00:41Second half of the 2026 Formula 2 season began with practice
00:47here at Spa-Francorchamps, one of the longest challenges
00:51on the Formula 2 calendar, but one, all the drivers love to take on.
00:56There was lots of track limits coming through the final corner,
00:59one to keep an eye on going into this qualifying session.
01:03It was all a case of could anyone beat Nikola Solov,
01:06who has had three consecutive wins out.
01:09He would go fastest.
01:10Second was Martini Estension, and third, Nico Verone,
01:13who you saw go into the gravel and the barriers down at Stavolo
01:18in the final five minutes of the session.
01:21That is practice complete.
01:23Now we go into qualifying, 30 minutes coming up to set the grid
01:28for both the sprint race, where we reversed the top 10,
01:32and the feature race on Grand Prix Sunday,
01:34which will feature a compulsory pit stop.
01:36But a compound change coming into this season.
01:39It will now be the super soft and the medium tire.
01:42We've also added an additional DRS zone to give drivers that advantage
01:48going down to the final chicane.
01:50Certainly one to watch.
01:51Alex Dunn, his last pole position in Formula 2,
01:54came here at Spa in 2025, which was a 1.57.151.

02:02Alex Brundle alongside me.
02:04Alex, different conditions and a different challenge
02:07coming up for the drivers in this qualifying session.
02:09Yeah, you could definitely tell the opening shots
02:11were ones we made earlier, can't you?
02:13The rain is falling, the ponchos are out,
02:18and there was a decent amount of rainfall as well before the session.
02:21It's lined off ever so slightly now, track looking damp out there,
02:25and immediately a critical tire call to make for the drivers.
02:29Do they go out there on a wet tire and try and get a lap in,
02:33or do they go straight for their first set of super softs,
02:36or do they do what some of them appear to be doing?
02:37Absolutely nothing, and wait to see what the rest of the field are planning.
02:43Looks like everybody's going for slicks.
02:45That would be the decision I would make at the moment.
02:47Looking to the eyes of Nikola Sorov,
02:50the driver who's fastest in free practice,
02:52and the driver who leads the championship by 17 points.
02:55Ahead of Gabriele Mini, and then Rafa Cameron, Alex Dunn,
02:59just trotting a little bit further back now.
03:01This will be a weekend they'll want to try and make some inroads.
03:03This rain starts to fall in the Formula 3 qualifying session,
03:06just before this, Alex.
03:08So they haven't had long to make the decision
03:10on what they're going to do in terms of tyres and set up as well.
03:14They've only had around 20 to 30 minutes to make that decision.
03:18What they will have had, though, Chris,
03:19is an opportunity to look at the track,
03:21because they come out from the support pit lane,
03:24the one they're driving past now on the way down the hill
03:28to the Eurusiona Radiant sweep,
03:30and they have to get round to the pit lane proper
03:34that the F1 are using, and they operate from there.
03:37So that is a great opportunity for the drivers
03:39to see what's happening on the track.
03:41It's definitely not optimal out there.
03:43No intermediate tyre, of course, in Formula 2.
03:46So the only choice they would have had is wet,
03:48and it looks like nobody's going that way.
03:50It wouldn't be a Belgian Grand Prix weekend
03:52without a little bit of rain added in.
03:55It's always one where the weather is so unpredictable.
03:58It's almost not worth checking the forecast sometimes,
04:01because you know at some point the rain is going to hit,
04:04and for Formula 2 it has happened just before the qualifying session.
04:08So super soft tyres.
04:09These are not what we had last year, Alex.
04:11It was the soft tyres,
04:13so a different compound for the teams and drivers this year.
04:15And that'll be beneficial in these conditions.
04:17They'll be easier to get up to temperature
04:19and retain the temperature better for a flying lap.
04:23So they'll be glad of that.
04:25A few drivers, such as Norm Leon,
04:27just sitting there in the pit lane,
04:28figuring out if the conditions are going to get better.
04:31Risk of that, you don't get a lap in.
