00:00Now, police use this yellow device, which clamps onto your windshield with 1,000 pounds of suction.
00:05But a group of college students completely cracked it in 48 hours.
00:08It is called the barnacle.
00:10It weighs 17 pounds, stretches over 3 feet wide, and the idea behind it is simple.
00:15It blocks the driver's visibility, so you cannot run without paying the fine.
00:19And if you try to rip it off by force, the windshield breaks before the seal does.
00:23Normally, you have to scan a QR code, pay the fine, and enter a four-digit code into the keypad
00:28to release it.
00:28But when the University of Oklahoma deployed them, the students tore the system apart in two days.
00:33One figured out that running the car defroster for 15 minutes weakened the suction enough to slide a credit card
00:39under the seal.
00:40Another wrapped the device in aluminum foil to completely block its GPS tracking.
00:44And then, the shocking part.
00:46Another student realized the device contained a SIM card with unlimited data,
00:50so he hacked it to get free internet on his phone for months, forcing the police to change the whole
00:55design.
