00:00Many congratulations on your appointment.
00:02What excites you about taking charge of Chelsea?
00:06Well, first of all, good afternoon, everyone.
00:10Thank you for congratulations.
00:13And the excitement is the club, the squad,
00:18the chance, the opportunity and the honour
00:19to come to join this great club
00:23and to create the excitement,
00:26this bond with the supporters
00:28and to win games and to be successful.
00:33How ready do you feel to manage this club
00:36the size of Chelsea,
00:37given the previous experiences you've had
00:39as a manager and as a player?
00:41I want to enjoy it.
00:43I want to be part of this club,
00:46work together with the sports directors,
00:51with the players, with the staff around.
00:54I see that it's a club with great potential.
00:57We need for sure to make important decisions,
01:01right decisions.
01:02But I think that there is a very strong base already built.
01:06And now we need to follow up to keep building
01:09and building this mentality to be competitive on the pitch,
01:13to win games and to enjoy it.
01:16You've got a long contract,
01:18but what do you want to achieve in your first season in charge?
01:21Do Chelsea need to be playing European football next season?
01:25Well, for sure, that's a goal.
01:27But to reach that goal, you need to do many right things.
01:31And to be part of that process,
01:34how we want to play,
01:36how we want to see ourselves,
01:39how we want to approach the game wherever we go,
01:42that's my job.
01:44That's what I'm really looking forward to,
01:46to have the whole squad.
01:47At the moment, we have some bits,
01:49but early days and happy early days so far.
01:53But for sure, we want to be there.
01:55And time will tell,
01:56but we are ambitious.
02:00And to be in Chelsea,
02:02you need to share that energy,
02:06that ambition,
02:07and as well that hunger to want to have success.
02:13Thanks, James.
02:14Paul Belverstone, Premier League Studios.
02:16Xeva, you've had some players back already
02:19after a summer off, unusually for Chelsea.
02:21How much hunger did you see in those players' eyes already?
02:25Yes.
02:26I'm sure and I have felt already
02:32that they want to have a good season.
02:35After last year,
02:36we are starting from zero.
02:39We have some new faces from the staff,
02:43from the manager,
02:45but they are really keen on whatever we are doing.
02:48We can't really tell that much.
02:49It's just four days with some players,
02:51but you see that the energy is good.
02:53The excitement is there,
02:55and we need to prepare well.
02:58We have time for that.
02:59And I said before,
03:01it's very important that we build the right mentality to compete.
03:05We build the right basics,
03:10essentials on a daily basis to be ready for the weekends.
03:15The players who are here at the moment,
03:17the players who might come in in the future,
03:18what are the most important characteristics that they need to thrive under you?
03:25We need to have hunger.
03:27We need to have the passion for the game.
03:29We need to want to improve.
03:33We are coming in the Premier League,
03:35such a competitive competition.
03:39And for that,
03:41we need to prepare ourselves.
03:42We need to be really,
03:44really determined in details,
03:46really strong on our basics,
03:49how we want to play.
03:50We'll have time for that.
03:52But those are the most important pillars in our game.
03:57Thanks, Paul.
03:58Nizar in the front here,
03:59please.
04:02It's Nizar from BBC.
04:03Welcome.
04:04I wanted to ask you,
04:06Chelsea,
04:06when you were appointed to a fighting Sunderland in the last game,
04:10and they lost and didn't qualify for Europe,
04:12how much has that changed things in terms of the squad,
04:14maybe having to reduce the numbers,
04:17or how much has it changed?
04:18Small details for sure,
04:19but the main focus about how we want to start a competition in August,
04:26it doesn't change much.
04:28The plan is that we are working,
04:30aligned with the sports directors,
04:32where we want to reach the team is good,
04:35and where we want to reinforce the positions that are needed is clear.
04:40Still some weeks to go,
04:42but we are working in a very aligned way,
04:44and this is the right way.
04:46And there's one player you haven't met,
04:47but I was wondering if you'd spoken to him,
04:49Enzo Fernandes,
04:50there's a lot of talk about him and his future.
04:53I wondered if you'd spoken to him,
04:55and spoke about your vision,
04:56and if you want to keep him as well.
