00:00Myanmar Hunta Chief, turned President Min Ong Leng, is set to visit Laos in the coming days,
00:06marking his first official visit to an ASEAN member state since taking on his new civilian role.
00:11The trip comes despite ASEAN's decision not to recognize Myanmar's recent election.
00:19Myanmar state media says Min will visit the country at the invitation of Laos President Tong Lun Si Sulit.
00:25The visit comes four months after his transition from military ruler to president,
00:31following elections that excluded major opposition groups.
00:35After the 2021 coup, ASEAN barred Myanmar's Hunta leaders from its summits
00:41and called for the implementation of its Five-Point Consensus Peace Plan, which had made little progress.
00:48Since the election, however, some ASEAN members have stepped up engagement with Myanmar,
00:53even as the bloc remains divided over how to respond to the country's ongoing civil war.
00:59Malaysia's Foreign Minister Datuk Sri Muhammad Hassan has stressed that his visit to Myanmar in May
01:04was aimed at keeping communication channels open and advancing the Five-Point Consensus
01:10and not an endorsement of the country's leadership.
