00:00Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first.
00:06That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party.
00:11I have spoken to His Majesty the King this morning to inform him of my decision.
00:17I will ask the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party
00:21to set out a timetable with nominations opening on the 9th of July
00:26and completed by the summer recess.
00:29In the case of a contest, this will ensure a new leader is in place
00:33before Parliament returns in September.
00:37I will remain in post as Prime Minister until the contest is complete
00:42and I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power.
00:49I will also give my successor my full and unequivocal support
00:55knowing that they will inherit a Britain that is far stronger and fairer
00:59than the one I inherited two years ago,
01:02better prepared for the challenges ahead
01:04and better able to ensure the Labour Party secures a second term in office.
01:11I want to thank all of those friends and colleagues
01:14who have been at my side for these past six years or so
01:19for their incredible commitment, service and support.
01:24I want to thank the brilliant Number 10 staff and our country's extraordinary
01:28civil service who dedicate their lives to public service.
01:34And when I leave the biggest job in the country,
01:38I shall spend more time on the most important job.
01:42Being the best husband I can to my fantastic wife, Vic,
01:47who has been a rock by my side through good times and bad.
01:52and being the best dad I can to my beautiful children
01:56who are my pride and my joy.
02:00Thank you very much.
