Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva is one of the most beloved and widely venerated figures in Mahāyāna Buddhism. Revered as the embodiment of infinite compassion, Avalokiteśvara is believed to hear the cries and suffering of all sentient beings and respond with wisdom, protection, and loving-kindness. The name Avalokiteśvara can be translated as “The Lord Who Looks Down Upon the World” or “The One Who Hears the Cries of the World.”
According to Buddhist tradition, Avalokiteśvara made a great vow to assist all beings in overcoming suffering and attaining liberation. This boundless compassion is symbolized through many sacred forms, including the Four-Armed Form (Shadakshari Lokeshvara), the Eleven-Headed Form (Ekadasamukha), and the Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Form (Sahasrabhuja Avalokiteśvara), whose many hands and eyes represent the ability to see and help countless beings simultaneously.
Avalokiteśvara is worshipped throughout Asia under different names and cultural expressions. Despite these variations, all forms represent the same universal qualities of mercy, compassion, and spiritual guidance.
