00:09feral chicken population gone completely out of control. If you visit Kauai you'll feel it
00:13immediately, chickens everywhere. Chickens strolling outside Walmart, chickens crossing
00:17the road while you wait at a red light, chickens sunbathing on beach grass, even keeping you
00:21company at Starbucks. It feels like walking into a giant chicken farm. Locals are driven crazy
00:26because the roosters start crowing at 3 or 4 in the morning, waking everyone up daily.
00:30So why not just catch and eat them? Here's the absurd part, locals won't eat them.
00:35These chickens dig through trash bins eating whatever garbage they find, possibly contaminated
00:39with heavy metals, so even their eggs are considered unsafe. Even crazier, local law protects them as a
00:44protected species. Unless a chicken enters your private yard, killing them in public areas is
00:48illegal. So Hawaii's chickens now live in paradise, no predators, unlimited food supply. The island
00:54currently has roughly 500,000 chickens, averaging 6 chickens per resident on Kauai.
