00:00A baby kangaroo is born smaller than a gummy bear. At that stage, the tiny joey is completely blind,
00:06hairless, and barely developed. Yet within minutes after being born, it has to climb
00:10completely on its own into its mother's pouch. The journey is incredibly dangerous for something so
00:16tiny. Using only its front legs, the newborn slowly crawls through its mother's fur until
00:20it finally reaches the pouch opening. Once inside, the joey attaches itself to one of the mother's
00:26nipples. The nipple then swells inside the joey's mouth, helping keep it locked in place while it
00:31continues developing safely inside the pouch. For the next several months, the pouch becomes its
00:35entire world. That's where the joey grows fur, develops eyesight, and slowly becomes strong
00:40enough to peek outside for the first time. Even after leaving the pouch occasionally, young kangaroos
00:45still rush back inside whenever they feel scared or threatened. But over time, the tiny helpless joey
00:51begins changing dramatically. Its back legs grow larger and more powerful, and its thick muscular
00:56tail helps it balance while hopping.
