00:00Have you ever wondered what happens when an entire island just shuts down?
00:04No cars, no lights, no flights, just absolute undisturbed silence.
00:10Well, that kind of total silence is a very real thing during Yapi.
00:14It's a day of profound reflection, where even a bustling international airport actually locks its doors.
00:21This happens on the only Hindu-majority island in Indonesia,
00:24and it really goes to show that Bali isn't just a tropical getaway.
00:28It's a living, breathing, spiritual ecosystem.
00:32Welcome to This Explainer.
00:33Today, we're going on a cinematic journey way past those crowded beaches and tourist cafes,
00:38and we're heading straight into the island's ancient soul, Bali Beyond the Postcard.
00:43We're going to see exactly why this province absolutely captivates the world,
00:46and trust me, it starts with something way deeper than just sand and surf.
00:51Chapter 1, The Spirit, Temples Carved in Stone and Shaped by Water.
00:56You know, Bali's unique spirituality anchors its entire identity.
01:00Let's look back to 962 A.D. That's when Tirta Impol was built.
01:05It's this beautiful holy spring where, for literally over a thousand years, locals have gone for spiritual purification.
01:11And then, by the 11th century, you have the magnificent 7-meter-tall shrines of Gunungkawi,
01:15which were carved directly into a sheer rock face to house ancient royalty.
01:19This incredible reverence carried right into the 20th century with these grand royal palaces.
01:24You've got Taman Ujang from 1909, which beautifully blends Balinese artistry with European elegance.
01:30And then there's Tirta Ganga in 1948, which translates to holy water from the Ganges.
01:35In Bali, water isn't just a resource, it's the ultimate source of life.
01:38But honestly, perhaps nothing represents Balinese devotion quite like the number 23.
01:43Besiki, which is known as the Mother Temple of Bali, isn't just a single building.
01:47It's actually a massive, sprawling complex of 23 distinct temples, all built like a giant staircase on the side of
01:54an active volcano.
01:56And get this, when that very volcano erupted back in 1963, the temple miraculously survived almost entirely undamaged.
02:03That incredible survival really cemented its status as a profoundly sacred site.
02:08Chapter 2. The Land. The Rhythm of Volcanoes, Waterfalls, and Emerald Terraces.
02:153031. That is the towering height in meters of Mount Agung.
02:20This active volcano is way more than just a geological wonder.
02:24It's the imposing, majestic backdrop to all of life in Bali.
02:27And it's literally revered as the home of the gods.
02:31Reaching its summit is no joke.
02:32It requires a grueling, day-long trek right through thick, untamed forests.
02:37And that mountain water flows all the way down, breathing life into the slopes through a system called subac.
02:43This UNESCO-recognized, deeply ancient irrigation system is far more than just a way to farm.
02:49It represents this beautiful, philosophical connection between the Balinese people and their land.
02:54They manage and share water across these terraced hillsides,
02:57so that entire communities can survive and really thrive in perfect harmony with nature.
03:03This ingenuity shapes a physical landscape that you can actually walk through today.
03:07Just near Ubud, the Tegelalong Rice Terraces offer these incredibly steep, historic slopes.
03:13They're famous for dramatic sunrise views and getting you up close and personal with local farmers.
03:18But if you travel just a little bit further, you'll find Jatului.
03:22This is a deeply serene, peaceful expanse, covering over 600 hectares of rolling green hills.
03:28Both of these rely on that brilliant subac system, but they offer you two beautifully contrasting,
03:34truly cinematic experiences of Bali's agricultural heart.
03:37Nestled right near those historic slopes is the Ubud Monkey Forest.
03:41Just imagine an ancient sanctuary roughly the size of 27 football fields, completely swallowed by a wild jungle.
03:48You've got over 186 plant species hiding three ancient temples in there.
03:52But the true rulers of this place?
03:54That would be the 700 long-tailed macaques that just roam freely.
03:58It's this magical, kind of chaotic intersection where raw nature is actively reclaiming sacred ground.
04:03As we push further north, the landscape fractures into a thrilling playground of hidden waterfalls.
04:09There's Sucumpil, where seven separate falls plunge together into crystal-clear pools.
04:14If you're looking for pure adventure, Oling Oling offers a massive 35-meter drop with natural rock water slides.
04:20If you're seeking some tranquility, Obanyumala hides twin waterfalls in a totally quiet rainforest.
04:26And then there's Fiji, three incredibly remote falls pouring down sheer emerald cliffs.
04:31This right here is the raw, pulsing heartbeat of northern Bali.
04:36Chapter 3. The Edges
04:38Where dramatic cliffs meet the crashing Indian Ocean.
04:41We're leaving the lush interior now and approaching the very boundaries of the island.
04:46Protecting these coastal edges are two formidable guardians, Uluwatu and Tana Lod.
04:52Uluwatu clings precariously to a sheer cliff that drops directly into the ocean,
04:57and it was built specifically to ward off evil spirits.
05:00Meanwhile, Tana Lod is this absolute architectural marvel rising straight out of an ocean rock.
05:06It's battered continuously by waves, totally inaccessible during high tide,
05:10and stands completely isolated against these fiery ocean sunsets.
05:14And it's right at the cliffs of Uluwatu, where you can witness the legendary Ketchok dance.
05:19Picture this.
05:20The sun is dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in deep purples and reds.
05:25While a group of men sit in a circle, there are absolutely no instruments.
05:29It's just the hypnotic, rhythmic chanting of their voices, acting as the soundtrack while they perform the Ramayana.
05:35An ancient Indian epic, it is a completely mesmerizing ritual that basically bridges the physical world with the mythological.
05:42But you know, Bali's dedication to its legends isn't just stuck in ancient history.
05:47The Garuda Vishnu Kinshana Cultural Park is home to an absolute 120-meter-tall behemoth.
05:52We're talking about one of the tallest statues in the entire world,
05:56depicting the Hindu god Vishnu riding the mythical bird Garuda.
05:59It's this colossal, totally modern testament to the island's enduring spiritual heritage.
06:04Finally, our explainer takes us across the water to the untamed edges of the province, the three Noosa Islands.
06:10Noosa Panita offers these awe-inspiring, literal T-Rex-shaped cliffs in deep currents where giant manta rays just glide
06:16through the water.
06:17Just a short boat ride away, Noosa Lombogun is a total study in contrasts.
06:21It's where the explosive ocean power at Devil's Tear meets the really quiet, slow tradition of local seaweed farming.
06:27And connected to it by an iconic yellow bridge is Noosa Chinningen,
06:30which is a total haven of bright turquoise waters and adventurous cliff jumping.
06:34So as we wrap up this visual journey, I want you to remember this.
06:38Bali is so much more than just an island.
06:41It is a profound, living spirit just waiting to be explored.
06:44From the absolute silence of Yapi to those roaring northern waterfalls and hypnotic cliffside chants,
06:50the land and the divine are completely intertwined.
06:52So what part of this living spirit would you explore first?
06:55Thank you so much for joining me for this episode.