04:58Yes, we have spoken,
05:01but as you can understand,
05:02what we have spoken remains private,
05:05but yes, we have spoken.
05:06Do you want to keep him, though, at Chelsea?
05:08Yeah.
05:10Thanks, Nizar.
05:11Ian, down here, please.
05:16Hi, Jeremy.
05:16How are you?
05:17Good, thank you.
05:18And you?
05:19Welcome to Chelsea.
05:20Not a head coach, but the manager.
05:22Can you explain to me,
05:23does that mean you're going to be in charge of everything?
05:25Does that mean you're going to have exactly the same role at the club
05:29you've had at your previous club?
05:30Just outline for us the difference for you, manager, compared to the coach.
05:35For me, it means that we are working together
05:37to take the decisions, the right decisions in the squad planning on a daily basis on the trainees.
05:46I am on that.
05:47But how we want to prepare the squad for which players and which positions are needed
05:53is the work that we are doing together with the sports directors.
05:57directors, and we are aligned.
05:59We have set our priorities, what we want to do, and this is the work that we are doing.
06:05And for ages, you are linked with the moves of the Premier League, most notably your former club, Liverpool.
06:11Two-part question.
06:12First of all, were you always wanting to come back and manage in the Premier League?
06:15And secondly, coming to Chelsea, some big shoes to follow in the likes of Mourinho, Conte, Hiddink, et cetera.
06:24Yeah, of course, the Premier League is the most competitive league in the world right now.
06:29It is a challenge to come here.
06:31It is a challenge in my managerial career.
06:34But really excited about accepting it, getting, improving and learning to get there.
06:46And the history of Chelsea is there, not just because of their success,
06:49because of so many great players that they have played, so many great managers that they have been here.
06:56Some of them, I see some pictures, and I know some of these guys.
07:02So I feel really honoured, privileged, and ready for the work.
07:07Thanks, Ian.
07:08Liam, in the second row, please.
07:10Hi, Chavi.
07:11Liam from The Athletic.
07:12Welcome.
07:13I wanted to ask about Cole Palmer, one of the players you've had a chance to work with.
07:18What were your first impressions of him, and how important will he be to the team that you built here?
07:23Yeah, we have had a few trainings already.
07:29And from the first day, you can see he's a special talent.
07:33He's a special player.
07:35He's not easy to have one of those.
07:39And you can notice his quality, how he's able to play the right decision in the right spot.
07:49So I'm happy that he has come in a good mood, in a good mindset to have a great season.
07:59And we are really looking forward to get the best from him.
08:02If we are able to build a strong team with the proper stability to find the key players,
08:10for sure Cole is going to be one of those key players in the attacking part.
08:15Thank you.
08:17Okay, Davide, third row, please.
08:21Hello, Chavi.
08:22I'm Davide Quinellato with the Gazzetta dello Sport.
08:24You already signed one player at Valestra.
08:27What did you see in him, and how do you think you can help him adapt to the Premier League
08:32football?
08:32He has many great qualities to adapt to modern football.
08:36He's a player that gives you versatility in his positioning, playing a back four and a back five.
08:44Sometimes he has to play on the left, physically really strong.
08:47We need to keep working with him in his development in the adaptation to the Premier League.
08:53But I'm pretty sure, and I'm positive, that it will take a lot of time.
08:59And he has a very good mentality in terms of competitiveness, in terms of this hunger to improve.
09:08So I'm happy that he's with him.
09:09He's been already training.
09:11And we are really looking forward to getting the best from him.
09:15When you talk about the identity of the team you want to build here, is it going to be a
09:20back five, back four?
09:21Do you have that in mind already, or is it something that you want to add?
09:24Yes, for sure, I have things in mind.
09:26This is my job, and for sure, we want to be active.
09:31We want to be brave.
09:32We want to play good football.
09:33We want to compete well.
09:35But above that, we need a good mentality.
09:37I think that that's fundamental, to understand what to do, what it takes in each moment.
09:44It will be a process, for sure.
09:46But we want to show that we are ready to go whenever we go.
09:52Once we are getting closer to the start of the season, we will reassure that with all the players.
10:01But so far, this is going to be key.
10:04Thanks, Davide.
