00:01:36Oh, what a day.
00:01:38I love you too, son.
00:01:46A masterclass around Silverstone by the master yesterday.
00:01:50Nine-time winner of the British Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton,
00:01:53has put it on pole for the sprint,
00:01:55100th between the second-oldest driver on the grid
00:01:58and the second-youngest in the form of Kimi Antonelli,
00:02:01Ferrari, taking the fight to Mercedes.
00:02:05It's a busy Saturday, the first sprint weekend here
00:02:08since the inaugural sprint weekend five years ago,
00:02:11and we are one hour away from getting going on a breezy day.
00:02:19World-class performance by a world-class driver yesterday,
00:02:23Lewis Hamilton, absolutely peerless round here,
00:02:26going for his 10th British Grand Prix victory,
00:02:29and he started the weekend as he means to go on
00:02:32by taking pole position for the sprint.
00:02:34100th ahead of Kimi Antonelli.
00:02:37They embraced afterwards Martin Brunner on every shift.
00:02:40What a day.
00:02:41It was a cracking lap.
00:02:42Lewis wasn't actually fastest in any sector,
00:02:44but he put together what we used to call the ideal time,
00:02:47where he just absolutely nailed all three,
00:02:51three bells up on the fruit machine, if you like,
00:02:54and he got it done.
00:02:56Under pressure, a beautiful lap,
00:02:59and it was pushed just the right amount.
00:03:02He knows how to drive around this circuit, that's for sure.
00:03:04So it was just peak and classic Lewis Hamilton,
00:03:08as far as I'm concerned.
00:03:09What is it about Lewis Hamilton and Silverstone?
00:03:12Well, he clearly has some serious chemistry with the circuit,
00:03:14and I kind of wonder why,
00:03:15but there's people standing around us.
00:03:17We're in front of his garage,
00:03:18and you can tell that there's so much support for him here,
00:03:20and I do think that that is one of the elements,
00:03:22but he knows this track so, so, so well,
00:03:25and he's been the most successful driver around the circuit,
00:03:27and I think that that does play somewhat in his advantage,
00:03:29but I don't think that was the only thing.
00:03:31I think Ferrari clearly have come here this weekend so far
00:03:34and surprised us.
00:03:34It didn't strike us as the circuit where they might be quickest,
00:03:37but they've pulled it out the bag,
00:03:39and, you know, there's a couple of reasons for that,
00:03:41and I hope today in the sprint race
00:03:43he can keep it ahead of the others
00:03:44because it's going to be tricky.
00:03:45It's going to be a whole different set of challenges today
00:03:47than it was yesterday.
00:03:48I think even he was scratching his head.
00:03:50He came into the weekend and he was thinking,
00:03:52okay, like, in Austria, going into turn four,
00:03:5420 kph down on the Mercedes,
00:03:56it was down in terms of pure pace
00:03:59at a lot of the major points around here.
00:04:02So where's it come from for Ferrari?
00:04:04So the engine upgrade, let's call it,
00:04:08power unit that they took to Austria,
00:04:10they didn't fully stress that out,
00:04:11and there's altitude in Austria as well.
00:04:13We're 500 feet above sea level here
00:04:16at Silverstone on the plateau,
00:04:19and I think they've really used the power unit better,
00:04:22and when you put the tracers on top of the other,
00:04:27you can see where the Ferrari's mighty down the back straight
00:04:31and carrying a lot of speed,
00:04:33so somehow they've got some efficiency
00:04:35and top speed here,
00:04:36and I think it paid dividends yesterday,
00:04:38but it was, you know,
00:04:39they're genuinely on Mercedes pace,
00:04:41and they didn't expect to be,
00:04:43we didn't expect them to be,
00:04:45but it's good news for us,
00:04:46and actually the top five are covered by a third of a second,
00:04:50so, you know, as ever, it's really close up for us.
00:04:53It is great news for the championship,
00:04:55as you pointed out, isn't it?
00:04:56It is, and look,
00:04:56Lewis was ahead of George a couple of races ago.
00:04:59He's now just behind him,
00:05:00and trailing him a little bit,
00:05:01but it just keeps things invigorated,
00:05:02and as Martin was saying,
00:05:03they've done a great job with their power unit
00:05:05to, you know, bring it forward a little bit
00:05:06because that was their Achilles heel up until now.
00:05:09However, on the flip side of that,
00:05:10their chassis has been their strong point,
00:05:12and that too has been one of the benefits
00:05:14for them around here
00:05:15because actually they're able to carry
00:05:17quite a lot of speed through the corners
00:05:18where others might not be,
00:05:19and then they have to use less energy
00:05:21to get back up to speed on the straight,
00:05:22so there is a little bit of benefit there as well,
00:05:24as well as the temperatures, you know,
00:05:26it's a lot cooler here,
00:05:27and the other drivers are a lot windier,
00:05:29and the other drivers were complaining
00:05:30about getting their tyres into that optimum window,
00:05:32whereas that hasn't been a problem for Ferrari so far,
00:05:34but in the long runs,
00:05:36that might be a problem for them.
00:05:37Okay, let's have a look in a bit more detail.
00:05:40Let's go to the Skypad.
00:05:43Jensen is there with Anthony.
00:05:45Good morning, Jensen.
00:05:46Morning.
00:05:47Yeah, let's take a look at this lap then.
00:05:49Well, both Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton,
00:05:5311,000 separate them.
00:05:55Let's not forget that when they get to the line,
00:05:56but we've got the virtual cars as well,
00:05:58Jensen, to get stuck into,
00:05:59so we roll it on and look at the graphics on the underside.
00:06:04You can see how that deployment from the Mercedes
00:06:06initially is right there.
00:06:07Yeah, it is,
00:06:08and he's able to carry that all the way through
00:06:10turn one and turn two,
00:06:11and then we're breaking for turn three.
00:06:13And you see the lines at the bottom,
00:06:15but also from the onboards.
00:06:16I'll keep it in this three-way for now
00:06:18because you get to see as you turn into turn four
00:06:21at the loop that Lewis turns it a little bit later
00:06:24than Kimi, actually.
00:06:25Kimi's getting there a bit,
00:06:26and the graphic as well shows that.
00:06:28Let me roll it on slower.
00:06:30A bit of understeer for Lewis kicks in mid-corner.
00:06:33What do you think is going on there with the lines?
00:06:35It looks like he gets a bit push,
00:06:36a bit of push on entry, do you not think?
00:06:37So he's turned in, expecting the front to turn,
00:06:39and he's got a little bit of push there,
00:06:41which has hurt him at the apex.
00:06:42But the one thing that I really pick out with Lewis,
00:06:44though, on these two corners, turn three and four,
00:06:46he looks really aggressive on the throttle pedal,
00:06:49doesn't he?
00:06:49Exactly, yeah.
00:06:50He's always wanting more from the rear of the car on the exits.
00:06:53He doesn't lose too much time there,
00:06:55but then watch on this next straight coming up
00:06:57where a little bit of wind may come into play as well
00:07:01before turn six at Brooklands,
00:07:03but Kimi's catching all the way into that corner.
00:07:05Again, different lines on the exit,
00:07:08and that sets him up differently for Luffield.
00:07:10So look at that.
00:07:11Kimi taking a wider line initially,
00:07:13but then tucks in.
00:07:15Actually, we'll go back to the three-way here
00:07:16because you see it play out a little bit easier.
00:07:18So Kimi's line at this kind of stage there,
00:07:20he's closer to the kerb on the inside,
00:07:22but as we know, what does that do to your exit?
00:07:24Yeah, he's going to struggle with the exit to get the power down.
00:07:26So he's thinking, I want to get the car as straight as I can,
00:07:29and Lewis is like, I don't need to hit that apex,
00:07:31because if I do, I've got to have more steering angle.
00:07:33When I get on the throttle, I get oversteer.
00:07:34And so, yeah, that's really interesting for the exit,
00:07:37but then you see the Ferrari start to pull away a lot here
00:07:40with extra energy available from the bash.
00:07:43So they're deciding, Ferrari, to use it more there
00:07:45than what Mercedes are, surely that's going to come into play later in the lap.
00:07:49It looks like Ferrari thought, right,
00:07:51we want to give it as much deployment as possible
00:07:52until he doesn't have to lift off the throttle, do you know what I mean?
