03:06Now she gets fired
03:07Can't get it to go however
03:09Late whistle on that one
03:10And she'll go to the free throw line for two
03:14Frida Buhner
03:16Second round pick in this year's draft
03:18The rookie from Germany
03:22Plays on the German national team with the likes of Sabley and Leone Phoebus
03:30Can't get that one to go
03:35Now Fire have done a really good job of attacking the rim late in the first half and early on
03:41in the second half
03:41It's paying off with getting to the free throw line which Sonya Raman was frustrated
03:45They got 27 free throws in that first matchup in Portland
03:52Portland now 11 of 12 from the free throw line is really the only place they're shooting well
03:57They're at 30% from the field and 15% from three point range is 3 of 20 but Seattle's
04:04not much better they're 3 of 14
04:10Full block thinks about it gives it off
04:13Behind the head pass Buhner in the corner and gets it to go
04:17Free to Buhner knocking down the triple
04:20She's now got eight
04:22And the biggest lead of the game for Portland at six and that was a pretty assist
04:28behind the head
04:29hard to defend
04:33Katie Lu
04:34Big three takes it and makes it needed that from Katie Lu both for her own well-being as she
04:41hasn't hit one now since June the
04:4322nd and then also for the team they're down by three only and I love the confidence with which she
04:48shot it the first shot
04:50Kind of up fakes created more space for herself in rhythm
04:52Winterburn goes in strong amongst the trees wow how about that drive
04:57Yeah over Awa bomb that is not easy to do
05:02Full court pressure here providing some problems for Seattle's it gets knocked out of bounds
05:09Katie Lu with a nice up fake
05:13Defense out of position
05:17And Holly on the other end
05:21Could have been an and one there as he kind of came in and took a shot on her as
05:25after she put it up
05:28Two possession games I have cooked back in
05:32As is Steph Dolson Dom comes back in the game as well
05:37Faked by Heidemann skip pass I have cooked three that was off
05:43And loose ball foul right here
05:47It's gonna go on Buehner, so we'll keep it Seattle basketball
05:50It's a tough task trying to box out Dom Malanga
05:53If she keeps attacking and continues to go after those old boards
05:57It just causes problems for Portland. I mean they have a huge size advantage right now
06:01Seattle way bigger than Portland
06:04That was such a beautiful look at fade away from Dom
06:11Parker hook pass three ball winter burn playing with some confidence
06:15Juner the offensive rebound tied up by Golsan nicely done good hands there by step
06:26Every single board you need right now
06:30That's giving up the offensive rebound, but at least step trying to make up for it tying her up
06:35I don't want to be in a wrestling match for the basketball step those absolutely not you're gonna lose that
06:39one
06:40There is no question about it. She is very strong
06:45I got to feel it in person that's right when she played you played against her at you when you're
06:50at Idaho
06:53That was NCAA tournament game right yeah, that was the beginning of Brianna Stewart's for Pete Wow, and they beat
06:59Stanford
06:59I like for the next a few games
07:03Heidemann drives in pulls up from the free-throw line cash boy. There's been a couple just in and out
07:09good looks
07:11Heidemann and Dom
07:12Either of them go
07:15Winter burn drives in they were really overplaying her left hand or right hand there. So she went left
07:20Got the feed and now it's a seven-point game
07:25Extends the biggest of the game
07:27Portland moving well off the ball. I mean that looked like a wide-open drive, but the help came and
07:31that's what opened up
07:33Steph turns no
07:37Flying into the first row
07:41Now on Seattle
07:43But they just say it went out of bounds
07:47It's gonna go on stuff those
07:52Portland is doing a really good job guarding Seattle's on ball screens
07:55It's either a hard hedge they're recovering so quickly
07:59And the Tisha usually so good at coming off those screens making a decision
08:04But I think that's crucial defense
08:07The free throw line hey fans love your smile again and as little as 24 hours with smiles by design
08:14delivering unmatched results

24:29But Dom continuing to put pressure on this defense by attacking the offensive glass.
24:35Nobody, I think as a coach, nobody scares me more in terms of getting offensive rebounds than Dom Malanga.
24:42The length that she has, the ability to get up, the vertical leap.
24:48Seattle is just two for their last 12 from the field.
24:52And yet, it's a four-point game.
24:54I've been thinking, give me two minutes offense.
24:57And they've got to win, because their D has been spectacular.
25:02Portland's only had three field goals since the eight-minute mark in this fourth quarter.
25:08I think we see an emphasis getting the ball to Dom late.
25:12You just saw Tops in the WNBA right up there with the best.
