.
30:07Matthew and I have 1,500 feet of elevation still to descend.
30:12So we'll have to find our way down this granite mountain and through a series of glacial lakes to get
30:18to our extraction point.
30:21The only constant with the Norwegian weather is that it will change.
30:25And this mountain sees a lot of rain, a lot of snow.
30:29Watch this step down here.
30:30It's going to be quite slippery.
30:35Morale is always harder when it's raining.
30:37I've learned that.
30:38But it's also where we distinguish ourselves.
30:40You know, you go anywhere that's new.
30:43You're hyper focused.
30:45Yeah.
30:47We've still got some journeys between here and where we're getting picked up.
30:51So a bit of hiking in and eventually our way out of here.
30:54Put a smile on.
30:55Keep going.
30:56Yeah, we're ready.
30:57Hello, guys.
30:58Hey!
31:01Yes, mate.
31:01Oh!
31:03Matt!
31:06Matt!
31:09Matt!
31:11Matt!
31:18That slippery rod moto wheel, it's wet.
31:21Sous-titrage Société Radio-Canada
31:50It's going to be bigger than maybe it feels from up here.
31:54That's probably about 800 foot down to that.
31:57Yeah, it's definitely quite a bit more than that, uh, the first ascend.
32:03But we're obviously going to be much steeper.
32:08Fear of heights.
32:09Sure.
32:13OK, let's make a solid anchor point here.
32:16So obviously we've got a lot of trees to tie off to.
32:19Mm-hmm.
32:20These are the rocks, not strong enough.
32:22Have you got that talon from the dogs?
32:25Yes, I do.
32:26You might have been thinking, why do we need this thing?
32:30The terrain so far has been treacherous, but nothing compares to what's ahead.
32:35If Matthew and I are going to get off this mountain,
32:38we have to go down the longest rappel I've ever done on Running Wild.
32:42This is 800 feet of sheer granite rock.
32:47But there are no good anchor points, so we're going to have to use the brake from his dog sled.
32:53We'll stamp it into the ground, tie it off, and make our way down.
32:57The anchor.
32:58As long as the force is that way.
32:59But as soon as you go like this, it lifts out just beautifully.
33:03I mean, it works because all the force is low.
33:06Give that a kick in.
33:07It's only dug into about that much, you know, grass and soil.
33:11It looks a little precarious.
33:13As long as the angle is low, which is going to be as we go over these rocks, that's going
33:17to hold.
33:19Okay.
33:20Yep.
33:20Well, we were using it as what is called an anchor.
33:23But this time it's not stopping dogs.
33:25It's holding the rope.
33:27Trust the engineer.
33:29I feel good about it.
33:31Plus bear's going first.
33:33You've got to really pull it to release it.
33:35But keep it cranked open at the top.
33:37You're lifting hundreds of feet of rope here, which is super heavy.
33:41It'll get easier to get steeper.
33:42Yeah.
33:43And once it gets steeper, just lean back and trust the system.
33:46Okay.
33:47Lean back and trust the equipment.
33:51So, yeah, it's all good.
33:53Probably another 20 meters of this.
33:55And then it looks like it drops off, okay?
33:58Yep.
34:01And this is where it starts to get a little steeper.
34:05And this is where it's going to get scary for Matthew.
34:08You can see all the way to the bottom.
34:12And rope.
34:14I've needed what looks like every meter of it.
34:26I like it.
34:29I'm glad that anchor's holding.
34:32Another big drop off here.
34:35I hope there's enough rope even to reach, to be honest.
34:38I thought I'd be near the bottom by now, but still a long way down.
34:42Wow.
34:44Lean back and trust the equipment.
35:09Lean back and trust the equipment.
36:04L'awkward bit is the start.
36:05You know, c'est à la top,
36:07when all the nerves are going.
36:08It's not yet vertical,
36:10kind of awkward ground,
36:11you've got all that weight of rope,
36:12but just trust it, keep moving,
36:14and once it gets steeper,
36:16it will start to flow,
36:17and that rope will run smoother.
36:19...
36:29An adventure's going to put yourself
36:31in a place that you do not know.
36:34I do not want to do this,
36:36I've never done this before,
36:37but I'm going to overcome that fear.
36:41I'm usually better in real life
36:43than I am in my dreams.
36:45My dreams, I never get the girl,
36:46I don't make the jump.
36:47I think belief is actually the original dream.
36:51So, I have to believe in myself.