00:07:55So he can stay flat through there just about,
00:07:57and then you carry that speed all the way through down to Maggots and Beckets.
00:08:00And in Beckets, actually, I'll just roll it back a little bit there,
00:08:03because you get to see, I mean, we talk about the Ferrari chassis being the best.
00:08:07Maybe the chassis is, but the aerodynamics is a different thing, as we know.
00:08:10So aero really comes into it in Maggots and Beckets,
00:08:14and at this point, especially at Beckets,
00:08:17look how much Kimi can catch up through that one corner.
00:08:20But he's also turned in a lot earlier, hasn't he?
00:08:23So it's probably hurting his exit a little bit through the last part of Beckets.
00:08:26Let's see, just for clarity, with the two on-board shots here.
00:08:33So, yeah, so let's see where Lewis turns in,
00:08:35how much kerb do they use on the inside?
00:08:39Yes, it's fair.
00:08:40Yeah, Kimi is using a little bit more of that kerb, I have to say,
00:08:43and so that does tie in with the graphics as well,
00:08:46just as a bit of an honesty test there.
00:08:48But you see on the exit, as they exit onto Hangar,
00:08:51Lewis does pull away a little bit,
00:08:53and I don't think that's deployment.
00:08:54I think that's just his line on the exit of Beckets.
00:08:56That initial punch, and like you say, again, getting on power nice and early.
00:08:59But watch this.
00:09:00So the interesting thing, Martin mentioned it before,
00:09:02the data that we saw from the first run in qualifying,
00:09:06I think it was from SQ1,
00:09:09you definitely saw the Ferrari completely was on top of the Mercedes
00:09:12down this part of the straight.
00:09:14But in SQ3, watch the difference.
00:09:17So it just goes to show how the teams are changing their strategy
00:09:20with deployment all the time.
00:09:22Kimi is coming back at him here.
00:09:25Yeah, you can see that.
00:09:26It's always difficult, you know, picking your braking marker into Stowe, isn't it?
00:09:31But especially with a little bit of clipping at the end of the straight,
00:09:34it must be really difficult for them to understand
00:09:36that braking, that turning point into the corner.
00:09:38It really is that extra energy being grabbed by the electrical motor
00:09:42at the end of the straight, as we know it, super clipping.
00:09:45And yeah, then you're into this.
00:09:47It's almost neck and neck between the two of them here.
00:09:49And it's in this final couple of corners where Lewis, I feel, makes the difference.
00:09:53And the Ferrari's been strong there anyway.
00:09:55This is where chassis comes into it.
00:09:56This is where driver comes into it.
00:09:58And he's really fighting the rear there.
00:10:00Once again, desperate to get on power.
00:10:02But you can see he's making the difference.
00:10:04Yeah, and Lewis has been sublime here all weekend from the first lap in practice yesterday.
00:10:10Super quick there and was taking sort of two tenths out of anyone.
00:10:13As you said, really aggressive on throttle there.
00:10:15He's like, I've got one corner to go.
00:10:17Bang, throttle goes down and pole position.
00:10:19It really was.
00:10:20Another special lap from Lewis Hamilton around the Silverstone Circuit.
00:10:23And we can hear what he said about his lap yesterday.
00:10:27Well, Lewis, many congratulations.
00:10:30You didn't need to look at the timing screen.
00:10:31You could hear the crowd telling you you were on pole.
00:10:33How pleasing was that today?
00:10:36I am so happy.
00:10:38So, so happy.
00:10:39Honestly, because, you know, if you even heard me in the press conference, you're like,
00:10:44oh, the track's not going to be the same.
00:10:47Because that's what we all thought.
00:10:48And the track's still phenomenal.
00:10:51The track still feels great.
00:10:52The engine drop-off is not anywhere near what we anticipated.
00:10:58And then on top of that, you know, we really thought, you know, yesterday they were scaring me.
00:11:02They were like, you're going to be six tenths off in a straight line to these guys.
00:11:06And, you know, in the last race, we were four tenths off in the straight line.
00:11:11But then today, all of a sudden, we're kind of there.
00:11:13And I was like, is this real?
00:11:16Are they going to turn up in quali?
00:11:17And we were right there competing with them.
00:11:19So it just goes back to, you know, I always want to bring it back to everyone back at the
00:11:24factory.
00:11:25Because I can't say it enough.
00:11:27They're just, they're pushing.
00:11:29Like last year, we were kind of stuck in the rut.
00:11:32Not a lot we could do.
00:11:33Now they're finding things.
00:11:35They're adding things to the car.
00:11:36And this weekend, every single weekend, we're bringing small little bits and adding performance to this car.
00:11:42And it felt awesome.
00:11:43So some track is the, it's the best track to drive.
00:11:46Is it that the power unit upgrade didn't maybe work so well at altitude and just the conditions here are
00:11:53a bit better?
00:11:54And how confident are you tomorrow you can close out the win and, you know, and fight again for another
00:11:59pull?
00:12:01Well, I think I have to go and look at the long run pace.
00:12:05But the car felt great on the long run, to be honest.
00:12:07So it's going to be going to be tough, obviously.
00:12:12But these guys, they're very, very close.
00:12:14But I don't think it's impossible.
00:12:16And we're in a great position.
00:12:17But obviously, there's a lot of towing that can be done through the first laps, which won't be easy to
00:12:24keep a Mercedes or a Red Bull engine behind.
00:12:27But I'll give it absolutely everything for these fans.
00:12:29How much have you fed off them just finally since you've been here?
00:12:32Every year, I'm just, they just leave you buzzing.
00:12:35You know, I'll go back to my room last night after being on stage.
00:12:38And I'm, like, shaking of just pure adrenaline and love that they, regardless of whoever they're supporting, you know, just
00:12:47to see such a crowd that's just supporting the whole sport.
00:12:49This is the biggest sporting fan group that I think you'll ever see.
00:12:56I always want to go back to Nico Rosberg and say, did he speak too soon with regards to Lewis?
00:13:03Because last year, a completely different driver.
00:13:06And now he's rejuvenated again.
00:13:08I mean, honestly, why would you doubt the seventh time for a champion when he comes back as strong as
00:13:14he has done this season?
00:13:15It's been tough, obviously, since 2021.
00:13:17Lewis hasn't really had the equipment under him that, you know, has given him the confidence he needs or given
00:13:22him the feeling that he needs as a driver and that he can exploit his talents.
00:13:27But it's great to see him back because last year, it was really tough at times to listen to Lewis,
00:13:31you know, really, really down on himself and saying that at times he even said that the team needed to
00:13:36change the driver.
00:13:36And that's not the kind of talk you want to hear from a seven-time world champion, the greatest of
00:13:40all time.
00:13:40And it's great to see him back.
00:13:41And, of course, everybody's going to assume he's out of him.
00:13:44Well, Nico wasn't the only one.
00:13:46I mean, a lot of people are saying, you know, the first thing to go when you're getting a bit
00:13:49older is qualifying pace.
00:13:50But, yeah, he's defying that this year, isn't he?
00:13:53But he lives for it, doesn't he?
00:13:54I mean, he's so dedicated to being a Formula One driver.
00:14:00But what was unusual last year, not only what Lewis was thrashing himself about openly,
00:14:06as he was making mistakes and spinning the car off here and there and just looked completely lost and struggled
00:14:14to integrate, I think.
00:14:16You know, he's been at McLaren, he's been at Mercedes, two UK-based teams all of his life almost,
00:14:21since he was 12 when he first joined McLaren, for example.
00:14:25So, the different culture, to an extent, a different language.
00:14:30And I think he really struggled.
00:14:32He wasn't able to take a big team of people with him, like Bono.
00:14:36When Michael Schumacher went to Ferrari, he had Ross Braun, Rory Byrne, Jean Tartre, and so on and so on.
00:14:44Michael went as part of a package.
00:14:47Lewis went as an individual, largely, I would say, in terms of the performance of the car.
00:14:52But it's just taken him a while, I think, taking him a while to trust them and vice versa.
00:14:58And it's really paying big dividends now.
00:15:01It's a confidence game, we know that.
00:15:03Talking of which, let's flip it to Mercedes.
00:15:06I mean, we saw the embrace between Lewis and Kimi Antonelli.
