Styles was performing his signature "whale spit" moment, where he sprays water into the air, when he suddenly appeared to inhale or choke on the water. The British singer immediately clutched at his chest before falling backward onto the stage. As the crowd continued chanting "Kiwi," a nod to one of his most popular songs, many fans initially seemed unaware that something had gone wrong. Styles remained on the ground for roughly 30 seconds, visibly heaving and attempting to loosen his tie while recovering.
