PEP Exclusives: PEP sits down with Bob Moffatt and Clint Moffatt who not only share the story about how Music Travel Love was formed, they also dish out life lessons that helped them enjoy doing what they love and still spend time with their respective families.
Joining them in this interview is their brother Dave Moffatt, who is one of the special guests for their Manila concert tour this weekend. As self-confessed foodie, Dave says some of his favorite Pinoy dishes are lumpia and crispy pata. #PEPInterviews #PEPRachelle #PEPExclusives

00:00Cool things. When we were in Zimbalas, what was that? We had a table full of food and we, what
00:05was that called?
00:05Yeah. Where we ate with our hands. Oh, Buddha fight. Yeah, that was cool.
00:11I like that. There was just, yeah, a lot of, we've had a lot of great experiences.
00:16It's hard to remember all the top of our heads, but amazing stuff.
00:21We've known your band from before and then you transitioned into music travel love for the two of you, Bob
00:27and Clint.
00:28And what was the concept behind it?
00:30The story goes, we were driving in our beat up Chevy, what was it? Malibu, 92 Malibu, beat up Chevy
00:41Malibu.
00:42And we were just kind of wondering, you know, what we wanted to do.
00:46You know, he had just had a son. I think his son was only like three or four months old
00:50at the time.
00:52And, you know, we were just chatting about what was important to us in our lives.
00:56You know, we had done a lot of things. You know, the Moffitts brought us a lot of joy, a
00:59lot of success in our lives.
01:01And we, you know, we were trying to build other things out.
01:05And at some point we just kind of asked ourselves what's important to us.
01:08And the biggest things were music, travel, and love.
01:12You know, family spending, making sure that whatever we decided we wanted to do, we were going to spend a
01:16lot of time with our family.
01:17We didn't want to be on a tour bus, you know, 300 days a year and not see our kids
01:20grow up.
01:23And so music, travel, love was something that really felt good.
01:26And, you know, just at that time when we were deciding to do this, there were some things kind of
01:33becoming popular on social media.
01:36One of them was there was a guy out in Bali that was taking photos at amazing locations, waterfalls, just
01:42beautiful backgrounds.
01:43And he was placing himself in these beautiful places.
01:46And we just thought it was a cool idea to pair that with music.
01:49We hadn't really seen that before.
01:51But we thought it would kind of enhance the music.
01:54I don't think we realized that it was, we were creating a brand at the time.
01:58But I think we just wanted to create interesting content for YouTube.
02:02And over the course of time, I think it's, with the consistency, our fans have kind of come to know
02:08us as people who kind of show them beautiful places.
02:12And it kind of lets people escape into these great places that they didn't even know existed in the music,
02:17you know.
02:18And then how do you choose the songs that you'd cover?
02:22Or like, have you ever thought of creating an original one?
02:25We've done quite a few originals.
02:27We've probably done five or six, maybe a little bit more original music, Christmas songs.
02:32We typically write a Christmas song for at the end of every year.
02:36We have a lot of fun doing that.
02:37But as far as the songs go, you know, there's just so many great songs.
02:41And typically we just pick a song that is something that we've loved for a long time and something that
02:46comes to us really naturally.
02:50There's just so many songs that we grew up listening to.
02:52And sometimes when we pick up an acoustic guitar and we feel like, oh, this is going to be great,
02:57and we hash it out, it turns out that it doesn't actually always sound great.
03:02And we should probably just spend a little, you know, not do it yet, you know.
03:05Songs take time.
03:07Even though we do a lot of our stuff, it sounds like it's similar, you know, because it's just on
03:10the acoustic guitar and vocal majority of the time.
03:12And it does take a long time to kind of understand a song well enough that when you sit down
03:18and you sing it, it sounds like it's your song.
03:20And so, you know.
03:22Not beyond the songs.
03:24Yeah.
03:25But it just takes a minute to kind of understand how you want to sing it.
03:29The key that works well for you, the tempo that works well for you, the feel, the groove.
03:33Because that's the thing that makes artists unique and different, right?
03:36I mean, I think the formula of songwriting has, people have figured it out.
03:40The great songwriters have figured out the formulas, you know, from Ed Sheeran to Brian Adams to Elton John, and
03:47the list goes on.
03:48You know, most of the time when you start to strip these songs back to just a acoustic guitar, you
03:52realize that they're very similar, but different.
03:56And the things that make them different is, you know, the interpretation of the artist, the rhythm and the groove
04:02and the feel in how they sing, you know.
04:04You know, a song performed by Michael Jackson, performed by Barry Gibbs is going to sound like a very different
04:10record, or Brian Adams.
04:13And that's just the perspective of being a great artist and having your own, I don't know, vision on how
04:21you hear it.
04:21And so for us, we try to do the same thing, and it takes a long time.
04:25Sometimes it comes a little more natural than others, certain songs, but there's certain songs that push us and make
04:31us work, you know, to really understand it.
04:34How do you choose the people that you would work with?
04:37That's easier.
04:38I mean, you know, when you work with talented people, it makes your entire world around you better.
04:44You know, I mean, if you can find people that can complement what you do, it just enhances.
04:50So we're always looking for amazing talent, and our brothers, you know, just so happens to be one of them.
04:57And so we've been able to collaborate with him and do some great stuff together, and I hope we can
05:02do some more in the future.
05:04With collaborations, it just comes down to the voice, number one, and then the person.
05:09You know, the person's really important.
05:12Luckily, here in the Philippines, there's so many amazing people as well on top of it that are kind.
05:18And, I mean, you can have a great voice, but if you're not kind, you know, it's a little harder
05:24to work with you.
05:25So for us, this country has given us an immense amount of talent to dive into and work with.
05:32And I think Bob and I also, one of the things we love more than anything is helping other artists,
05:38you know, find their sound and achieve their best.
05:45How did that work out for you, that plan that you can have a work-life balance, like pursue your
05:52passion at the same time, have time for your families?
05:56What do you think, Dave?
05:58How do you balance your life, man?
06:01Well, I don't balance my life.
06:04My life is just work.
06:05That's all I do.
06:07But you guys have families, so this question is definitely weird.
06:10That is true.
06:10We have families, and I think it's really important, if you do have families, you know, to make time, you
06:18know, because life is short, and it really is.
06:21You know, the older that you get, the more you realize how quickly it goes by.
06:27And I think you have to also, you know, it's a challenge.
06:31You know, in life, there's lots of things.
06:34There's lots of moving parts, and there's responsibilities.
06:36But at the end of the day, sometimes people forget that they make their own decisions.
06:43You know, for us to be able to have time and spend time with our family, you have to make
06:46those decisions.
06:47You have to sometimes be willing to say no to things.
06:50You have to sometimes be willing to say yes to things, you know.
06:53And so, at the end of the day, you just have to take ownership of the fact that, hey, you
06:58know what, this can wait.
07:01This is what's important to me.
07:03Prioritize the things in your life that matter.
07:06And once you start doing that, living like that, it gets a little bit easier to prioritize things.
07:11Okay.