00:15:10They clearly have that sort of...
00:15:11It's really cool, isn't it?
00:15:13That relationship that the pair of them have.
00:15:15But if you look at two sides of the Mercedes garage right now,
00:15:17one side has it, despite the victory in Austria, you'd say that George, again,
00:15:23I mean, just scratching his head, he can't find an answer, it would seem, at times,
00:15:28for the raw pace of the teenager.
00:15:30We've seen this...
00:15:31It's kind of weird, you're right, that we've seen it,
00:15:34that one teammate sort of has great performance, the other one doesn't.
00:15:37And, you know, even when you think back to Daniel Ricciardo moving to McLaren,
00:15:41and all of a sudden, he just kind of lost it.
00:15:43And that's not what I'm suggesting is going on here with George.
00:15:45But, of course, there are moments, you know, like we saw in Miami,
00:15:48where he was really, really off the pace,
00:15:49and he considered it a bogey track.
00:15:51But I tend to think that maybe this generation of cars,
00:15:54this era of Formula One cars, maybe at the moment still doesn't suit George,
00:15:58and he's not able to extract what he does best out of these cars just yet.
00:16:01Whereas Kimi, who's a driver who, you know, loves to be on the limit,
00:16:04isn't intimidated by any of that, he's able to get more out of it,
00:16:07whereas George needs a little bit more predictability from the car,
00:16:10and he doesn't seem to get that yet at the moment.
00:16:11I completely agree.
00:16:13I think George has just gone from the ground effect era to these new cars.
00:16:17They're a bit more flighty.
00:16:18I don't think he's scared of a car that moves around,
00:16:21but I think in terms of the absolute ultimate pace,
00:16:24he can't quite make it work.
00:16:26I have no doubt he has the talent and the bravery and the experience.
00:16:30But he's keeping himself in contention at the moment
00:16:33through experience and sheer determination.
00:16:37If you're going to win a world championship,
00:16:39you have to be the fastest as well.
00:16:42And right now he's not in that team,
00:16:44and I think he's floundering a little bit as to know how to change that.
00:16:48OK, a quick look at the drivers and constructors.
00:16:51After eight rounds, arriving here at Silverstone,
00:16:54this could change today with Kimi Antonelli.
00:16:56It was 68 the gap between himself and his teammate post-Monaco.
00:17:00It's now down to 40.
00:17:00George, with that win last time out in Austria,
00:17:04has gone ahead of Lewis Hamilton by six points.
00:17:07Then there's a big gap to Oskar Piastri,
00:17:09who's a point ahead of his teammate Lando Norris,
00:17:11who's tied with Charles Leclerc on 79.
00:17:13Max Verstappen was second place at what's almost a home Grand Prix from Austria.
00:17:18Huge support for him.
00:17:19For the Dutchman, it's within six points of them.
00:17:21Then Hatcher, Gasly and Lawson, as far as the Brits are concerned.
00:17:25And Oli Behrman hasn't scored a point since China.
00:17:29He's scored one point since China, I should say.
00:17:31He's in 11th.
00:17:32Arvid Lindblad at four points behind him.
00:17:37In the constructors,
00:17:40Mercedes have a 98-point gap to Ferrari,
00:17:42then 45 to McLaren,
00:17:4344 behind them to Red Bull.
00:17:46Then comes Alpine, 13 ahead of Racing Bulls,
00:17:49talking of Arvid Lindblad.
00:17:51The first British teenager to take part in the British Grand Prix.
00:17:56We're going to hear from him in a couple of moments of time.
00:18:12Welcome back.
00:18:13Coverage of all the support races this weekend on Sky Sports F1.
00:18:17And it is, of course, Independence Day.
00:18:20Well done to American driver Hugo Okachukwu,
00:18:23who has won the sprint race in F3.
00:18:27Talking of which,
00:18:29the man that won the F3 feature race and sprint race back in 2024,
00:18:34is that man?
00:18:35Right in your shot.
00:18:36Right there.
00:18:37Arvid Lindblad.
00:18:38The first British teenager to take part in the British Grand Prix.
00:18:42Amazing helmet as well.
00:18:44We'll have a look at that when we come back.
00:18:45But one of his dreams,
00:18:47some of the pictures that he drew when he was a kid,
00:18:51just getting into his car.
00:18:52And this is how it all began.
00:19:00It's been a while since we've been here.
00:19:01It didn't used to be tarmac.
00:19:03It used to just be gravel.
00:19:04And it was always,
00:19:05then it would rain and it would get really muddy.
00:19:07This was one of the first proper tracks that we went to.
00:19:11We're at a car track, aren't we?
00:19:12I mean, the place where most kids' Formula One dreams are born, so.
00:19:16Guys, thank you for bringing me here,
00:19:18organising this day.
00:19:20You're welcome.
00:19:20It's quite the sight.
00:19:21It's not raining.
00:19:22Well, to be honest,
00:19:23just to be back at a car circuit is always great, isn't it?
00:19:26Yeah.
00:19:26Yeah.
00:19:27Where it all began.
00:19:28Yeah.
00:19:29Let's go.
00:19:31What's it like to be back here?
00:19:33Any memories coming up?
00:19:34Yeah, a lot.
00:19:35I mean, for starters,
00:19:36it looks a lot smaller than I remember.
00:19:38I remember it being quite a lot bigger.
00:19:40Yeah.
00:19:41That's because you were a lot smaller.
00:19:42I was also a lot smaller.
00:19:44So I cannot wait for you to get in the car.
00:19:47What's it like for you, Dad, to be back?
00:19:48This was, you know, pure racing.
00:19:51It was pure racing,
00:19:52and the equipment was very equal,
00:19:55and, you know, he was so...
00:19:58It was so...
00:19:59She's being a mom.
00:20:00She's bringing you your car, isn't she?
00:20:03There you go.
00:20:04Yeah, sort it out.
00:20:06The moms.
00:20:07The moms, hey, we can't let them go under.
00:20:09They have all the glory.
00:20:10Exactly.
00:20:11So, yeah, sorry, Dad.
00:20:12You were telling me...
00:20:13Yeah, I mean, it was pure racing here.
00:20:15Everything was so equal.
00:20:17The fighting was fantastic, you know?
00:20:20Overtaking, being overtaken, you know?
00:20:22Sometimes back to 10th, back to 1st.
00:20:24It was going...
00:20:25So it was great.
00:20:26It was very, you know, Dad and Lad.
00:20:28We had no clue.
00:20:29We were just doing it together,
00:20:30and we were sort of learning,
00:20:31and we had these books.
00:20:32I remember that we used to sometimes go through together,
00:20:35almost talking about apexes and how to, you know,
00:20:37lines and all this kind of stuff.
00:20:39Then at home, I used to download YouTube videos
00:20:41from the track where we were going to,
00:20:43and we were going through every corner.
00:20:44Yeah.
00:20:45And then we would sit and go through every corner together
00:20:47to understand how to take each corner.
00:20:49Yeah.
00:20:49We prepared for the weekend ahead.
00:20:52Special memories.
00:20:54From a very early age, you know,
00:20:55Dad was very focused on getting driver coaches
00:20:58to help me to be better,
00:20:59not getting necessarily the best equipment.
00:21:01100%, okay.
00:21:02You know, that was the secondary thing, you know.
00:21:06It was always...
00:21:06I remember when we used to come when I was seven,
00:21:09and there would be the big dogs, you know, the big guys,
00:21:11you know, because it's an 8 to 13 was the category.
00:21:13So the older boys would come,
00:21:14and, you know, I had to try to keep up with them.
00:21:17And that was sometimes a bit disheartened, you know.
00:21:19I'd get behind them, and they'd just drive away,
00:21:20and it was sometimes a bit disheartening.
00:21:22But that makes you dig deeper, doesn't it?
00:21:24Like, you have to find ways
00:21:26with your potentially compromised cart or setup or whatever
00:21:29to extract more out of yourself as a driver, right?
00:21:32Yeah, but that's what Dad would always say.
00:21:33It was like, well, if you can keep up with them,
00:21:36then when you...
00:21:37When we start properly racing,
00:21:38then they'll give you the good engine,
00:21:39then you'll be able to beat them.
00:21:41It was so clear that he wanted this,
00:21:43that there was a conversation he had with me at seven,
00:21:45and he just told me,
00:21:47Mum, I'm not going to go to university.
