00:10I observed the Abarth stalking the perimeter of the forest beyond the village walls, his
00:15light-colored flesh caught the light of the moon like a piece of shiny metal. Suddenly,
00:21he darted out from the tree line and disappeared into the village. Moments later he returned
00:26carrying the body of a child, retreating back into the woods. I armed myself and followed
00:32him into a clearing. I found him feeding on the remains of the child. This is a small story
00:38from the Grimm books, about the flesh-eating Abarth.
00:45In Malay mythology, an Abarth is a mythical creature slightly resembling a unicorn. It
00:51first appeared in records in the 16th century. It is speculated that the creature developed
00:57independently from the European myths of the one-horned unicorn. Malay folks described the
01:03Abarth as a female creature, in contrast to the unicorn being represented as male. The
01:09Abarth has a single horn growing from its forehead. And, like the unicorn, a powder made from this
01:16horn supposedly served both as an aphrodisiac and as an antidote to poison. The nose of the
01:22beast is elongated like that of a horse, with large nostrils and over-lapping upper lip.
01:28Aside the fact that the Abarth sprouts a horn on its forehead like a unicorn, it doesn't actually
01:34look like a unicorn. It looks more like a juvenile Sumatran half rhinoceros. And its wild and aggressive
01:41nature is nothing like the majestic and ever-gentle unicorn. In fact, some myths describe the Abarth as
01:48a flesh-eating creature that takes delight in the flesh and blood of children. The horn of the Abarth
01:54is his primary weapon and is used to impale small children, which it then eats. Much like the tusk of
02:01an elephant or horn of a rhino, it appears to be part of the skull. It is suspected that the
02:07Abarth can see
02:08in the dark. Its movements are primarily nocturnal and it is found deep within the forest where the
02:14sun barely reaches, even in the daylight.
