00:00Two rounds of 16 games, two completely different stories, and one of them might be the best lesson in game
00:06management you will see this entire tournament.
00:08Let's start with Morocco, because what they did against Canada deserves a lot more credit than a 3-0 scoreline
00:15usually gets.
00:16Morocco are through to the quarterfinals, matching what they managed back in 2022 when they reached the semifinal.
00:23And this run has come through beating Netherlands in the round of 32, and now Canada in the round of
00:2916.
00:30Full credit to the manager, Mohamed Wabi, because tonight was pure chess.
00:35Not the prettiest football Morocco have played this tournament, but arguably their smartest performance.
00:41Here's the twist, though. That scoreline makes it look like a beatdown, and it really wasn't, at least not for
00:47most of the match.
00:48For long stretches, Canada were genuinely the better team.
00:52In the first half alone, Morocco held 67% of possession and still managed just one shot, worth barely 0
01:00.02 expected goals.
01:02Canada had four shots in that same half, two on target, worth 0.42 expected goals,
01:09with Stark comfortably their most dangerous player, at the centre of most of it.
01:14That is not possession masking a bad performance.
01:17That is Canada actually creating the better chances while Morocco sat back and absorbed everything.
01:23And remember, this was Canada playing with home advantage and real momentum behind them,
01:28in just their second-ever World Cup knockout appearance.
01:32Holding your nerve on the road in that kind of atmosphere is exactly the sort of thing that gets ignored
01:38when people only look at the final score.
01:40That pattern held up across the full 90 minutes, too.
01:44Canada finished with 10 shots in total, 3 on target, and 32 touches inside the Morocco box.
01:51Morocco managed just 5 shots the entire game, but 4 of those 5 were on target, worth 0.78 expected
01:59goals combined,
02:01and they scored 3 of them.
02:033 big chances created, 1 missed, 3 converted.
02:06That gap, chances created against chances actually taken, is the whole story of this match,
02:13and that is the whole point of this video.
02:15Being clutch is not only about scoring goals,
02:18it is about doing the unglamorous things really well when your team is not flowing,
02:23and then making the most of the few moments football actually gives you.
02:27A clutch moment does not have to be a goal.
02:30It can be a last-ditch tackle, a headed clearance at the back post,
02:34a pass that unlocks a defense, even the pass before the assist.
02:39Those small moments define the rhythm of a knockout game.
02:42And tonight, Morocco's players executed almost all of them.
02:46Morocco defended brilliantly.
02:48Masraoui at left-back had one of his best games in a Morocco shirt,
02:52winning 7 of 8 ground duels and 4 of 6 in the air,
02:56adding 10 clearances, including 6 with his head,
03:00constantly first to every second ball.
03:03Bono was excellent behind him too, 3 saves in total,
03:07denying close to 0.7 expected goals worth of shots on his own goal line.
03:12Hakimi on the opposite flank was just as vital,
03:16winning 5 of 10 ground duels and 3 of 5 in the air,
03:19not only setting up a goal going forward,
03:22but contributing 9 separate defensive actions of his own,
03:25and sitting deepest in midfield,
03:28Morocco had one player who barely lost a single duel all game,
03:32dictating exactly when the team pushed forward and when it dropped off.
03:36Morocco actually broke the deadlock in the 50th minute,
03:39and that is where this turned into a genuine case study in management.
03:43Morocco's own changes,
03:45bringing on Amrabat for extra defensive cover
03:48and Talbi in place of Canous for fresh width on the left around the hour mark,
03:53were sharp and well-timed.
03:54Canada's were the opposite.
03:57Marsh did not make his first change,
03:59bringing on Laren until well past the hour,
04:02and his second move,
04:03a double substitution adding promised David,
04:06did not arrive until the 78th minute.
04:09Just 3 minutes later,
04:10Morocco scored again.
04:12Every time Canada tried to force more energy forward,
04:15it opened exactly the kind of space Morocco was waiting to break into.
04:19The bench made the difference in the biggest moments too.
04:23Unahi's goal,
04:24Morocco's second,
04:25came from a beautifully worked set-piece combination
04:28that pulled him free at precisely the right second.
04:32Sofian Rahimi,
04:33on for the injured Sabiri,
04:35finished off Morocco's third with real composure,
04:37and Brahim Diaz quietly ran the closing stages,
04:41ending the night with two assists
04:43and 15 of his 19 passes finding a teammate.
