00:00How well do you really know your neighbors?
00:02In the quiet town of Mount Stirling, Kentucky,
00:05the Scott family thought they were performing a simple act of kindness
00:08when they opened their home to an old family friend.
00:11They had no idea they were welcoming a real-life nightmare through their front door.
00:16This is the chilling story of Frances Zaya,
00:19a woman whose escalating obsession and deep-seated hatred ultimately turned deadly.
00:24In late 2016, Frances was going through a difficult divorce.
00:28While waiting for renovations to finish on a house she bought nearby,
00:32she asked her longtime friend, Shauna Scott, if she could crash on her couch.
00:37At first, everything was fine.
00:40They went shopping, watched movies, and enjoyed each other's company.
00:44But within weeks, the atmosphere completely shifted.
00:47Frances began exhibiting deeply disturbing behavior.
00:51She aggressively scolded Shauna's young grandson
00:53through tantrums over household cleaning habits
00:56and eventually showed the family openly racist videos.
01:00For Shauna's husband, David, who was black, and their mixed-race family,
01:05this was the absolute breaking point.
01:07By January 2017, Shauna had seen enough.
01:11She demanded that Frances pack her bags and get out.
01:14But Frances didn't go far.
01:16Just two months later,
01:18she moved into the newly renovated house directly across the street.
01:22What followed was a year-long campaign of psychological terror.
01:26Tensions violently boiled over in April 2017,
01:29when a brutal physical altercation broke out between the two women.
01:33Frances immediately called the police, resulting in Shauna's arrest.
01:37Even though Shauna was quickly released,
01:40Frances was consumed with rage that her former friend
01:43wasn't immediately thrown behind bars.
01:45She became convinced that David,
01:47who worked at the local jail,
01:49was using his position to protect his wife.
01:52From that moment on,
01:54stalking the Scots became Frances's entire life.
01:57She would bang on David's car windows while screaming profanities,
02:01follow Shauna to the grocery store to block her car in,
02:04shout racial slurs at their daughter,
02:06and even stand naked in front of Shauna and her grandchild.
02:10Prosecutors later revealed that Frances called the county attorney almost daily,
02:14completely infatuated with the delusion that she was the true victim.
02:18By May 2018,
02:20the legal system had finally run its course.
02:23Shauna accepted a plea deal over the initial fight,
02:26avoiding jail time completely.
02:28This pushed Frances over the edge.
02:31In a chilling recorded phone call to the police,
02:34she snapped, stating,
02:35I can't take any more of this.
02:38Today is when it stops.
02:39On May 28th,
02:40While David was out on the back porch installing security cameras to monitor their hostile neighbor,
02:46Frances walked right through the Scots' unlocked front door.
02:50Without saying a word,
02:51she raised a gun and shot Shauna directly in the face.
02:55She then calmly walked to the back porch and shot David in the chest.
02:59David tragically died at just 47 years old.
03:03Shauna miraculously survived the attack after multiple emergency surgeries,
03:07but she permanently lost sight in her left eye and hearing in her left ear.
03:12Following a brief standoff with police,
03:15Frances Zaya was apprehended.
03:17In January 2022,
03:19she accepted a plea deal,
03:21pleading guilty to murder and assault.
03:23She was sentenced to 35 years in prison,
03:26but she never offered a single word of explanation or motive.
03:29To this day,
03:30detectives say she believes she did nothing wrong.
03:33Today,
03:34Frances is serving her sentence at the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women.
03:38She won't even be eligible for parole until May 2038.
03:43For Shauna and her children,
03:45the physical and emotional scars remain,
03:47alongside a lingering,
03:49daily fear of the day their worst neighbor might walk free.
03:52She left with her telling her story.