04:33We know you don't watch these sessions in order necessarily.
04:36Don't want to spoil it for you,
04:37but we did just see a truncated Formula 3 session.
04:41These sessions sit in the gap between F1, FP1, and FP2.
04:46And if this session is stopped and you don't have a lap in,
04:50that, as they say, is it.
04:53You don't have a lap in.
04:54So a decent amount of risk involved
04:57in not immediately going out for a banker.
04:59Yeah, it's a very good point.
05:01You've got to get out there and get a lap in.
05:03This was a driver we saw, along with Mary Boyer,
05:07suffer a lot of track limit violations in practice
05:10to the point where he didn't get a respectable lap in,
05:13did Alex Dunn.
05:14Just looking at the rain on the radar then down at Invicta,
05:19but a bit of what we call psychological rain on the visor there.
05:24Flicks onto the visor and runs off it,
05:27but actually it's not affecting the surface of the track at all.
05:31It's just enough to make you think twice
05:33about whether we want to go flat out
05:35through the base of Eau Rouge and Radeon,
05:38and that is what the drivers have for a challenge at the moment.
05:43They've got two sets of these super soft tyres on which to qualify,
05:47and then they've got a 30 minutes to do it.
05:50And in Spa, it is difficult to get all of those laps in.
05:55Longest circuit of the year,
05:56just over seven kilometres for the Formula 2 cars,
05:59which is why, despite the conditions,
06:01you've seen drivers get out there early.
06:02Yeah, it takes a long time, doesn't it,
06:05to get out there and do the lap round
06:07to start your warm-up lap,
06:09and then a flying lap,
06:10and then an in-lap, of course, as well.
06:12They'll have a plan they would have set out
06:15in exactly how they wanted to do this session.
06:18That might now change
06:19with the rain hitting just before the session.
06:22And the set-up might have changed as well.
06:24So they'll have had enough time in the support pit lane.
06:27And you've got to remember,
06:28so many of these teams as well
06:29running cars in Formula 2 and Formula 3.
06:32So that information gets passed on
06:34between the two feeder series squads.
06:37So they'll have had enough time
06:39to make the tweaks if they want to to the car,
06:42maybe just shore up the rear of it,
06:43maybe get a bit more energy through the tyre,
06:46maybe blank the brakes slightly more
06:49if they want to try to drive energy
06:51into the front tyre.
06:52They're not quite going to get the load
06:53in a full dry session to try to manage it.
06:59It's going to be a whole sort of general mishmash
07:01of cars on the right set-up,
07:03cars on the wrong set-up,
07:04and there's going to be very few optimum ways
07:07to undertake this session.
07:08But it looks like Alex Dunn,
07:09who was off several times
07:11through this final corner in through practice,
07:12is going to be the first man to start a flying lap.
07:15DRS open down towards La Source.
07:17We have a yellow flag out somewhere.
07:19Now it's a red flag.
07:20It's Noel Leon who's had a spin
07:22coming up through Eau Rouge and Radion.
07:25He's facing in the right direction,
07:27but you can see that smoke has come out.
07:29I wonder if he's had a spin
07:30or a technical issue
07:31that has caused him to have a stop.
07:33Oh, you can see on the tyres, yeah.
07:35I was going to say, relatively indicative of a spin,
07:39and there are very few places in the world
07:41scarier to spin than that.
07:43I would not be rolling that backwards down there.
07:47I suppose he's just trying to roll it onto the run-off area,
07:50and he's off the track.
07:51Oh, no, he's rolling backwards down the track.
07:53Don't do that.
07:54But, yeah, park it up and leave it, I would say.
07:58We're under red flag.
07:59Let the recovery crew do it.
08:00Team needs to be on the radio to him,
08:02saying, just stop the car and leave it.
08:04Now they have been.
08:05So, yeah, that'll be a red flag.
08:08Let's see what's gone on with Noel Leon.
08:09The tyre marks.

08:17I've not seen that before.
08:20I've seen a hill climb before.
08:23So, I mean, tell us exactly what's happening.
08:26Well, let's find out how he got into that situation first.