10:04Second row, please.
10:08On the World Cup, it's a really long one, and there are four players in the squad missing, eight from
10:14Arsenal.
10:14How much has the World Cup got in the way of your preparations?
10:19It was already in the plan.
10:21So it's not a big surprise that at this stage we still have some players.
10:28I'm happy for them because what they are living is an unforgettable experience.
10:36Hopefully, at the end, we will have a world champion when they come back to Cobham, and we will celebrate
10:47that.
10:48But we adapt, and we have to be flexible in that situation, and we will have to speed up the
10:55preparation with some players.
10:56But it's going to happen.
11:00As a player, your love for Liverpool is well known, but how much do you love London?
11:06I've always loved London, I've come many times, and now I will have the chance to live it in full
11:12experience, living here, myself,
11:14myself, my wife, my daughters, so I'm really looking forward, so I'm not discovering anything to say it's one of
11:22the greatest cities in the world.
11:24So, in the back, please.
11:31Hello, thank you.
11:32My name is Diego Ariz-Peleta.
11:34I work for Televisión Española.
11:36I would like to know, now that we are in the middle of the World Cup competition, you are the
11:40winner of the World Cup 2010.
11:43I'm sure this brings you memories of that time in your life.
11:47I want to know your opinion on how Spain are doing these days,
11:51and what you think is going to happen tomorrow against France.
11:54And it would be lovely if you can answer in Spanish, too.
11:56Thank you.
11:59Well, I will briefly later answer in Spanish for the Spanish TV.
12:05But actually, seeing a lot of the Spanish games, it brings me a lot of memories from the World Cup
12:17that we won.
12:18Because of the team, because of the energy that they transmit, because of the control they have on the games.
12:25So, we have many reasons to be optimistic.
12:28For sure, whatever will happen with France, it's going to be a fantastic game to watch.
12:36So, we're really looking forward to it.
12:40Do you think they will be able to achieve the same goals you achieved in 2008, 2010 and 2012?
12:46Is that possible for them?
12:47They have a great team.
12:48And I can see them winning this World Cup, for sure.
12:52Now, so many English gentlemen around, they are hoping not to happen.
13:01But, yeah, they play really good.
13:03And they have a great, strong team.
13:07Down here, please, in the front.
13:14Afternoon, Xabi.
13:15Welcome back to London.
13:16Welcome to Chelsea.
13:18No Chelsea manager since Antonio Conte has won the Premier League in their first season.
13:23I believe Pep Guardiola needed one season.
13:26Klopp needed about five.
13:27Arteta's needed about six as well.
13:30Are you confident you will be given the time to build a team which can challenge for the Premier League,
13:35if not win it?
13:36Time will tell, but what I'm sure is that we have the ambition to win a lot of games, to
13:42be competitive.
13:43We want, as I've said before, we need to take important decisions.
13:47We need to build strong principles and strong mentality and culture in the club.
13:54And time will tell.
13:55I'm not going to say what will happen in May.
13:57For me, it's absolutely too early to say that.
13:59But I'm confident and optimistic to think that we can have a great season.
14:04And for that, it's time to prepare.
14:08It's time to work.
14:09It's time to be intelligent in many things.
14:13And after, to hope that we have this belief.
14:17And to have this belief within the team, with our fans here in Stamford Ridge, will be very important.
14:25And just finally, it's my understanding that Alejandro Garnaccio was not at your first training session.
14:31You might be able to correct that unless he might have been elsewhere, et cetera.
14:34Why was he not there and what is his future like?
14:36Well, the situation, we have spoken with the sports directors and there is an interest from him, from other clubs.
14:43So, let's see how it develops.
14:46But hopefully, it finishes in the best possible ways for all the parts.
14:51And just finally, Nicholas Jackson's future as well.
14:53He was on loan at Bayern Munich last year.
14:55He looked quite impressive at times.
14:57He's now back here.
14:58What's his future look like?
14:59Well, he's joining in the tour that we are starting in Asia.
15:05And yeah, we're looking forward to start with Nico at that time.
15:09Thank you very much.
15:10Okay.
15:11If there's no more questions, we'll end it there.
15:13Thank you very much.
15:13Thank you very much.
