In the ruins of America’s forgotten ancient city, Cahokia, archaeologists unearthed a gruesome secret.
It’s called Mound 72. Inside, they found the tomb of a powerful leader, laid on a magnificent cape made of twenty thousand seashell beads.
But he was not alone.

Buried around him were over 270 other people, in what appears to be a mass human sacrifice.
In one pit, the bodies of more than 50 young women were found, neatly stacked. In another, four men were discovered, missing their heads and hands.

This was a society capable of immense ritual violence, a dark side to the city's power. A power structure built on such foundations is inherently unstable. Was this the key to why a city of tens of thousands of people simply vanished?