00:21:49I'll work hard.
00:21:50He thinks it was later on it was at seven
00:21:52that he told me.
00:21:53So, you know, anyone who touched this boy
00:21:56knew that he had some kind of mission,
00:21:59and it's so hard to stand in the way of that.
00:22:02Believe me, I tried.
00:22:04Someone else we haven't spoken about
00:22:06who's not here with us today is Olly Rowland,
00:22:08who is clearly such a key person in your journey as well.
00:22:11Honestly, it's hard for me to describe
00:22:13my relationship with Olly in one word.
00:22:15You know, he's everything from a mentor to a coach
00:22:20to even at times, honestly,
00:22:21like a second dad.
00:22:25There he is.
00:22:26Hello, mate.
00:22:27Linus, how are you doing?
00:22:29Good, how are you?
00:22:30I'm all right.
00:22:31Nice.
00:22:32Yeah, good.
00:22:33I'm in Wilton Mill.
00:22:35It's been a while since I was last here,
00:22:37so I'm looking forward to getting to go around again.
00:22:41Rolling back the years.
00:22:42How proud are you to see him where he is today?
00:22:44Are you like another proud dad, kind of?
00:22:47Of course.
00:22:47I mean, when I saw him on the grid in Australia
00:22:49and I saw the first lap,
00:22:50it was a hugely proud moment.
00:22:52But I think I knew from even when the first day I met him
00:22:55that he was something a little bit special.
00:22:56And, yeah, thankfully we made it
00:22:58and navigated the obstacles
00:22:59and I'm really, really proud of him.
00:23:14So when you were standing up here,
00:23:16were you just monitoring the times, the sectors?
00:23:19I was just, yeah, I was,
00:23:20more I was looking how he was driving, you know,
00:23:22where was he overtaken, where was he losing,
00:23:24where was he gaining?
00:23:25Then afterwards we could go through and say,
00:23:27okay, we're losing here, why are we losing here?
00:23:29And we're gaining here, why are we gaining here?
00:23:32Just to try to find those sort of
00:23:33small bits of improvements every time.
00:23:35Sort of learning by doing a little bit.
00:23:37Yeah, 100%.
00:23:38It's the only way to do it, right?
00:23:39Yeah.
00:23:39And that's why we always wanted to go testing
00:23:41where the best drivers were
00:23:44because then we could look at them
00:23:45and learn from them all the time.
00:23:47All those long days in the pouring rain.
00:23:52What an experience.
00:24:00Very, very special.
00:24:01Feels like it's 10 years ago again.
00:24:03It hit me a little bit today.
00:24:04It's something I haven't really thought of
00:24:08that much in the past few years.
00:24:12But yeah, it's pretty cool, the journey.
00:24:15And it doesn't feel that long ago.
00:24:18Well, listen, it's been a lovely day.
00:24:20It's been so much fun.
00:24:21Nostalgic for me,
00:24:21but I can't even imagine how nostalgic for you.
00:24:23And also just to see the journey
00:24:24that you guys have been on as a family,
00:24:26as a team,
00:24:27and to be where you are today.
00:24:29I mean, wow.
00:24:30I'm happy we got there in the end.
00:24:31You know, I have played a small part,
00:24:33but, you know, ultimately he's done it himself.
00:24:36And, you know, as a parent, you just,
00:24:38that's what you want, right?
00:24:40You want to give your children opportunities
00:24:42that you didn't have yourself.
00:24:44So, no.
00:24:45It's great.
00:24:52Aw.
00:24:53Very special moments, isn't it?
00:24:55Yeah, it's amazing, isn't it?
00:24:56I mean, we talk about it all the time, don't we?
00:24:58I mean, you know,
00:24:59we'll come on to your relationship with your father
00:25:01and how that worked for you.
00:25:02But essentially, actually,
00:25:03what I picked out from that,
00:25:05Olly Rowland,
00:25:06who never made it onto the F1 grid,
00:25:09but came through the Racing Steps programme
00:25:12in the UK.
00:25:13And as a mentor,
00:25:14he's clearly highly rated
00:25:15and rates half of it,
00:25:18as many do up and down this.
00:25:19And he still has him here with him
00:25:20as many races as he can get him to.
00:25:22But, yeah, I mean,
00:25:23it was interesting to spend the day with him that day.
00:25:25And he was explaining how, actually,
00:25:27when Olly was racing in GP3,
00:25:28which, I mean, is very competitive,
00:25:30or at least it was at the time,
00:25:32he was trying to make extra money.
00:25:34And so that's how he ended up being a coach for Arvid.
00:25:36And he's just kept him on board since then.
00:25:38And he's, like, a very important part of Arvid's team.
00:25:42And he, you know, as you mentioned there,
00:25:44not only just as a coach,
00:25:46but also sometimes as a father figure.
00:25:47And I think it's important for him
00:25:49to have him around for that reason,
00:25:50because you need a solid team around you
00:25:52when you get to this crazy world of F1, don't you?
00:25:54You need someone to lean on in that situation,
00:25:55you know,
00:25:56and Olly has been through it all,
00:25:58pretty much.
00:25:59So, yeah.
00:25:59He was world champion last year, Olly was.
00:26:01He was world champion, yeah.
00:26:01It's very interesting to see, though,
00:26:04the relationship with fathers
00:26:06and how they kind of grow.
00:26:09And then at some point,
00:26:11it's almost like the team say,
00:26:12OK, you've got to just let us take it from here.
00:26:14I know that I'm with George.
00:26:15George, when George Russell came into Formula One,
00:26:19very straightaway,
00:26:20his dad walked away and said no more.
00:26:21Kimi Antonelli's dad is still there
00:26:23and still helping him.
00:26:25How difficult is that?
00:26:28It's kind of tricky
00:26:29because it's so close.
00:26:32For me, I was very lucky.
00:26:33My dad brought me all the way to Formula One
00:26:35and then he took a step back, as you said,
00:26:37and he was in the background.
00:26:38And I think that is really important for a driver,
00:26:40having someone there
00:26:41that if you have an issue,
00:26:42you can go and speak to
00:26:44and share your problem
00:26:45and hopefully they'll have, you know,
00:26:47an arm around your shoulder
00:26:48and help you with it.
00:26:49But I would have really struggled
00:26:51if my dad was on my shoulder the whole time
00:26:53all the way through my, you know, F1 career.
00:26:56So, yeah, there's a balance.
00:26:57But I think the team owners, team principals,
00:27:00they're very good at judging
00:27:01what is too much for the driver.
00:27:02Yeah, and I think it's up to the teams, really,
00:27:04to make that decision
00:27:05because, you know,
00:27:06as much as we talk about these kids
00:27:07having their childhood dreams
00:27:09and making it here,
00:27:09the parents, the family, the siblings
00:27:11are all a huge part of that
00:27:12and they sacrifice so much for them to get here.
00:27:14So it's difficult once you get here to go,
00:27:16okay, I'm here now.
00:27:17Can you back off?
00:27:19As you said, it's too close
00:27:20and it just depends on the character of the father,
00:27:22I think, and sometimes the mother as well.
00:27:24And then the teams can decide
00:27:25who's worth keeping around and who isn't.
00:27:27Actually, Kimi Antonelli's dad,
00:27:28even though he is very close and very hands-on,
00:27:31I think he took a step back a little bit from last year.
00:27:33I think maybe that was also a little bit too much.
00:27:36What a weekend for Arvid Lindblad.
00:27:37First Silverstone weekend.
00:27:39As a Formula One driver,
00:27:41he must be loving it.
00:27:42Right, green light.
00:27:44Go to Saturn.
00:27:46Yes, thank you very much, Simon.
00:27:48Silverstone sprint race on a Saturday.
00:27:50Let's do this.
00:27:51I'm waiting for Sir Lewis Hamilton.
00:27:54Here he comes down.
00:27:55We've already had Charles Leclerc out.
00:27:56We've already had Oscar Piastri
00:27:57and Lando Norris ready to wave
00:28:01here to his fans on the Lando stand.
00:28:04And there we go.
00:28:05Lewis Hamilton ready for this 17-lap race
00:28:08about half an hour.
