A 39 year old woman from Swanley is fundraising for immunotherapy in Germany, after finding out her cervical cancer has come back.

Candice Powell had beaten the cancer previously ... but now fears that her son will lose another parent.

Nailah Mahomed reports.
Transcript
00:00Candice has stage 4 cervical cancer.
00:03She previously beat the disease after a diagnosis in 2019.
00:08And after rounds of radiotherapy and chemotherapy,
00:12Candice was told she was in remission in 2020.
00:15But after persistent symptoms last year, the cancer came back.
00:20And Candice says the hospital should have picked it up sooner.
00:24I knew that there was something wrong,
00:26but you go to hospital and you think you're getting care,
00:28but you're actually not.
00:30And it just feels like the NHS has just given up on me.
00:32Like, literally, just giving up.
00:34It's not right.
00:35People should be told if there's something wrong with you,
00:37that's the reason why you go to hospital, right?
00:40Candice's main concern is leaving her son parentless.
00:44Her son, now 18, lost his father nine years ago.
00:48And Candice is worried that if she doesn't raise the money she needs
00:51for this treatment in Germany,
00:53she may be leaving her son all alone.
00:55I just need to get there and get it done.
00:57But if I don't get there, then my son will be without my parents.
01:03So, not great for me.
01:04That is all that's going through my head, is leaving that little boy.
01:08The mum is due to begin chemotherapy in the UK next month,
01:12but says it is expected to prolong her life, not cure her.
01:16So her friends have set up a GoFundMe
01:18and are fundraising to raise the £51,000 she needs
01:22to start specialist immunotherapy treatment in Germany.
01:26We're just trying our artists to do this money,
01:30and it's the community.
01:31We've helped others' people before.
01:33And unfortunately, what's the frustrating thing
01:36is the only thing that's going to help her is money.
01:39And it's sad, it's sad to see.
01:41We did not know where to start at all.
01:43So, you know, and people are giving us these booths
01:46and we don't even know them.
01:47And that's the overwhelming thing.
01:49We don't even know these people.
01:50They're strangers, and yet they're helping her.
01:52So it's great. It's great.
01:55We're going to do it. We're going to smash it.
01:57We're going to get her to Germany.
01:59A spokesperson for Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust said,
02:03we recognise how difficult it is for any patient
02:06to move from a period of remission
02:08to facing another cancer diagnosis.
02:11And we understand the impact this has on them
02:14and their family.
02:16We cannot discuss individual cases publicly.
02:19Candice has shared her concerns with us directly.
02:21We have responded to the issues she has raised
02:24and will continue to liaise with her.
02:27With Candice saying her time is running out,
02:30the pressure is on to raise the funds.
