Director Rian Johnson discusses his deliberate choice to reveal very little about Benoit Blanc's personal life in the 'Knives Out' films. He explains that the character is best understood through his process of solving each murder mystery and his relationships with the case's central figures.

00:00I'm curious about how much you choose to reveal about Benoit Blanc's personal life.
00:03We saw a little more of it in Glass Onion.
00:05He has a new haircut, which usually implies breakups.
00:08I hope they're all right.
00:10I love those two together.
00:12Yeah, I kind of have a real perspective on how to do that.
00:16I mean, for me, I feel that Benoit Blanc will always be the detective in these murder mystery movies.
00:23And that means I want to learn more about him through him solving these cases.
00:29And that usually means him forming a relationship with the protagonist, you know, Josh O'Connor's character in this one,
00:36Janelle's character in the last one, added to Armas in the previous.
00:40So it's relationship-based, but it's very much him being the detective solving this case.
00:44I never can imagine going on, like, a little side street to learn more about him or doing a flashback
00:51or something.
00:52I think he's—ultimately, these are murder mysteries, and we want to see him show up and solve them.