00:28:09And I think that's significant
00:28:10that Lewis has gone out on the medium tyre
00:28:13because the medium tyre will probably be used.
00:28:16Some people could give the soft a try.
00:28:18There we go.
00:28:19Car number three, Max Verstappen,
00:28:20giving the soft a try.
00:28:22Round two, the grid.
00:28:23But if you use a set of softs now,
00:28:26of course, the FIA won't give you another set.
00:28:27That'll be one less for qualifying.
00:28:30Then Isaac Hadjar going out on the soft tyre once again.
00:28:33So can Lewis Hamilton hang on to this one?
00:28:37The race pace is okay,
00:28:39but the message for the Mercedes
00:28:41is stay calm or stay carmo,
00:28:45as they like to say.
00:28:46Kimi Antonelli saying to George Russell,
00:28:49the Italian for calm is carmo.
00:28:51Not sure about that one.
00:28:52But Antonelli doesn't have to take Lewis Hamilton
00:28:54at the start.
00:28:55He can be a little bit patient,
00:28:57but Russell can't.
00:28:59He needs to progress.
00:29:00From fifth on the grid,
00:29:02he needs to pass Charles Leclerc
00:29:04and Max Verstappen in short order.
00:29:06They are the immediate targets for him.
00:29:08So they're piling out the pit lane here, Crofty.
00:29:11I've even seen the Cadillacs on July the 4th.
00:29:14They're all wearing bandanas round here.
00:29:16It's got very US of A.
00:29:19It certainly has, Ted Kravitz.
00:29:21Happy Independence Day to the Cadillac
00:29:24and the Haas teams,
00:29:25American-owned, of course.
00:29:26250 years on,
00:29:28after declaring independence from Great Britain,
00:29:30they're back racing at the British Grand Prix.
00:29:32Let's hope it's a star-spangled day for them
00:29:35and whoever gets the victory in this sprint race.
00:29:37Lewis Hamilton,
00:29:38Sir Lewis Hamilton,
00:29:39out on track.
00:29:40I'm so happy,
00:29:41he said yesterday.
00:29:43And it's clear,
00:29:44walking around Silverstone today,
00:29:45he's not the only one
00:29:46that's a little bit chuffed
00:29:47about his third sprint pole.
00:29:49Pole for the very first sprint race
00:29:51here at Silverstone 2021.
00:29:54And five years later,
00:29:55he's back in P1 again.
00:29:56In between Shanghai,
00:29:58his other pole,
00:29:59where, of course,
00:29:59he won his first victory
00:30:00in the Ferrari car.
00:30:02Kimi Antonelli, by the way,
00:30:03just 11 milliseconds adrift yesterday.
00:30:05And he's now made it
00:30:07four sprint races this season
00:30:08and four times,
00:30:09starting from second on the grid.
00:30:11Max Verstappen will be third on the grid
00:30:13alongside Charles Leclerc.
00:30:14You have to go back to the third row
00:30:16to find a sprint winner in 2026.
00:30:19Two for George Russell,
00:30:20one for Lando Norris.
00:30:21They start alongside each other.
00:30:22Lando, by the way,
00:30:2381 milliseconds away
00:30:25from a SQ2 knockout.
00:30:28Pierre Gasly,
00:30:28for the second weekend in a row,
00:30:30missing out by the merest of margins.
00:30:32He starts 11th.
00:30:33This is George Russell's practice start.
00:30:40Holding the revs for a very long time.
00:30:42That didn't seem too bad.
00:30:44Not much wheel spin there
00:30:45from George Russell.
00:30:46He'll be starting, as I say,
00:30:47from the third row on the grid.
00:30:49Alex Albon will start from the pit lane.
00:30:51They've changed the setup.
00:30:52On is Williams car.
00:30:53He qualified 16th.
00:30:55Starts from the pit lane
00:30:55for 17 laps to come.
00:30:57Here in the sprint,
00:30:58Simon Lazenby.
00:30:59Thank you very much, David Croft.
00:31:02Yeah, yeah.
00:31:02Quick one on George.
00:31:04Again, we could touch on it,
00:31:06but what do you feel?
00:31:07What do you feel is going on
00:31:08in George's mind this weekend?
00:31:11It's tough.
00:31:12It's tough when your team-mate
00:31:14has put it on the front row
00:31:15for the sprint race
00:31:16and you're, you know,
00:31:17a few places back in fifth.
00:31:20I don't know with George.
00:31:22You know, I really rate George.
00:31:23He's unbelievably quick
00:31:24and we've seen it
00:31:25over the last few years
00:31:25against Lewis Hamilton,
00:31:26who's on pole position,
00:31:29was outperforming Lewis.
00:31:30And at the moment in this car,
00:31:32he's struggling
00:31:32and I don't think
00:31:33it's suiting his style.
00:31:34Wherever we go on the calendar,
00:31:36he doesn't seem to quite
00:31:37have that pace of Kimi.
00:31:38It's such a small margin,
00:31:39but it's there.
00:31:40This is Mr. Saturday
00:31:41we're talking about.
00:31:42You know, this is the qualifying king
00:31:44from the past
00:31:45and all of a sudden
00:31:46it's been upended by his team.
00:31:48Although, having said that,
00:31:49he's 4-4,
00:31:50so I've contradicted myself directly there.
00:31:52But the thing with George,
00:31:55it has been traditionally
00:31:56one of his strongest points.
00:31:58It has been.
00:31:59You know,
00:32:00it clearly isn't the season,
00:32:01but I think one of the difficult
00:32:03things for him as well
00:32:03is he's just come off the back
00:32:04of a victory in Austria
00:32:05that he was relying on.
00:32:07I mean, he needed to switch
00:32:08the momentum
00:32:08and unfortunately,
00:32:09it doesn't look so far
00:32:11because let's not say
00:32:12that this weekend's over.
00:32:13It's not over at all.
00:32:14Still got another qualifying
00:32:15ahead of us later today
00:32:16and Grand Prix tomorrow.
00:32:17But, you know,
00:32:18you need to carry that momentum
00:32:19a little bit longer
00:32:20than just one race
00:32:21to be able to shake off
00:32:21the pressure that you've got
00:32:22from the man
00:32:23that you're having lunch with,
00:32:24seeing across the engineering table.
00:32:26It's relentless
00:32:27when you're going up
00:32:28against your teammate like that
00:32:29and you need a little bit
00:32:30of positive momentum
00:32:31to last a little longer.
00:32:32Yeah, he hasn't forgotten
00:32:33how to qualify.
00:32:34He's just driving a car
00:32:35at the moment
00:32:35that isn't suiting his style.
00:32:37So once he finds a way
00:32:38around that,
00:32:38which needs to be quickly,
00:32:40the championship goes by very quick.
00:32:43I think he'll be there,
00:32:44but it's just how long that takes.
00:32:46Does need to be quick,
00:32:47doesn't it?
00:32:47He has closed the gap
00:32:49to within 28 points
00:32:50from where it was.
00:32:52It was 68 points.
00:32:52He's now 40 between himself
00:32:54and his teammate,
00:32:55Kimi Antonelli,
00:32:55but starts three places
00:32:57behind him.
00:32:5822 minutes to go
00:32:59until the sprint gets underway.
00:33:01We'll be more
00:33:02live from the grid
00:33:03with myself and Jenson
00:33:04in a couple of months' time.
00:33:14Welcome along, everybody,
00:33:15on this Speed Saturday.
00:33:17It's a new format.
00:33:18We've got to go for it.
00:33:20Max and Packer T
00:33:21have a race in the boat.
00:33:23Perez is round.
00:33:24Perez is spinning.
00:33:25That's great in the world.
00:33:27Verstappen sprints home
00:33:28to take the sprint
00:33:29on this Saturday.
00:33:30Good.
00:33:31Good job.
00:33:32Pierre Gasly's front wing
00:33:34comes off
00:33:34and he crashes
00:33:35at the Curva Grande.
00:33:38Great action
00:33:38all the way
00:33:39through the field.
00:33:42Verstappen goes
00:33:43around the outside
00:33:44into the chicane.
00:33:45This is epic.
00:33:48I've got on the inside
00:33:49of his teammate.
00:33:50Big speed.
00:33:51They are wheel to wheel.
00:33:53Russell is now ahead.
00:33:55That's how we roll, baby.
00:33:58He's done me.