25:16Ziya giving great effort.
25:18Here's Carlton, who's his handle on it.
25:20Guarded by Flauze.
25:22Seattle defense, just beautiful right now.
25:25Forcing the tough shot.
25:26No good.
25:26Rebound by Carlton.
25:30Fans are ready to just go nuts if Seattle could have corralled that.
25:34Seven on the shot clock.
25:36Crowd check defense.
25:37Tops behind the back.
25:39Leight gives it off.
25:42Three ball.
25:43Aixler, no.
25:44Tipped around.
25:45Portland has it again.
25:49This is what killed Seattle against Phoenix.
25:55Carlton drives.
25:57And one as she gets in.
26:02That is the sixth and one of the game for Portland.
26:05Yeah, you're giving them more opportunities.
26:07Offensive rebounds at this point in the game.
26:10Those extra possessions mean everything.
26:12And there are a few missed box outs.
26:14Sarah Ashley Barker completely untouched.
26:16And I get that it was made with the second offensive rebound,
26:19so the defense isn't set.
26:20But at this point in the game, you have to go find a body
26:24and make sure they don't get the bird.
26:25Well, they're running at the two.
26:27Five-point game.
26:29Portland is just 4 of 25 for three.
26:33They're tied up to Dom, looking up top.
26:37Kick to the corner.
26:40Plage feeds Dom inside.
26:43The overplay, nicely done there by Aixler,
26:46who plays much taller than she is.
26:49Yeah.
26:50I mean, Aixler plays like she's 6'7".
26:531, 2, 2, 3, 2, 3.
26:571, 2, 3, 2, 3.
26:57Atisha, the inbound.
26:58Just 6 on the shot clock.
26:59See where they go here.
27:04Up top to Awa, tipped out, got to go.
27:07Four seconds left.
27:08Palm's got it.
27:09She's going to have to fire away, way downtown, off the park.
27:13Sword in, rebound by Barker.
27:15That was a smart touch by Meg Gustafson for Portland.
27:19By touching it and throwing it basically in the backcourt for Seattle.
27:22This could be a crushing blow.
27:24The Portland scores here.
27:27Late, back to Gustafson.
27:29Drives in on Sayah and scores, and yet another three-point play.
27:36They have seven of those.
27:38They only have four conventional threes on the game.
27:41It's back-breaking.
27:43Either you make sure, and it's easier said than done, right?
27:46Make sure they don't make the bucket or no foul there.
27:51I mean, that's a very light touch there by Zaya.
27:53But, again, they've been calling it all game.
27:55So, you've got to adjust if you're the defense.
27:57Time out by Sonja Rahman.
28:00A whole lot of frustration on the faces of one team
28:03and elation on the faces of the Portland Fire
28:06as they look to go up 2-0 on the season series
28:12with a couple games yet to go.
28:14Eight-point game not over yet,
28:16but it's at the point now where you've got to score every possession,
28:19and some of them need to be threes.
28:21Yeah, and you can see the frustration here on the Storm bench.
28:25It's this late-game scenario.
28:27They've been right in so many games.
28:29They've been comfortable with it.
28:31But, I mean, you look at from three-point range, both teams.
28:34I mean, Portland has missed 21 threes.
28:37The Storm have missed 19.
28:38A lot of your possessions have been just rough in and outs.
28:43But I think you've got to get the ball inside to Dom.
28:46I think Natisha needs to continue to initiate any sort of offense.
28:51But it's just been a struggle to get the ball inside to Dom and to Awa.
28:57Dom with just 13 points, 4 of 12, just not an efficient night.
29:01And Portland, they've given up 100 points in each of their last three games,
29:04so you thought you'd come in and take advantage of this defense
29:07that ranks third worst in terms of opponent field goal percentage.
29:11But they figured something out against Chicago.
29:13They played two bad losses to Chicago,
29:16and they fixed their post-defense a little bit against the Washington Mystics
29:19to at least get to quadruple overtime.
29:22Seattle's three-point defense now in the season is under 30%.
29:27They are number one in the WNBA.
29:29The problem is they have the worst offensive rebounding percentage allowed in the league.
29:35So teams are missing a lot of threes against Seattle,
29:39but then they're also rebounding at a very high percentage against Seattle on those misses.
29:45And we saw that here.
29:47Bomb feeds Heideman over in the corner.
29:52It is hard, harder to get a defensive rebound, I guess, after a three-point shot
29:59because it's just a longer rebound.
30:01But teams still do it, and you've just got to be disciplined.
30:04I know Sonja Robbins mentioned she has emphasized it over and over again,
30:07finding bodies, showing it in film, boxing out.
