00:00Subject, Suggestion for Rainwater Harvesting and Water Conservation in Housing Societies
00:06Respected Chairman, Managing Committee Members and Residents
00:10Mumbai has thousands of housing societies, ranging from family-friendly cooperative societies to luxurious residential complexes.
00:20As of 2025, there are more than 6,900 registered housing societies in the city.
00:28Before finding a solution to the water crisis, it is important to identify the exact nature of the problem.
00:37Common causes include
00:38Water shortage or low water supply
00:42Reduction in BMC water supply or supply timings
00:47Increased water demand during summer
00:50Failure of borewells or tanker-dependent systems
00:54Excessive water usage for building construction
00:58Complete dependence on BMC water supply
01:02Lack of proper rainwater harvesting and storage facilities
01:06Most societies depend entirely on BMC water.
01:11However, this is the right time to adopt rainwater harvesting and water storage systems.
01:18I suggest that societies install flat water storage tanks of 5000 liters capacity or larger and in greater numbers depending
01:28on their water requirements and available space.
01:32These tanks can be used to collect and store rainwater during the monsoon season.
01:38This stored water should not be used directly for drinking purposes.
01:44Instead, qualified technicians can be engaged to install suitable filtration and treatment systems so that the water can be used
01:53for gardening, cleaning, flushing, and other non-potable purposes.
01:57In societies that have borewells, harvested rainwater can also be used for groundwater recharge, helping to improve borewell water levels
02:08over time.
02:09By gradually implementing these measures, housing societies can become more self-reliant and reduce their dependence on external water sources.
02:19In the future, with proper treatment and advanced systems, societies may even be able to harvest and process water suitable
02:29for drinking.
02:30The BMC is already handling enormous responsibilities and infrastructure demands.
02:36While the authorities are doing their best, citizens and housing societies should also contribute by conserving water and reducing unnecessary
02:47pressure on municipal resources.
02:50I sincerely request all housing societies and their respected committee members to consider implementing rainwater harvesting systems before the monsoon
03:00season ends.
03:02Thank you for your time and consideration.
03:04Yours sincerely, Ramesh B. Knight