00:33:59He fought it.
00:34:00He only could even
00:34:01live in the States.
00:34:05It's first win
00:34:06in Formula One
00:34:07for Oscar Piastri.
00:34:09Max Verstappen,
00:34:11a three-time champion
00:34:13of the world.
00:34:14Absolutely unbelievable.
00:34:16That was a great land
00:34:18from Murray.
00:34:21Oscar Piastri is out.
00:34:23In scarlet red,
00:34:25Lewis Hamilton
00:34:26wins for Ferrari
00:34:27for the first time.
00:34:30Antonelli goes off
00:34:31the track.
00:34:33Off again, Antonelli.
00:34:35We need the race right there.
00:34:36Good to know.
00:34:37Kimi, we talk about this
00:34:38internally
00:34:39and not on the radio, okay?
00:34:41The track that hosted
00:34:43the very first sprint race
00:34:44is now playing host
00:34:45to the 28th sprint.
00:34:48Lewis Hamilton's on pole
00:34:49for the Saturday sprint.
00:34:51What a performance.
00:34:58Five years of sprint racing
00:35:00and this is where it all began
00:35:02just over a quarter of an hour
00:35:04to go until the start of that.
00:35:06We're down on the cricket
00:35:07independence.
00:35:08Very nice.
00:35:12Happy 4th of July.
00:35:15Oh, I thought they were
00:35:16for Sky Sports.
00:35:18Very good.
00:35:18Similar color scheme.
00:35:20Well done.
00:35:20Nice to see you on brand.
00:35:21Tell us about this then today.
00:35:24Obviously, starting down
00:35:25in 19th and 20th.
00:35:26Yeah.
00:35:27Actually, there were
00:35:28a couple of positive signs
00:35:29despite what went on
00:35:31in Austria
00:35:31and on track overtake
00:35:32for Sergio
00:35:33on Alex.
00:35:34Where are you at
00:35:36at the moment,
00:35:36do you think?
00:35:37Well, you know,
00:35:38we're still very, very early days
00:35:40for the team.
00:35:41I think in Melbourne
00:35:42we were kind of,
00:35:43you know,
00:35:43over 2% off the pace.
00:35:45Now we're pushing Haas
00:35:47and all these teams have been,
00:35:49you know,
00:35:49they have a huge number
00:35:50of Grand Prix's
00:35:51under their belt
00:35:52and it's not easy this game.
00:35:53So I'm really proud
00:35:54of everyone in the team
00:35:55and what they've managed
00:35:56to achieve
00:35:56in a very, very short
00:35:57space of time.
00:35:58But obviously,
00:35:59we've got to keep pushing.
00:36:00Yeah, there's no hiding
00:36:01for the car
00:36:02around a track
00:36:02like Silverstone,
00:36:04is there?
00:36:04How are the drivers feeling
00:36:05and what's their feedback
00:36:06on where they think
00:36:08you need to improve?
00:36:09Yeah, well, you know,
00:36:11I think every driver
00:36:13loves Silverstone.
00:36:14It's such a fast circuit,
00:36:15flowing, you know,
00:36:15very fast corners.
00:36:17So, you know,
00:36:18in terms of the car,
00:36:20it's, you know,
00:36:21we've just got to keep
00:36:22trying to improve
00:36:23everywhere,
00:36:24basically, on the car.
00:36:25Everything is so new.
00:36:27This is fundamentally
00:36:27a B-spec car
00:36:29that we brought to Austria.
00:36:31We didn't get much running
00:36:31in Austria.
00:36:32We've had one hour here
00:36:34and so we're still
00:36:36learning.
00:36:36So, you know,
00:36:37we'll learn what we can
00:36:38in the sprint race
00:36:39and try and take it
00:36:40through the Grand Prix
00:36:40tomorrow.
00:36:41Thanks very much,
00:36:42Graham.
00:36:42We'll move forward.
00:36:43Here we are,
00:36:45fifth row of the grid
00:36:45and actually inside
00:36:46the top ten,
00:36:47both of the racing bulls.
00:36:50They've looked good
00:36:50this year,
00:36:51haven't they,
00:36:51both of them?
00:36:52And look,
00:36:52we focused on Arvid,
00:36:53but what about Liam Lawson?
00:36:55He's ahead of him
00:36:55in the championship
00:36:56and he has,
00:36:57he's found a new
00:36:58lease of life,
00:36:59hasn't he?
00:36:59He has.
00:36:59The last couple of races
00:37:00especially,
00:37:01he's got a lot more
00:37:02confidence in himself
00:37:03and in what the car
00:37:04is doing,
00:37:04but yeah,
00:37:05both cars inside
00:37:06the top ten
00:37:07I think is a really
00:37:09good job for sprint
00:37:09qualifying.
00:37:10Let's have a quick
00:37:10word with Alan,
00:37:11the boss,
00:37:11Alan Permain.
00:37:12Yeah,
00:37:13great day yesterday.
00:37:14What's possible?
00:37:17Today,
00:37:17well,
00:37:17we try and do
00:37:18what we can.
00:37:18We try and get
00:37:19some points.
00:37:20It's not easy.
00:37:21These eight cars
00:37:22in front of us
00:37:22are a little bit
00:37:23quicker than us,
00:37:25but we need to be there.
00:37:26We need to put ourselves
00:37:26in that ninth and tenth
00:37:27position,
00:37:28challenge where we can
00:37:28and see what happens
00:37:29at the front.
00:37:30So most of the cars
00:37:31at the front
00:37:32obviously take it
00:37:32a little bit easier,
00:37:33they say,
00:37:34because they're worried
00:37:34about having to fix
00:37:35their car for qualifying,
00:37:37but for you guys
00:37:37it's about getting
00:37:38points right,
00:37:39so you're out there
00:37:40giving it large.
00:37:41I wouldn't quite say
00:37:42out there giving it large.
00:37:43We have to keep that
00:37:44in mind as well.
00:37:45The big prize is tomorrow.
00:37:46So yes,
00:37:47we want to score
00:37:48some points today,
00:37:48but I don't want a car
00:37:49on a wall
00:37:50or cars tangling
00:37:51with each other.
00:37:52We have every chance
00:37:53of putting them both
00:37:54in Q3 this afternoon
00:37:55and then there's
00:37:57bigger points
00:37:57available tomorrow.
00:37:58Did you give them
00:37:58a good talking to
00:37:59after Austria?
00:38:00Of course.
00:38:01Oh yeah.
00:38:02I knew you would have.
00:38:02It wasn't too bad.
00:38:03A little bit.
00:38:04Come on,
00:38:05here's Arvid.
00:38:07Arvid,
00:38:08you've got family here,
00:38:09fans here.
00:38:10You're glad to kind of
00:38:10get the helmet on
00:38:11and get to work?
00:38:12Yeah, definitely.
00:38:13I mean,
00:38:13it's going to be a very,
00:38:14it's been a special
00:38:15weekend so far,
00:38:16you know,
00:38:16my first ever home GP.
00:38:19So yeah,
00:38:19looking forward to the race
00:38:20now,
00:38:20but it's amazing
00:38:21to have the support
00:38:22from my fans,
00:38:23but also from my family
00:38:25here as well.
00:38:26Thank you.
00:38:31Oscar,
00:38:32quick word,
00:38:33what's possible today,
00:38:34Oscar?
00:38:36I don't know.
00:38:37I think it could be
00:38:38a pretty interesting
00:38:39opening for your laps
00:38:40with energy management
00:38:42so we'll see what happens.
00:38:44It's a bit stiff,
00:38:45the car yesterday going around.
00:38:46Were you feeling that
00:38:47within the car?
00:38:48Did it feel stiff
00:38:49from within the car?
00:38:50It certainly wasn't
00:38:51particularly easy yesterday.
00:38:53It was pretty lively
00:38:54for both of us
00:38:55so hopefully we can make
00:38:57it a bit better today
00:38:59and find a bit better
00:39:00than the crump.
00:39:01Top one,
00:39:01appreciate it.
00:39:02Yeah,
00:39:02I mean,
00:39:02that was the thing,
00:39:03you noticed it in commentary,
00:39:04didn't you?
00:39:05It just doesn't look
00:39:06particularly compliant,
00:39:07that McLaren.
