Transcript
00:00From discussion on music and culture to mental health and the use of social media,
00:06award-winning French and Congolese rapper Yousufa joined content creators and media professionals in Brussels
00:12for a conversation about the issues shaping a new generation for African youth.
00:17The gathering formed part of the Kuman X Brussels initiative built around the popular Ivorian podcast
00:24Laissons parler les gens, which uses humour and culture to spark conversations and issues affecting young Africans
00:32and their engagement online. Yousufa acknowledged part of the challenges confronting the African youth
00:38in the digital age, including cyberbullying and harassment. He, however, urged the youth to focus on the positives.
00:55là, quel qu'on soit l'endroit,
01:16The day began with workshops bringing together researchers and institutional actors to discuss
01:21how digital platforms can better connect with younger audiences, encourage civic participation,
01:27and how it can be used for social change. Participants also took part in a listening club
01:33discussing episodes of the podcast which tackle issues ranging from online hate speech, malicious AI-generated
01:40material, and cyberbullying to mental health, gender-based violence, and geopolitical discourse.
01:46Discussing the issues is one thing, and preferring solutions is yet another, as one of the participants
01:51shared.
02:18Some of the themes here tonight have explored new ways of engaging the African youth through
02:23humour, culture, and digital storytelling.
02:26For organisers, this would help young Africans to better express themselves in a way that
02:31can facilitate social cohesion, combat hate speech, cyberbullying, among other things.
02:37Jerry Fisayo Bambi for Euronews.
