The government will install 3,000 solar-powered LED streetlights at 32 highway accident blackspots nationwide under the Pantau Madani programme, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said on Tuesday (June 23).

The RM25.24 million project targets stretches with higher crash risk at night and in bad weather, identified through accident data analysis.

01:01The streetlights run on solar power,
01:04requiring just four and a half hours of sunlight to charge.
01:07Equipped with deep cycle batteries,
01:09they can keep working for up to two days
01:11even during cloudy or rainy conditions,
01:13addressing one of the biggest risk factors
01:15behind night time highway accidents.
01:17The southern region will see the most installations,
01:20with 1,305 streetlights across 11 locations,
01:24followed by the northern and eastern regions
01:26with around 690 units each,
01:29and the central region with 314 units.
01:32The lights will be installed along several major highways,
01:36including the North-South Expressway,
01:37the Seremban Port Dixon Highway,
01:40the Kuala Lumpur Carrick Expressway,
01:42and the East Coast Expressway.
01:44The project, costing 25.24 million ringgit,
01:48is expected to be completed by the end of November.