00:39:08Yeah,
00:39:08they did seem like
00:39:09they were struggling
00:39:09a little bit with that,
00:39:10but today is a different
00:39:11thing altogether.
00:39:12It's so windy today.
00:39:14I think they're really
00:39:14all going to be struggling
00:39:15to try and find out
00:39:16where the limit is
00:39:17of the car.
00:39:18Very gusty,
00:39:19we obviously know
00:39:20this is an airfield
00:39:20so it's a lot of side
00:39:23impact really
00:39:24on certain parts
00:39:25of the track
00:39:25especially when you've
00:39:25got to change direction.
00:39:26It's tough through Beckett's
00:39:28when the wind is changing
00:39:28every time you turn
00:39:29the steering wheel.
00:39:30I'm just going to sneak
00:39:31up on Adrian here
00:39:32because I've noticed
00:39:33he's got his notepad out.
00:39:35Adrian,
00:39:35how are you?
00:39:36Yeah,
00:39:36good, thanks.
00:39:37I'm having a little look
00:39:38at what Mercedes
00:39:39are doing well.
00:39:41What have you seen
00:39:42at the back of that Mercedes
00:39:43that you like the look of?
00:39:45Sorry,
00:39:45sorry again.
00:39:45What have you seen
00:39:46at the back of that Mercedes
00:39:47you like the look of?
00:39:49There's lots of carbon.
00:39:50No,
00:39:50I mean it's always interesting
00:39:52to look at other people's
00:39:53solutions and shapes
00:39:54and so forth
00:39:56and yes of course
00:39:57we all look at pictures
00:39:58but I find walking around
00:40:00and being able to
00:40:01kind of see it in 3D
00:40:02is helpful as well.
00:40:04Adrian,
00:40:05it's lovely to see you at race.
00:40:06You've obviously been busy
00:40:07working away at the factory.
00:40:09Where are you
00:40:09in terms of upgrades
00:40:11for the package
00:40:12that's coming
00:40:12a little bit later
00:40:13in the year?
00:40:14We took the decision
00:40:15after Melbourne
00:40:16that there's no point
00:40:18in introducing
00:40:19small changes
00:40:20that wouldn't put us
00:40:22and still leave us
00:40:23with no real chance
00:40:25of scoring points
00:40:26so we'd take a bit
00:40:28of pressure off ourselves
00:40:29regroup
00:40:31put systems in place
00:40:32for the future
00:40:33and work on a proper upgrade
00:40:36which we're hoping
00:40:38to have for Hungary.
00:40:39As the first stage
00:40:40there'll be a bit more
00:40:41to have coming
00:40:42in Zandvoort
00:40:43combined with Honda
00:40:45introducing an upgrade
00:40:47under the Puak
00:40:48which will be for Zandvoort
00:40:50so at that point
00:40:52I'm hoping we'll be
00:40:53at least in this
00:40:54point scoring position.
00:40:55Really?
00:40:56Good field do you think
00:40:57after that?
00:40:57I mean I'm not saying
00:40:58we'll top ten
00:40:59but if we can at least
00:41:00get properly into Q2
00:41:02and then we can see
00:41:03from there.
00:41:03Nice to see you.
00:41:04Thanks Adrian.
00:41:05Appreciate it.
00:41:05So it is great
00:41:06to see Adrian back.
00:41:08I'm just wondering
00:41:09if we can butt in
00:41:10and have a quick word
00:41:11with Zach.
00:41:12Just having a word
00:41:13with Austrian TV.
00:41:16Lando.
00:41:19Lando just there.
00:41:20Let's see if we can
00:41:21have a quick word
00:41:22we will.
00:41:23Come on in.
00:41:25Lando quick word.
00:41:26We'll just talk to Oscar.
00:41:26No?
00:41:27Not today?
00:41:28What's possible?
00:41:29Sorry?
00:41:30What's possible today?
00:41:31What's possible?
00:41:33Maybe a few positions.
00:41:34Not a lot.
00:41:35I think it's clear
00:41:35the guys ahead
00:41:36are a bit quicker
00:41:36but it's our home race
00:41:39so we have to
00:41:39kind of go forward
00:41:40don't we?
00:41:40Got to please
00:41:41that standard for you.
00:41:42Thank you.
00:41:42I will.
00:41:42I'll do my best.
00:41:43Yeah ma'am.
00:41:44Yeah there we go.
00:41:45I mean good of him
00:41:45to talk to us.
00:41:46Good of both of them
00:41:47to talk to us.
00:41:48Actually let's have
00:41:49a quick look at
00:41:50Charles Ecclare.
00:41:51I'm quite perplexed
00:41:52as to what's going on
00:41:53with Charles.
00:41:54He's talking about
00:41:54his brakes.
00:41:55He's talking about
00:41:56four points
00:41:57in the last three races.
00:41:59It's just you know
00:42:00we look at one side
00:42:01of the Mercedes garage
00:42:01then you look at
00:42:02this side
00:42:03it's again
00:42:04it's flipped around
00:42:05from last year Jensen.
00:42:06It has
00:42:07and he's been struggling
00:42:07with his brakes
00:42:08and after Monaco
00:42:09he actually completely
00:42:10changed the brake material
00:42:11I think so
00:42:12but still didn't really
00:42:13help him in Austria
00:42:14so he'll be hoping
00:42:15for a race today
00:42:16where he can see
00:42:17his teammate
00:42:17and hopefully
00:42:18challenge at the front.
00:42:20Max, what a great
00:42:22pullback from him
00:42:23yesterday
00:42:23because he was about
00:42:24second off wasn't he
00:42:25in practice
00:42:26and then to get
00:42:26within three tenths
00:42:28once again
00:42:29we talk about
00:42:30outperforming a car
00:42:31but he does it so often.
00:42:32Yeah he does
00:42:33but you can't do that
00:42:34for 17, 18 laps
00:42:35do you know what I mean?
00:42:36He's able to do it
00:42:37in qualifying
00:42:38and wring its neck
00:42:39but the race
00:42:40I think is going to be
00:42:40a bit trickier for him.
00:42:42Okay.
00:42:42Let's just see if we can
00:42:43grab a word with
00:42:44Fred Vasseur
00:42:45Fred
00:42:47how's it looking for you
00:42:48as a brilliant performance
00:42:49yesterday by Louis
00:42:52you just thought
00:42:53you're on the radio
00:42:53okay
00:42:54I'm leaving too
00:42:55he's keeping an eye
00:42:56on his main man
00:42:58I'll be very
00:42:58talk to you gentle
00:42:59but there he is
00:43:00just getting ready
00:43:01love that
00:43:01I love Louis' helmet
00:43:03I think it's one of the
00:43:04best I've seen
00:43:05it's just
00:43:07well this was his helmet
00:43:09from when he started
00:43:09in planting
00:43:10so I've seen this helmet
00:43:11many times
00:43:12the back of it
00:43:13now we weren't
00:43:15racing together
00:43:15I'm a bit older than him
00:43:16but my dad used to
00:43:17tune his engines
00:43:18in go-karts
00:43:19so yeah
00:43:20it's a great helmet
00:43:21and it's lovely
00:43:22to have that back
00:43:22for the British Grand Prix
00:43:23and he's going to put it
00:43:24on pole for the sprint
00:43:25yeah I mean
00:43:26he's thinking
00:43:27I mean he's confident
00:43:28about the long run pace
00:43:29as well
00:43:29which actually
00:43:30we were concerned about
00:43:31Fred actually pointed out
00:43:33in the team principals
00:43:33presser yesterday
00:43:34yeah that was an issue
00:43:35in Austria
00:43:35it really was
00:43:36but it was super hot
00:43:37this is a very different
00:43:38type of track
00:43:39it's cooler
00:43:40but also the deg
00:43:41is a lot lower
00:43:42here at Silverstone
00:43:43the thing they're going to
00:43:44all have to get used to
00:43:44as I said before
00:43:45is the wind out there
00:43:46and how these cars
00:43:47are working into those
00:43:48windy conditions
00:43:49yeah I was just going to say
00:43:50if you get one
00:43:51on the wrong corner
00:43:52it can really affect you
00:43:53around here
00:43:54it's less gusty
00:43:55than it was perhaps
00:43:55an hour ago
00:43:56but it's still there
00:43:57it's still noticeable
00:43:58it is I mean
00:43:59the qualifying is always
00:44:00more difficult
00:44:01when it's windy
00:44:01because you're putting it
00:44:02on the line
00:44:02here hopefully
00:44:03he's got a bit of space
00:44:04we know how good
00:44:05the Ferrari is off the line
00:44:06so he's looking at that
00:44:07turn one thinking
00:44:08that's mine I'm sure
00:44:09are you fancying
00:44:09that he can keep the
00:44:10well the Mercedes
00:44:11behind of Kimi
00:44:12today I think he can hold it
00:44:13I really do
00:44:14there we go
00:44:14and most of the
00:44:15British faith will be
00:44:16hoping that he can do so
00:44:17as well
00:44:18he's the most successful
00:44:19driver around here
00:44:21at Silverstone
00:44:22with nine wins
00:44:23in the Grand Prix itself
00:44:24and it's a great start
00:44:25I wonder if you can
00:44:26back it up with
00:44:27sprint victory
00:44:27we'll find out
00:44:28next
00:44:38welcome back
00:44:39beautiful day here
00:44:40at Silverstone

00:58:18на боку Руссель.
