00:00Just hours after Datuk Dr. Muhammad Puad Zakashi's shock exit from UMNO, the party's secretary-general is offering a very
00:07different explanation, and it has nothing to do with palace interference.
00:11UMNO secretary-general Datuk Dr. Ashraf Wajdi Dusuki claims Puad actually quit the party because UMNO refused to consider his
00:18son as its candidate for the renget seat.
00:21Ashraf said he was saddened by Puad's resignation, but dismissed his claims of external interference in Yoho UMNO as slanderous
00:29and misleading.
00:30While acknowledging Puad's son was young and showed leadership potential, Ashraf said candidate selection involves multiple factors and cannot rest
00:38on family succession alone, adding it was inappropriate for a veteran leader to pressure the party that way.
00:44Ashraf also claimed this isn't the first time Puad has threatened to quit over personal demands, alleging he made a
00:51similar threat during Datuk Seri Najib Razak's presidency when he wasn't renominated as Batu Pahad MP.
00:56The claims come a day after Barisan National unveiled its full slate of 56 candidates for the Johor election.