36:53There we go, baby.
36:57Do I have a plan?
36:58No, I'm going to let it come to me.
37:00I'm taking my time.
37:01Play chess with the mountain a little bit.
37:04This kind of thing is one of those drugs
37:06that money can't buy.
37:08This is not my, necessarily, comfort zone,
37:11but the experience,
37:12I'm sure it'll be something
37:13I damn sure remember.
37:16People maybe have rappelled in a gym
37:18or on a climbing wall
37:19that's all nice and controlled,
37:21but it's different out here.
37:22But he's got that glint in his eye,
37:24and you can't cheat your way there,
37:25you've got to earn that.
37:26And this is why I love this stuff.
37:34You're doing well.
37:35This is a big one, for sure.
37:38Yes!
37:40Good effort.
37:46Oh, that was big.
37:49I've got to admit,
37:50it was longer than I thought.
37:52You do have to trust your blind spot, mate.
37:54I'm betting I was a few inches further back,
37:56leaning back, trusting it,
37:58than I was on the first one, on that one.
38:01It gives you more stability,
38:02you feel more balance.
38:03Once the body weight's bringing that down,
38:05and you're not having to force it,
38:07you really feel much more control.
38:08That was good.
38:09That was good.
38:10That was a buzz.
38:11Proper buzz number four,
38:13I do believe it was,
38:14and the best one yet.
38:16Good job.
38:17That's a long way.
38:17Thanks, man.
38:24So we're gonna keep following this up.
38:26Yeah.
38:26This will eventually lead to a lake,
38:28and eventually our pick-up's gonna be
38:30the other side of it.
38:32Okay.
38:33So we're looking for the lake, first of all.
38:46We've been following this river up,
38:48through this valley.
38:50We've reached this final lake.
38:52I have said to our team,
38:53leave me a really clear red bag,
38:55and inside that's gonna be a flare,
38:56and there's a flare we're gonna use
38:58to call in the helicopters.
39:00Little red bag?
39:01Yeah.
39:03Check out your three o'clock.
39:07Yeah, I thought that was a little fishing pot, actually.
39:09Yeah, that is a red bag.
39:12Yeah.
39:14In typical fashion,
39:15our team haven't made it easy.
39:17They've left it out in the lake.
39:19Oh.
39:20Yeah.
39:21So close.
39:23Remember, it's a glacial lake,
39:25so this is cold.
39:26This is, like, a few degrees above freezing.
39:29All right.
39:29Looks like it's a swim to finish this journey.
39:32In, out, dry gear on.
39:36Okay.
39:37Hell yeah.
39:39Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
39:47Whoa.
39:49Okay.
39:50You ready?
39:51This water's gonna be freezing, freezing cold.
39:54Yes.
39:56Okay.
39:57We're in.
39:58We're heading now.
40:00Woo, hoo, hoo!
40:04Whoo!
40:05Whoo!
40:06Whoo!
40:07Whoo!
40:08Whoo!
40:09Whoo!
40:10What's this water?

41:21This has been full of surprises, had four big buzzes, like natural highs, great fear, looking down, composing and doing
41:28it, trusting the gear, trusting the people, and then conversations with Bear and I.
41:33When you're out like this with somebody one-on-one, you get comfortable a lot quicker in a shorter amount
41:38of time.
41:39And I think the fact that you're both dealing with the unknown, there's a natural bonding experience that happens, which
41:44is really cool about getting out and out and about in the wilderness.
41:47Okay, let's go. Go, go, go.
41:57This has been a really fun journey for me.
42:00Obviously, Matthew McConaughey is such an icon, but the fun part for me is the man behind the icon and
42:07the values that he lives by.
42:09It's about family. It's about faith.
42:11But also, I think he's someone that is determined to live life on his terms and willing to step into
42:19the unknown and tackle the difficulty.
42:21And that's rare in life, but it's beautiful.
42:24Hot air!
42:27Yeah, boys!
42:28Bear, thank you for having me.
42:31We've been trying to do this and come together and take on these adventures for over 20 years.
42:35We finally made it happen.
42:36And it was even better and more than I expected.
42:39Amen.
42:40Keep it up. Just keep living.
42:43Well done, brother. Well done.
42:45Nice job.
42:47Come on, baby.
42:48Come on, baby. Come on.
42:52Woo!
42:54The fight for the flavor is on.
42:56Asia Pacific enters the MasterChef.