04:46None of this was Morocco's best football of the tournament,
04:49but this is still a team with genuine pedigree.
04:53Remember,
04:54most of this group already won an under-20 World Cup,
04:57beating Argentina,
04:58Brazil,
04:59and Germany along the way.
05:00They know how to handle a big occasion,
05:03and tonight was another example of exactly that.
05:06Now,
05:07the other round of 16 game,
05:09and I will be up front about this one.
05:11Calling it a football match feels generous.
05:13France got past Paraguay 1-0,
05:16but that scoreline tells you almost nothing
05:18about what actually happened out there.
05:21This was genuinely one of the worst
05:23refereeing performances of the tournament.
05:26Paraguay set out from kickoff to rough France up,
05:29physically and mentally,
05:30and somehow finished the match with zero yellow cards,
05:33zero,
05:34despite a blow to Mbappe's face,
05:37constant niggling fouls,
05:38and players like Galarza getting right up
05:41in France's faces near the touchline.
05:43Remarkably,
05:44this is the first time since the 1998 World Cup
05:48that Paraguay have played a World Cup match
05:50without picking up a single card,
05:52which tells you plenty about how much
05:54the officials let slide tonight.
05:56To France's credit,
05:57they did not back down from any of it.
06:00Mbappe more or less said afterward
06:02that if Paraguay expected France
06:04to show up in a tuxedo,
06:06they had badly misjudged the situation,
06:09that France came ready to match that physicality
06:12if the game demanded it,
06:13and that now it is over,
06:15they can get back to playing actual football.
06:18Tactically,
06:19France got their starting lineup slightly wrong.
06:21Dembele was pushed too wide
06:23against a defense sitting deep
06:25and never really found the space
06:27to cut inside and threaten.
06:29Barcola is a genuinely excellent runner with the ball,
06:33but against a packed low block,
06:35you need someone who can manipulate tight spaces
06:37rather than just sprint into them,
06:39and that is exactly why bringing on desired Dea for Barcola
06:43alongside Cherki for Dembele
06:46completely changed the shape of the game.
06:48Dea's close control
06:49and his habit of shifting the angle of his run
06:52were what finally unlocked Paraguay's defense,
06:55and it was his dribble past two defenders
06:57that won the penalty France needed.
06:59A few people online questioned the call,
07:02but watch it back.
07:03He is clipped from behind mid-stride
07:05before he can get a shot away.
07:07That is a penalty every single time.
07:09Mbappe stepped up,
07:11sent the goalkeeper the wrong way,
07:12and finished with total composure.
07:15In midfield,
07:16Kone was excellent all night,
07:18breaking up play
07:18and winning his tackles again and again,
07:21exactly what France needed
07:22against that kind of approach.
07:24The numbers back up
07:25just how one-sided this actually was.
07:28Paraguay finished with 24% possession
07:31and five shots,
07:32none of them on target.
07:33This was not a team that came to play football,
07:36though to be fair to them,
07:37when you are that clearly the underdog,
07:40making the game as scrappy and physical as possible
07:43is sometimes the only realistic route through.
07:45If there is one real positive for Paraguay
07:48to take from tonight,
07:49it is their goalkeeper.
07:50This is a keeper who already knocked Germany
07:53out in the round of 32
07:54and then made four more saves
07:56against France tonight
07:58on top of another man of the match award,
08:00and there is a genuinely remarkable story behind him.
08:04Not long ago,
08:05he was completely broke,
08:06selling his own match kit and boots
08:08just to feed his family
08:10after his daughter was born,
08:11walking into this World Cup
08:13with only six caps to his name
08:15and barely a reputation outside Paraguay.
08:18Nobody knew who he was a month ago.
08:20Everybody does now.
08:22So here is what is coming.
08:24Morocco will face France in the quarterfinal,
08:26and unlike tonight's game,
08:28expect actual football.
08:30Both sides can genuinely play,
08:32and neither one will need to hide behind fouls to survive.
08:35Beyond that,
08:36the road could lead to Spain
08:38or whoever comes through Portugal versus Belgium
08:40in the semifinal.
08:42And later today,
08:43we also have Brazil against Norway,
08:45with Mexico against England
08:47and Argentina against Egypt
08:49still to come in this round.
08:50Let me know what you thought of both these games
08:53down in the comments,
08:54and catch you in the next video.
