An algorithm is already making decisions about you β€” your taxes, your benefits, your city's traffic lights, your neighbourhood's policing priorities. In Episode 3 of AI at Work, we pull back the curtain on how artificial intelligence is reshaping government and public services:
how the U.S. Treasury used AI to recover $4 billion in fraud in a single year, how benefit claims are processed in hours instead of months, and how predictive policing has gone seriously wrong β€” plus the democratic guardrails that now make it illegal in Europe.

Hosted by Oliver & Olga, with deep-dives from Anastasia & Sophia.

πŸ” What you'll learn:
β€’ How AI is processing citizen services in hours instead of weeks
β€’ The $4 billion AI fraud shield at the U.S. Treasury
β€’ Why the UK's DWP AI projects Β£1.6B in benefit-fraud savings by 2030
β€’ How smart-city AI cuts journey times and prevents infrastructure failure
β€’ Why predictive policing has gone wrong β€” and was banned in Europe
β€’ The Dutch SyRI scandal: when government AI caused a government to resign
β€’ What "proactive government" AI looks like β€” and the privacy risks

00:00Here's everything AI is doing inside your government in two minutes.
00:04Citizen services first.
00:06AI now reads benefit applications, checks eligibility against multiple databases,
00:11and issues decisions in hours instead of weeks,
00:14automatically for clean cases, with humans reviewing edge cases.
00:18The IRS runs 126 AI use cases.
00:22VoiceBots handled nearly 5 million calls.
00:25ChatBots resolved over 450,000 inquiries,
00:29with 42% of users never speaking to a human.
00:33Next, fraud detection.
00:35The U.S. Treasury used AI to recover or prevent
00:38over $4 billion in improper payments in a single year.
00:42That's a six-fold increase year-on-year,
00:45achieved by blocking high-risk transfers before they cleared
00:48and using deep learning to spot tampered checks invisible to the human eye.
00:52In the U.K., the DWP's AI Analytics for Benefit Fraud
00:56is projected to save 1.6 billion pounds by 2030.
01:01Then, smart cities.
01:02Adaptive traffic systems reduce average journey times by 10 to 25%.
01:07Predictive maintenance flags failing infrastructure before it fails.
01:11Energy AI prevents blackouts before they happen.
01:14And public safety, the most contested use.
01:17AI crime pattern analysis can direct resources more efficiently.
01:21But predictive policing,
01:22trying to forecast who will commit a crime before they commit it,
01:26has gone badly wrong.
01:27Los Angeles scrapped its predpoll system
01:29after it was shown to reinforce racial bias.
01:32The EU AI Act now bans this use entirely for individuals.
01:37Here's the catch that matters most.
01:39Government AI has power no company has.
01:41A wrong algorithm can deny your benefits,
01:44trigger an audit,
01:45or put you under police scrutiny with no way to appeal.
01:49That's why democratic accountability isn't optional.
01:52It's the only acceptable standard.
01:54That's AI and government.