00:58:19Сейчас, Мерседес, не имеют его в своем пути.
00:58:22На этих первых этапах.
00:58:23Мы на борт с Charles Leclerc,
Charles Leclerc,
00:59:30Behind Colopinto, Leclerc goes up in the sixth place.
00:59:33Aggressive racing, but they know they cannot afford to smash their cars to pieces.
00:59:38Otherwise, they'll miss qualifying a little bit later on today.
00:59:41So it's super aggressive, but there's a point where they have to get out of it.
00:59:46We've got a little gap in the action for a moment.
00:59:49Anthony Davidson at race control.
00:59:50Martin said about Fernando Alonso.
00:59:52Can you confirm that?
00:59:53Yeah, absolutely, Crofty.
00:59:54On the first lap, he got tapped by Perez mid-corner.
00:59:57That sent him spinning.
00:59:58That's what the yellow flag is all about.
01:00:00Kimi Antonelli's been told on the radio to improve speed through turn six.
01:00:03That's Brooklands compared to Lewis Hamilton.
01:00:06The team can see that on the data.
01:00:07And George Russell's been on the radio complaining about cops,
01:00:10where he feels a bit vulnerable.
01:00:12Thanks ever so much.
01:00:13And Pierre Gasly's just lost out to Liam Lawson in that battle for the last points place.
01:00:18The eight points at the moment are Lewis Hamilton's.
01:00:21If he can hang on to this lead, that's the gap between himself and Kimi Antonelli.
01:00:25He's now in the overtaking zone.
01:00:26That means you get to harvest more battery power and keep a higher top speed
01:00:32for the entire lap that follows.
01:00:35And if you can stay within that one-second deficit, you just keep getting that recycled.
01:00:40So Antonelli then on the prowl against Lewis Hamilton.
01:00:44Hamilton has led this sprint in Shanghai in 24, 25, and 26.
01:00:49Has never led a sprint lap anywhere else until today.
01:00:53And he's led every single one of the four and a half laps we've had so far.
01:00:57But he's going to come under increasing threat, I think, from Kimi Antonelli.
01:01:00As Lindblad makes a move past Pierre Gasly and up into ninth place.
01:01:05We saw that on the side of our screens.
01:01:08Here's Max Verstappen.
01:01:09We're in fourth place for Max Verstappen.
01:01:11The car ahead is Lando Norris.
01:01:13He started third, got a bad start for whatever reason.
01:01:17And has been making up places ever since.
01:01:20As we go with that crosswind through Maggots and into Beckett's.
01:01:24That Red Bull, they still can't really get it off the line, can they?
01:01:27And interestingly, with the same power unit,
01:01:30the Racing Bulls seem to have a better system with their clutches.
01:01:33Whatever it is, the drivers feel the need to fully have their control.
01:01:40Because Hadjar also felt badly back in the other Red Bull.
01:01:44George Russell complaining that he's losing out through cops each and every single lap.
01:01:49But what are Mercedes saying to Kimi Antonelli about their race strategy?
01:01:52Antonelli's monitoring the team radio.
01:01:54It's not so much race strategy, Crofty.
01:01:56It's more about the deployment strategy.
01:01:57And they're starting to tell Kimi to think about setting up different strategies
01:02:02when it comes to where that electrical energy versus Hamilton comes into play.
01:02:07So let's keep our eyes on this battle.
01:02:09And we saw that in qualifying.
01:02:10There was a big difference in when the energy was deployed.
01:02:14Hadjar losing out here.
01:02:16He was having problems sinking his gears on the formation lap.
01:02:18He's down to 11th.
01:02:19Lewis desperately trying to break the slipstream there down the Wellington straight.
01:02:24And this bodes well for tomorrow, doesn't it?
01:02:26Because there is a class of two up front at the moment for Lewis Hamilton.
01:02:31And the man who took over his seat when he departed the Ferrari at Mercedes, Kimi Antonelli.
01:02:3821 years between them in terms of age and experience, actually.
01:02:43And I get the feeling that these are the two that are loving the way these cars feel in 2026.
01:02:48And that loss of downforce and the way that the backhand often steps out a little bit.
01:02:53They're more lighter, they're more nimble.
01:02:56These are the guys that can deal with it better, I think, than anyone else at the moment.
01:02:59But, yeah, they seem to be able to, managing the power unit, but also carrying the speed.
01:03:05But when you've got a nice clear piece of track like this, they're now five and a half seconds clear
01:03:12of Lando Norris.
01:03:13They can really focus on their line, on their gear shifts, on their braking points.
01:03:20And this won't faze Lewis at all to see the Mercedes in his mirrors.
01:03:25He knows exactly what to do, but he is the hunt head at the moment.
01:03:31But at least he's got clear air to drive into.
01:03:33But these latest 2026 cars can follow so much more closely now.
01:03:38Antonelli, at this phase of the sprint, looking the faster.
01:03:41And certainly on this phase of the lap, looking the faster.
01:03:44Maybe using a bit more boost in the early part of the lap.
01:03:47He's a bit closer to Lewis Hamilton than we've seen on previous laps.
01:03:51Down the Wellington straight we go into Brooklyn.
01:03:53Antonelli pulls out to the left-hand side.
01:03:55Hasn't got enough of a straight line to break late enough to get past Hamilton.
01:04:00But at least he showed him that he was there.
01:04:02Now we're going to run out of Woodcutt, down the old pit straight towards Copse.
01:04:07And this is a corner that you respect, you fear, and you just take as fast as you possibly can
01:04:13as Hamilton leads Antonelli through it.
01:04:15And Hamilton, he'll be in a zone at the moment.
01:04:18At the track that he loves, around the fans that he loves and they love him too.
01:04:22And he will be enjoying every single turn of the wheel as he leads the sprint on lap 7, ahead
01:04:28of Kimi Antonelli.
01:04:30There goes that flippy Macarena wing on the Ferrari, the Active Aero.
01:04:35They've got the Active Aero on the Mercedes as well.
01:04:37It's not an overtaking tool.
01:04:38It just dumps the drag.
01:04:39Into Stowe we go.
01:04:40There's a few car lengths in it.
01:04:42But so far, Ferrari have got an answer to the extra boost from the Mercedes.
01:04:47Yeah, Antonelli looks still there, doesn't he?
01:04:50He's pretty much faster everywhere.
01:04:51The tyres are pretty robust around here.
01:04:54They're hanging on these medium compound tyres in the harder range of what Pirelli have and the season.
01:05:01So I don't think that's an issue.
01:05:02It's just all about deployment.
01:05:04This might be an issue.
01:05:05Here comes Antonelli.
01:05:07Into village we go.
01:05:08And he was a couple of car lengths too far back to mount a robust challenge to Hamilton.
01:05:13But he'll get a great slipstream down the Wellington Strait.
01:05:17Yeah, Lewis was compromised in the defence and that slowed him down onto Wellington Strait.
01:05:23Side by side they go.
01:05:24And he's going to have to go the long way round, Antonelli.
01:05:26And it's too long to get round.
01:05:28Hamilton wasn't able to weave.
01:05:31He did just enough to...
01:05:32And he's going to have to go the long way round.
