00:00Europe, 1555, the Renaissance burns in its last fires,
00:05while Michelangelo paints the Last Judgment, and Copernicus defies heaven.
00:10A man in Provence writes verses that, four centuries later,
00:14They still burn the hands of those who read them.
00:17His name, Michel de Nostredame.
00:25A doctor who abandoned ointments to chase shadows.
00:28A poet who wove prophecies that still send shivers down our spines today.
00:35Nostradamas was not born a prophet.
00:37He was born Jewish, with verse in a world where the Inquisition burned heretics
00:41and the Black Death decimated entire villages.
00:45He studied medicine in Avignon, but the plague closed the university.
00:49He learned the trade of apothecary, mixing herbs and praying that his remedies would work.
00:56In 1534, tragedy struck him.
00:59His first wife and two children died of the plague.
01:03That's when something inside him broke.
01:13They say that on nights of a full moon, he would walk through the fields of Provence,
01:17murmuring verses in Latin, Greek and Hebrew, weaving a destiny.
01:22In 1550 he published his first almanac.
01:25Such a success that even Queen Catherine de Medici, obsessed with the occult,
01:30He summoned him to court to find out the future.
01:37Nostradamas gave him a horoscope and something more, the prophecies.
01:42942 quatrains of obscure verses, full of wordplay and deliberate errors.
01:48Nostradamus did not want the common people to understand his prophecies.
01:51She wrote them so that, centuries later, someone would feel a chill upon recognizing the past.
01:58His quatrain 810 reminded him of what he experienced in his time.
02:02The horrible war that is being prepared in the West.
02:04The following year will be followed by a plague so strong and horrible that neither young, old, nor beast, blood, nor fire will be found.
02:16In 1914, Europe burst into flames.
02:20Four years of trenches, of mustard gas, of a lost generation.
02:25And then, the Spanish flu arrived.
02:28A plague that did not distinguish between kings and peasants, between young and old,
02:33that killed more than the war itself.
02:35A ghost that would return and made the prophet cry.
02:44Nostradamus did not only predict the war.
02:46He predicted the exact year that the plague would follow the bullets with an accuracy that still surprises today.
02:52But there is a verse that goes even further.
02:54A verse that seems to name not only a disease, but a man,
02:59when it says, a great plague will come out of the usana.
03:02Fire in the sky.
03:03In 1910, Halley streaked across the skies like a fiery sword.
03:08In 1918, a meteorite devastated Siberia.
03:12And between them, the plague.
03:14It was in 1918, when a Swiss doctor, Antoine Nebel from Lausanne,
03:20He published a book about the flu that saved lives thanks to a homeopathic remedy.
03:24Nebel de la usana was named in the verse,
03:27And like Nostradamus, he used rose petals in his formulas.
03:31Did the 16th-century prophet predict not only the plague, but also its healer?
03:37Nostradamus left nothing to chance.
03:40Spain does not always mean España.
03:41Latinos can refer to Italy, or to America itself.
03:46In the letter, Henry II mentions that Spain would be singled out.
03:50He meant that the plague would come from America.
03:53because the Spanish flu did not originate in Spain.
03:55It was first detected in Fort Riley, Kansas.
03:58So, in this same year, and in the following years,
04:02There the most horrible pestilence and the most wonderful hunger will continue.
04:07Throughout Latin regions, with traces remaining in some regions of Spain.
04:12Nostradamus died in 1566 at dawn on July 2nd.
04:16His secretary found him dead, as if he had known the exact moment.
04:20Skeptics will say that his prophecies are vague.
04:24But as a 16th-century man described events with an accuracy that defies chance,
04:30Perhaps time is not a straight line.
04:33Perhaps the past and the future are entangled like the roots of an ancient tree.
04:39These texts are part of the fifth century of the book Prophetic Chronology of Nostradamus.
