00:00Oh no, let's go!
00:01What's so great is, I've seen, I've loved a lot of his movies, uh, Branigan.
00:05Well, actually watching John Wayne actually flirt with Judy Geason, all right, is good for a laugh or two.
00:11Absolutely.
00:12You know, they call it a Murphy.
00:14They call it a Murphy, all right?
00:16And that's, he's one of the best movies when it comes, like, you know, with the British accent,
00:20the incredulous repeating of the American line reading.
00:24Well, now, one of the things you also have to keep,
00:25I got, if we're going to talk about Branigan, I got to mention two things in particular.
00:29One is, make it three, all right, where else are we going to get the chance to go on about
00:33Branigan, all right?
00:36One is the fact that, uh, uh, one of my favorite actors of all time is Ralph Meeker and
00:42he starts the movie off because he's like his Chicago boss.
00:46Ranigan, get in here, all right, that's the opening shot.
00:48Any movie that starts off with a close-up of Ralph Meeker screaming in the camera, okay, that
00:53's good.
00:53And, uh, um, also, one of the other things about it is, uh, actually, it actually has, uh,
01:01Well, my favorite part of Branigan is the pub fight, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:05But what's, and there actually is a poster of the movie, a brute, one of the, one of the
01:10beast styles of the poster is a beautiful illustration of the pub fight.
01:14And there's John Wayne there, he's got a pint in his hand, and he's got some other
01:18guy under his arm, and he's giving a haymaker, and all these other Brits are out there,
01:21like, you know, knocking each other's blocks off.
01:23It's a good poster, you gotta get it.
01:24Now, one of the things also about Branigan, uh, okay, about that fight, about that pub fight, is, and
01:29I will, I'm not, I'm not taking a piss, I am, honestly, God, one of my favorite extras
01:34in the history of cinema is that bald, big-mustached Royal Navy guy.
01:40Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:41I love that guy.
01:44On my deathbed, I'll be able to close my eyes and see that guy, and it's actually,
01:48I think it's John Wayne's best moment in the movie, is, you know, and he's like, how
01:51about you, Navy?
01:52Yeah, yeah.
01:53I'll have this, I'll have that, and get Navy what he wants.
01:57Now, the one last thing about Branigan is the fact that, uh, John Wayne did two movies around the
02:01same time where he was, like, kind of doing a Dirty Harry ripoff.
02:04McCue.
02:04McCue by John, uh, John Sturges.
02:07What's very funny now, having been, you know, in Britain a little bit and talking to British film fans
02:11and everything, in America and Britain, it's completely swapped.
02:16If you bring up the modern-day Dirty Harry ripoff that John Wayne did in America, and
02:22you try to bring up McHugh in America, nah, Branigan!
02:25It's all about Branigan!
02:26It's Branigan!
02:27It's Branigan!
02:27It's Branigan!
02:28When you bring it up in England, no, it's McHugh!
02:31It's McHugh!
02:31It's McHugh!
02:32Again, Douglas Hickox directed it, and he also directed Sitting Target.
02:35Thanks for the Blood as well.
02:36Theater of Blood, you betcha.
02:37I-I will sing the praises of, uh, Douglas Hickox forever.
02:41I'm actually, uh, um, quite a good friend of, um, uh, his daughter, Emma Hickox, who's
02:47a terrific editor.
02:48And, uh, and his wife, and Emma's mother, is none other than, uh, Ann Coates, who edited, uh,
02:53Lots of Arabia.
02:54I didn't know that. She just went to BAFTA last year.
02:56I betcha, I betcha.
02:57I'll be sure that we can keep it right now.
02:57You've got the video for the video!
