A rare Roman sculpture has been discovered beneath the floor of a building at Vindolanda. Archaeologists say the find offers new insight into beliefs at the former Roman fortress.

00:11The beautifully preserved carving depicts a protective guardian spirit,
00:15known as a genius by the Romans. Experts believed it was buried beneath a military
00:20building's floor for more than 1,600 years. The sculpture is now being conserved and studied
00:28before going on display at the on-site museum in Hexham. Archaeologists say the stone object offers
00:34insight into the religious beliefs of soldiers and families who lived at Vindolanda during the
00:40final centuries of Roman Britain and was carved locally.