08:30He's not at racing speed here.
08:33And so he's just going to...
08:35Is he just going to spin it?
08:36Is he just going to spin it on very cold tyres?
08:39That was a kerb on the left-hand side
08:41that will be hyper-slippery.
08:45And he's gone...
08:46And he's lost it through the exit,
08:48just at extremely slow speed out of the pit lane
08:51on the left-hand side.
08:54That set of tyres will be finished.
08:56So what he's doing is he's lost the engine.
08:59He's put the car into the reverse gear
09:02and then he's rolled it backwards,
09:04dumped the clutch and bumps darted it.
09:07I mean, he's not received outside assistance,
09:09but reverse direction on the track
09:12is generally considered pretty naughty,
09:14especially under red flag conditions.
09:16It would be interesting to see
09:17what the stewards think of that one.
09:18You can see the R on the dashboard there.
09:23So he's used the topography of the circuit
09:25to get the car going again.
09:30Could be a slightly dim view of that one.
09:32Let's see.
09:33Yeah, it's very impressive
09:34taking that all to one side.
09:37But as you said,
09:37he was travelling in the opposite direction
09:40when we had cars coming towards him.
09:42So maybe something that gets looked into.
09:45And he has been noted
09:47for being the sole cause of a red flag as well,
09:50which sometimes leads to your best lap being deleted.
09:53But we'll see if anything comes to that.
09:55It's only noted so far.
09:58In any case,
10:00the clock has been stopped,
10:01but we are up against a hard time limit
10:04to get F1, FB2 away,
10:07which sometimes we've seen
10:09through the history of Formula 2
10:11can take priority over this session.
10:15In any case,
10:16I'm not sure that set of tyres
10:17is going to be serviceable for Noel Leon.
10:20And this is the problem
10:21if you are one of those drivers
10:23that didn't get out early doors
10:26to set your lap in.
10:27I mean, to be honest,
10:28nobody's really got a sensible lap on the board.
10:31But this is what they're up against, isn't it?
10:33If you don't get a sensible lap in.
10:36Because this could so easily be a reasonably long stoppage.
10:39Now, will Noel Leon be able to restart this session
10:42is another question
10:43because he has bought out the red flag.
10:45He's been noted to be in the sole cause of a red flag.
10:49There could be an argument.
10:50Is he actually going to be allowed to take part
10:53in the remainder of this session?
10:55Something we'll monitor, I guess.
10:58We'll see if he gets back out there.
10:59But there's not a regulation that says
11:02if you've caused a red flag,
11:04you can't continue.
11:07It's normally for outside assistance
11:10if a marshal has touched the car.
11:12Right.
11:13We'll see if we see him out on circuit once more.
11:17You definitely cannot continue
11:18if you, for example,
11:20have been pulled out of the gravel.
11:21Well, it's an extremely unusual situation
11:24to actually be the sole cause of a complete red flag
11:26and be able to continue
11:27without any assistance whatsoever
11:29because that's effectively what a red flag is for,
11:33to allow the assistance to occur.
11:35And there we can see fans doing all they can
11:39to get the best view of the drivers
11:42coming round this sparse circuit.
11:44It is often one where we see fans climbed up
11:49to get the best view possible.
11:51And there we can see the pit lane
11:55is about to open in the next five seconds.
11:59And the pit lane is now open
12:01and the car's being sent out.
12:02So essentially, we've just lost six minutes
12:04from the session.
12:05Noel Leon is going to be one of the first cars
12:07to go out onto the circuit.
12:10So six minutes lost.
12:14And now they'll be back out there again.
12:16I guess the drivers who didn't go out
12:19will feel glad they didn't at the start of the session.
12:22They've got a little bit of, a little bit less energy through the tyre.
12:26Always takes away slightly the, particularly with the super soft tyre,
12:31the edge of the tyre performance.
12:34But realistically, this is a battle with the conditions.
12:36I think looking outside towards the weather,
12:39it is easing off generally.
12:40And in fact, I can't now see rain out of the window
12:43on the start-finish straight.
12:45So I think your second set is going to be the one.
12:47They're in a battle against time now, really,
12:49which is their key resource.
12:5023 minutes on the clock.
12:51It's almost a 10-minute job to get a lap in.
12:55So you're flat out now, basically, to get all your laps done.
12:58Absolutely that.
12:59We can see Rafa Kammerer going through
13:01and incredibly impressive in qualifying so far.
13:05Has had five front-row stars,
13:08including three pole positions.
13:09His last coming at Silverstone, a last time out.
13:13He has been incredibly impressive in qualifying.
13:16That's been really the highlight of this season.
13:18Likewise, the road in drivers as well.
13:20Alex Dunn has always been in the top five,
13:22and until the last three rounds,
13:24it was the same for Martini Essential.
13:25And there we see Noel Leon,
13:27who looked to be out of this session,
13:29but bump-started the car in reverse
13:32and now has been able to get back out there again.
13:36What? Red flag? Me?
13:38Never heard of it?
13:39No, nothing at all.
13:43It's something this session will be remembered for,
13:45no doubt about that, whatever happens.
13:47I mean, it's rolling in the reverse direction is naughty,
13:52but, yeah, I'm reticent to say it's impressive from a mechanical standpoint,
14:00from a mechanical knowledge standpoint.
14:02But, yeah, even at red flag pace,
14:04cars rolling in opposite directions to each other
14:07makes the hairs on the back of my neck go, I'm afraid.
14:11Yeah.
14:12Well, it will be investigated after this session
14:15in terms of Noel Leon being the sole cause of a red flag,
14:18but let's call it as we see it for the remainder of the session,
14:2222 minutes remaining,
14:24and drivers just going through the process
14:26of getting the tyres warmed up.
14:30We've got to do it.
14:31A long way to do it.
14:32We've seen difficulty so far this weekend
14:36in making sure that they have enough space
14:39to get their laps in.
14:39You'd think seven kilometres
14:40would be a long enough distance
14:42to allow them to do it,
14:43but they all seem to want to be second in the queue
14:46in other sessions throughout the weekend.
14:49Tends to be less of a factor in Formula 2.
14:51They've got a little bit more power,
14:52and thus it tends to be all about
14:54getting the right lap in.
14:57Through the first of the DRS zones
14:59goes Noel Leon,
15:00who was first down the pit lane
15:01and looks now to be getting on
15:03with a good pace lap.
15:05Yeah, up through Lacon,
15:07we go through Malmedy,
15:10and it's one of the many sections of this circuit
15:14where we see huge elevation change
15:16down into Broussel.
15:18Noel Leon looking to get his first banker lap

