2004 - Wien (May 24, 2004)
Transcript
00:00I
01:15My principle always was, and I grew up in Vienna making music, and I also grew up as a young
01:21man in America making music, and was very fortunate to play with the best.
01:25And all the best musicians always had one principle. First, is you must play good music, but it must be
01:34entertaining.
01:35And that was my principle, to play interesting music, good music, but if it is not entertaining, it's nothing.
01:42Well, they find me, I tell you, it's easier, because these people grew up partly with my music, especially a
01:49guy like Linley, the bass player.
01:52And they are young, and they came up with the report, you know, and by Miles Davis.
01:57And these people know, if they get in the band, it's not very easy to get in this band.
02:03This is not something which is, ba-ba-ba-ba, you play one piece, very good, then you play the
02:08next piece, very good.
02:09We don't do that. We tell stories. Every night is different. Nothing is greater than the human voice, because we
02:15speak, and while we speak, and we learn who we are.
02:20And, you know, you can say something, and the other person will know what you're doing.
02:24Then, to put this into music, you cannot do that, but a music can become a language.
02:32And that's what, you know, what I want people to have, to be honest to themselves.
02:37And to musicians, I want to say, learn how to play your instrument, and copy as much as you want.
02:45But there's got to be one point in one musician's life to make up his mind if he wants to
02:51be a person, or just a player.
02:55And what I mean with that is when you become a person, as a musician, then you have this personality,
03:01which people will cling on to.
03:04Not everybody, and that's not necessary. Music is entertainment. Music is a muse.