30:13Here's Melonga, spinning on Exler.
30:15Left-handed shot, no, she'll go to the free-throw line.
30:19Want to score with the clock stop.
30:22We talked earlier about the clutch games,
30:24and Alex Sarama's team has been absolutely excellent in these situations.
30:29You see Dom going over the top there.
30:31They're going to review this call.
30:34Might as well, right?
30:35Might as well, and they did this in the last time we were in Portland.
30:38They reviewed a foul on Dom inside the paint,
30:41and Alex Sarama won the challenge.
30:43So no call, no foul, and I believe it turned into a jump ball situation.
30:48But you wipe off potential free-throws for Dom.
30:51Two consecutive games in a row against Portland.
30:54And it is a smart review.
30:59Dom's clearing out a little bit.
31:01I don't see a lot.
31:04Oh, there's not much body, and Dom is sort of fading.
31:08But there's not contact on the arm, on the shooting arm.
31:13Well, Barker, what about Barker's body moving into her?
31:17She does jump and lean a little bit.
31:19Yes.
31:19So there is some body there.
31:21I can see.
31:21There's nothing up top.
31:23No.
31:24But maybe down.
31:25Watch Barker's lower body.
31:26Is she extending out and jumping in?
31:29But Dom is also falling around.
31:31Correct.
31:31So there's not a whole lot of contact right there.
31:34But typically, Barker jumping into the offensive player
31:37is going to be illegal guarding position.
31:40I just don't know because Dom is sort of fading away,
31:43or balance is kind of going away from the rim.
31:46Well, it's a huge call.
31:48It is.
31:48I mean, because this is the difference.
31:49If Dom makes the free-throws,
31:50it's the difference between a two-possession
31:52and a three-possession game.
31:54If you're down two possessions with a minute left,
31:57you're right in it.
31:58You're down three possessions without the ball,
32:00you're in trouble.
32:02Yeah.
32:03And if Dom were to get to the line,
32:04make two free-throws feeling even more confident,
32:07and you've got Natesha who has just hit a three,
32:12that makes a world of difference.
32:13Let's see here.
32:15We have an unsuccessful challenge for Alex Saran.
32:19So good news for Seattle.
32:33The ward off of being explained here,
32:36good job by Kevin Paye explaining this.
32:38He said the ward off by Dom's arm
32:41was deemed to be marginal.
32:43It did not push off Sarah Ashley Barker.
32:46So therefore, no foul on Dom,
32:48and then the contact by Sarah Ashley Barker
32:52was deemed to have moved Dom off her spot a little bit.
32:55And the jump that we were talking about,
32:58jump into Dom's shooting area,
33:00was enough to constitute a foul.
33:03But now you make a free throw.
33:04Sure do.
33:05This is all mute.
33:07If you miss these.
33:11And you really need to make a bolt.
33:13Because the difference between six and seven at this point,
33:16the game is huge.
33:18Although the Storm have had a tough time shooting threes.
33:21They have both teams.
33:22It hasn't been easy for either team beyond the arc.
33:26This is the second loose ball.
33:29Engsler saves it to Flaugé.
33:30This could be best case scenario.
33:33Dom, take that.
33:35She will.
33:36No good.
33:36Tipped around.
33:38And Flaugé is going to race after.
33:40It'll be Seattle ball.
33:41So the Storm get a break.
33:43They're still down three possessions,
33:45but they have the basketball.
33:46We're going probably defense offense.
33:49And Jordan Horsten.
33:53So Heidemann to inbound.
33:5545 left.
34:00Don't have to have a three here,
34:01but you'll take a good one.
34:03Like that!
34:03Yes, you will!
34:06Ooh, a collision underneath.
34:09Karla Leitz and I believe Flaugé down hard.
34:14I did not see what happened there.
34:19We've got the play under review
34:21for a potential hostile act.
34:23I have no idea who the hostile act is against.
34:27But that was a huge collision.
34:31But Seattle's only down four.
34:35And we'll get a look here.
34:37So we'll take a look at the three first,
34:39and then we'll look at the collision.
34:41Great to see Dom knock one down.
34:44She was 0 for 3.
34:45Now look at the middle here.
34:49Oh, it was.
34:50Karla was pushed.
34:51Karla Leitz was pushed into kind of the ground a little bit,
34:54but she also lost balance.
34:55And that collided.
34:57Her face sort of collided
34:58with Flaugé's lower leg, shin area.
35:02So I do think Karla Leitz was...
35:04It was just a...
35:05Let's take another look here.
