00:07The eyes of football fans across the globe have turned to the World Cup, which runs until
00:11the 19th of July.
00:13Watching tense, fast-paced games requires a great deal of focus, but so does consuming
00:17World Cup content online, given that false pictures, images and videos are increasingly
00:22doing the rounds.
00:23For instance, social media users shared a photo of a football supporter who looked like
00:28Adolf Hitler, but the image was in fact altered and no such fan resembling Hitler was present
00:33at the game.
00:34We uploaded the photo to OpenAI's verification tool, which detected a synth ID in a visible
00:39watermark that indicates the image was AI generated.
00:43Social media users also placed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the stands of
00:48the Argentina-Austria game on the 22nd of June.
00:52There were no credible reports that he attended the match and we found yet another synth ID
00:56on the image, showing it was falsified.
00:58This post alleges that Swedish footballer Lukas Bergwahl told journalists that he appreciated
01:04all the love and support he was receiving from fans.
01:06He supposedly went on to add that every woman who has a crush on him should stop voting for
01:11mass migration or his people would not exist anymore.
01:14We transcribed the clip, but there was no mention of migration.
01:18Instead the clip dates back to March and shows Bergwahl answering a question ahead of a Sweden-Poland
01:23football match.
01:24Another false image depicted the UK's outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer in a Croatia jersey
01:29alongside former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner.
01:32With a reverse image search we found the original photo, which proved the real image had been
01:37altered.
