00:00Someone changed the flight coordinates the night before. They never told the
00:03pilots. On November 28th, 1979, Air New Zealand Flight 901 departed Auckland
00:09for a sightseeing trip over Antarctica. 257 people were on board. The route had
00:14been updated overnight by a ground crew member. A small correction, just a few
00:18digits. It moved the flight path directly over Mount Erebus. The pilots had no idea.
00:23The mountain stood nearly 12,000 feet tall and was completely invisible in the
00:27whiteout conditions below. To the crew, the instruments showed open water ahead.
00:32They descended for a better view. The aircraft flew straight into the volcano
00:36at cruising speed. There were no survivors. What happened next made it worse.
00:40Air New Zealand launched a full investigation. But the lead
00:43investigator, Justice Peter Mahon, found something he called an orchestrated
00:48litany of lies. The airline had systematically blamed the dead pilots,
00:52burying the ground error that actually caused the crash. The men who made the
00:57mistake let the men they killed take the blame.