35:08So it's Zaya and Leitz.
35:10Are they going to look at on Zaya?
35:12Yes.
35:13That's what we're looking for.
35:14For pushing Karla Leitz into...
35:18The arm extends.
35:20Does she...
35:21No.
35:22Well, we've seen Karla Leitz sell fouls.
35:26Yes, we have.
35:26Pretty often.
35:27And that one, unfortunately,
35:28I really hope that Karla Leitz does not hurt there.
35:30And, of course, Flaugé really looked like she was in pain.
35:33But we saw Karla Leitz sell a foul late when Jade Melvin was upgraded
35:39to, I believe, a flagrant one at Portland late in the game
35:42that really changed the tide of that one as well.
35:45I mean, these are very similar, similar games.
35:49So Dom Malonga's got the last six Seattle points.
35:53They needed to go to her, and they did.
35:55And she has come through here in the fourth quarter.
35:57All of a sudden, Dom's got 17 points.
36:00And the fact that she took that three after missing the other one, right?
36:03I mean, she saw the open three, wasn't afraid to shoot it.
36:06You want your superstar taking the shots.
36:08I mean, yes, she's 6'6", but she has really expanded that three-point game
36:11to not let that first miss deter you.
36:14You take the second one because, again, you're open.
36:23This will be a big call here by the officiating crew,
36:28Kevin Fade, Gina Cross, and Ashley Gloss.
36:34Let's take a look one more time.
36:37Look at top of the screen.
36:40That's a great angle.
36:42There's an arm bar, but I think you're right about late selling.
36:47I think Zia's just fighting to go get an overboard and kind of clearing her way.
36:50I mean.
36:51Zia's strong, but I don't think she is throwing Carla late six feet onto the floor.
36:56And I'm wondering, will the refs think that way?
36:59I mean, is it enough of a push?
37:00Because she does push her a little bit, but it's fighting to go get an offensive rebound.
37:05I mean, that was some good WWE action right there.
37:08I mean, that was off the turnbuckle.
37:12Yeah, and good to see Carla late is clearly all right.
37:14Absolutely.
37:16But I think she did a good job of getting in front of Zia because she knew she'd go attack
37:20that O'Glass.
37:22I just don't think that should be upgraded on Zia Cook.
37:27It's a really long review here.
37:30They're taking a lot of different angles.
37:33And you need to because it is a huge call in the game.
37:38I mean, Portland could be getting free throws here and the ball, or they could just have the ball.
37:44And that's a massive difference.
37:47It's hard for Zia.
37:49She's in the path of her trying to go, and you've got to be able to move within your space
37:54to go make a basketball play.
37:57Well, this house is going to erupt if Zia gets called for a flagrant foul.
38:03Alex Sarama's coming over now to midcourt to kind of see what's going on.
38:10Sarama always has a very just low-key look on his face.
38:14Like, he's always just very calm, cool, and collected.
38:16Here we go.
38:20So it'll be a common foul against Zia Cook.
38:23I like that.
38:24But it's a common foul.
38:26So late will have free throws, but it won't be free throws and the basketball.
38:31So Seattle will get the ball after the late free throws, and they will still only be two possessions down.
38:40And you're going to have to foul Portland anyway.
38:44Maybe.
38:45You just don't want to say Carla late.
38:47That's true.
38:48That's true.
38:49With 30 seconds on the clock.
38:50So that is a great point to make.
38:52And late has kind of been automatic from the free throw line.
38:55She has.
38:55But to your point, it's still a two-possession game that would put them up six.
38:59Because this is far better for Seattle than if Portland runs 15 seconds off the clock and then gets fired.
39:06Yes.
39:07You want as much time as you possibly can get right here.
39:11Late knocks it down.
39:14Nine for nine.
39:16That would be perfect.
39:17That would be perfect if she has not missed a free throw.
39:21Can you tell from the ground you're doing?
39:24It's too good.
39:25Ten for ten.
39:26Eight team points for Carla late.
39:27She's had a phenomenal game.
39:29Coming off a career-high 32 in her last game.
39:33We've got a reset timeout to move the ball up to midcourt.
39:40So late's got 50 in her last two games.
39:47But still, two-possession game.
39:51I don't know.
39:53Inside.
39:54Dom's got great position.
39:55Fade away.
39:56Can't get it to go.
39:58And Portland comes up with the rebound.
40:00In a bit of trouble and a foul.
40:03Or was there?
40:04I thought there was a whistle.
40:05I thought there was a whistle.
40:06That was an interversive group whistle that helps out Seattle.
40:10Because Heideman has got the steal.
