Wilfred Thesiger was one of Britain's great explorers and writers. His greatest journeys were through the world's largest sand desert: the Empty Quarter of the Arabian Peninsula. Inspired by their hero, adventurers Alastair Humphreys and Leon McCarron attempt a journey of their own into the Empty Quarter. Their trip is hastily-planned and low budget: unable to afford camels they instead hope to drag a homemade steel cart (filled with 300kg of supplies) through the ferocious desert heat. This film is their story.

00:03This expedition hasn't turned out at all how I thought it would and perhaps that's why I've
00:07enjoyed it so much. I've just sent an email to Leon, he's a friend of a friend. Would you be
00:12interested in a long walk? Six to eight weeks, desert, pulling a cart, home for Christmas.
00:19Who can possibly say no to that? Even though I didn't know this guy very well I really couldn't
00:24say no. This is the sort of thing I love. Wilfred Thestier was an icon of British
00:29adventure. His greatest journey was crossing the Empty Quarter Desert and ever
00:33since I first read Thestier's book I've dreamt that one day I'd make a journey of
00:37my own into the Empty Quarter. We have no idea what to do with camels so instead we
00:44will pull all of our supplies in a homemade cart.
00:50This could be turning me to a very bad idea.
00:55This is a serious desert and you can't make mistakes.
01:01We've walked for hundreds and hundreds of miles already and yet before we get across this desert
01:06we've still got across hundreds and hundreds more miles of this endless flat gravel plain
01:12and it's mentally so hard to do.
01:14All the bland featureless things that attracted me to come out here and now I just feel in the knot
01:19and it's so rubbish.
01:26We just walk every day. It's a really simple life and that simplicity is growing on me.
01:32It's hard but it's growing on me.
01:34I just feel so excited to be out here again.
01:42I'm really going out and do things to see what life has to offer. It's hard but it's wonderful.
01:50This is not the Middle East of CNN or Fox News. This is the real Middle East of some of
01:56the kindest, most generous people I've ever met.
02:00Suddenly this is feeling like a real 21st century version of the journey that Bethsa to took.
