This incredible side-by-side image, captured by the Hubble Space Telescope, documents a truly unique cosmic event: the disappearance of a massive star. The image on the left, from 2007, shows the star N6946-BH1, which was located in the galaxy NGC 6946 and was approximately 25 times the mass of our Sun. However, a later image from 2015 shows that the star has completely vanished, leaving no trace of a supernova explosion.

This "massive fail" is a candidate for a "failed supernova," a theoretical event where a star's core is so massive that when it collapses, the outer layers of the star fall back in on themselves instead of exploding outward. The result is the direct formation of a black hole without the brilliant flash of a supernova. This observation provides a crucial piece of evidence that a significant number of the most massive stars in the universe might meet their end by silently collapsing into black holes, a process previously unseen by astronomers.