40:12Lob it up top and there will be Seattle basketball underneath.
40:15I could have swore I heard a whistle and three or four players heard a whistle
40:18because they stopped playing.
40:20Agreed.
40:21I heard another whistle before that pass was even made.
40:26So this game was essentially over before that.
40:30And now Seattle's got a shot.
40:32Bob for one-possession game.
40:35No.
40:36Rebound by Portland.
40:37And there's the foul.
40:38Oh, man.
40:40Great look for Awafam.
40:42Who has been red hot from three.
40:44But not tonight.
40:46Awafam coming in.
40:4820 of 33 from three in her last seven games.
40:52That is number one in the league.
40:57Couldn't get that one to go.
40:59And Faham is two of eight from three tonight.
41:02And kudos to Sonia Raman and her staff for getting her wide open right there.
41:08That's a good play.
41:09It really was.
41:10You want Awafam taking a shot right there.
41:12Initially they go for two with Dom inside because you have the time.
41:16Before the weird was a foul, wasn't a foul.
41:22So now it's going to be too little too late from here.
41:27Three ball from Dom.
41:29His goal.
41:30It's a five-point.
41:31It's still a two-possession game with 11 seconds left for the reset timeout for Portland.
41:37They will bring it up to midcourt.
41:40Seattle now has gotten to 70, which they failed to do against Phoenix.
41:45Their offense really has gone south since those three games where they put up 315 points.
41:5167 points on Thursday and now 70 here in this one.
41:56Far under their season average.
41:58Especially for at home.
41:59They average 85 points a game here in Seattle.
42:03Carl will run it out.
42:05And Horstin fouls her with 6.7 left.
42:08And Alex Harama claps his hands and knows he's got another victory against the Seattle Storm.
42:15Hey, fans, when the Storm score, you score two.
42:17Head to the online team shop or the team store at Seattle Center Armory and get 20% off all
42:23hoodies.
42:23Because Dom Malanga scored 20 points or more in tonight's game.
42:27Don't wait.
42:28This offer only lasts for the next 24 hours.
42:31So that three did mean something.
42:3220% off all hoodies.
42:34It's done.
42:35And the only is Dom got to 20 points.
42:37A woman of the fans.
42:38That's right.
42:39But the Fire have done a phenomenal job post-defense-wise.
42:43Limiting Dominique Malanga and Awafam to a combined 10 of 31.
42:48That's just not something many teams have been able to do.
42:50And coming off a tough game against the Phoenix Mercury, our producer Scott Malone called it out.
42:54What are you going to see after another game where you lost on the road in Phoenix by 20 or
42:59more?
42:59We saw them last time come home and play a phenomenal game against Dallas, right?
43:04Go to overtime and really ignite your offense, get you a win against the New York Liberty in the next
43:10game.
43:10And then the Atlanta Dream.
43:12Well, you lose on the road again at Phoenix by 20.
43:15You come home.
43:16You have an entertaining game.
43:17But I know this is not going to satisfy the Seattle Storm.
43:20And look what they have upcoming.
43:21At L.A., at Atlanta, at Washington.
43:24After that, at Chicago, at Indiana.
43:26So this is the meatiest stretch of the season for a team that has struggled away from home.
43:35Another Western Conference team coming up, followed by four Eastern Conference teams in a row.
43:40They have been far, far better against the East.
43:43Seattle is a 500 team against the East, still looking for their first win of the year against the Western
43:48Conference.
43:48I don't know.
43:49I mean, is that a matchup thing?
43:50Yes, the West is stronger than the East, but I wouldn't say the West is massively stronger than the East.
43:56No, it's, I mean, they played a bunch of close games against the West.
44:00I mean, you look at the Aces game.
44:01They made that one close in the fourth quarter in Las Vegas.
44:05The Sparks, that came down to the wire.
44:06They had the lead here at Climate Pledge Arena.
44:10The West is certainly tough, but formidable, competitive opponents for the Storm.
44:16I think the second time around, some of those opponents, like the Sparks, could definitely run away with a win.
44:22Here's Malanga.
44:23She'll go in and lay it up and in.
44:25Yeah, you don't want your first dunk here to be that.
44:28Let's not do that.
44:29We both thought about it.
44:30And that is the end of this one.
44:33Alex Sarama, Sonia Raman, shake hands at midcourt.
44:38As Dom Malanga and the Seattle Storm fall short, she does end up with 22 points.
44:43Had an excellent fourth quarter.
44:45Dom struggled in the first three, but she was carrying this team down the stretch.
44:50But I want to say that it's a game.