15:22We haven't really seen many drivers do so just yet.
15:25Stenshawn and Dunn came across the line,
15:27but that was with a 2 minutes 10,
15:291.57 with our pole time here last week.
15:31Let's jump on board with Noel Leon.
15:33Through the mid-corner of Vuktuam,
15:35well away from that outside curve,
15:37which he learned all about
15:38on his way to start his first lap.
15:41It's a purple sector one
15:42for Tazinopol Intrapuvizac.
15:45So far, 33.7.
15:47Very, very strong indeed.
15:49The first sector was a 34.1 for Noel Leon.
15:53This is the end of the middle
15:54through the mid-corner of Stavolo,
15:56and then it's a long, flat-out run
15:58on the track,
15:59which is improving in its condition all the time.
16:02Easy flat through the exit
16:03of the second part of Stavolo,
16:05and it'll be brave and flat
16:06through the middle of Blanchiment
16:07as well, I would have thought,
16:09for Leon as he ends this first flyer.
16:11That's why Stavolo is so crucial
16:13to get a good exit from,
16:14because you are flat out all the way now
16:16in towards this chicane,
16:17where you are now using DRS
16:19into the braking zone of this chicane.
16:21That looked nice from Noel Leon.
16:22Don't go four wheels over the white line.
16:25That was very close for Noel Leon,
16:27but he will get a 158.657.

18:16which assists the tyre

18:24have the compound jump too.
18:26So the benefit
18:27of the Supersoft,
18:28which will be working beautifully
18:29with the track subtly cooled.

23:15back on fuel
23:16and so often
23:16drivers are doing
23:17a lap
23:18that they might
23:19improve on
23:20but realistically
23:20it's a full place
23:21lap
23:21to make sure
23:22they've got
23:22the correct amount
23:23of fuel
23:24in the car
23:25because the track
23:26conditions
23:26will keep improving
23:28all the time
23:29we've had that rain
