00:00What awaits him, the opportunity of his lifetime.
00:43As an Olympic hero and a representative of all 50 states, it's no secret that I'm not
00:54a big fan of the state of Texas.
00:57And I saw your little flag, people, and it's missing about 49 other stars.
01:06And to be honest, I'm glad I'm having my match here tonight, because tonight, I can illustrate
01:14a point.
01:16Chris Benoit, even these 65,000 bull-riding, beer-bellied Texas yeehaws know that I have
01:27never and will never tap out to you.
01:33And by the way, people, lose the freaking cowboy hat.
01:38You're not seven years old anymore, please.
01:41He's talking to you, lose the freaking cowboy hat.
01:44I heard him, Paul.
01:46Please, can you imagine a man broadcasting WrestleMania wearing a hat?
02:03The following contest is scheduled for football.
02:06From Olympic to Alberta, Canada, weighing 229 pounds, Chris Benoit.
02:14It's interesting to me that last year at WrestleMania, Benoit, Angle, and Sheriff were involved in
02:20a triple threat match, where Angle was both the European and the Intercontinental Champion.
02:26Benoit left that WrestleMania with the Intercontinental title.
02:31Well, this match is about pride.
02:34Both these men this week suffered a great indignity.
02:39Both of them had attached to the other one's submission hold.
02:43And right now, I am so excited to see Benoit versus Angle.
02:48This is as excited as a man can get with his clothes on.
02:56No peer in the eyes of either Benoit or Angle.
03:00Angle.
03:01There's a young man from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Chris Benoit.
03:05Kurt Angle from Pittsburgh, the 1996 Olympic gold medal winner in freestyle wrestling.
03:10One of the greatest amateur wrestlers in the history of America.
03:15No doubt about it, I cannot believe it.
03:17And now, first takedown goes to Angle.
03:21Angle shooting that single leg takedown.
03:23And can do it as well as anybody that has ever been on an amateur map.
03:27And Angle back in the dominant position, but not for long.
03:34Chris Benoit says he's the best technical wrestler in the WWF.
03:40And I suppose, Paul, that it was up to Kurt Angle to prove him wrong.
03:44Well, both of these men are jockeying for a position.
03:47It's all about leverage.
03:49And here's Kurt Angle.
03:51Again, another takedown by Angle, who is not just a great amateur wrestler, but a damn fine federation champion as
03:58well.
04:00Angle has accomplished more in his short career in the WWF than anyone in WWF history.
04:06From my research, and both men are back up to their vertical base, looking each other in the eye.
04:13And what accomplishments by Chris Benoit.
04:16He was an undefeated WCW champion.
04:19This man knows what he's doing in the ring.
04:21What an unbelievable, what an even matchup this is this evening.
04:25This is what they call a pick-em.
04:29Speed break, let's go.
04:30One, two.
04:31Angle started wrestling in the amateurs at six years of age.
04:35Of course, Benoit went a different route, went through the famed dungeon, the Hart Family Dungeon in Calgary.
04:42And also the New Japan Dojo in Tokyo.
04:47Benoit utilizing the legendary dynamite kid as a youngster.
04:53And now Angle picking up Benoit.
04:55Picks him down.
04:56And look at Angle right back in the offensive position here.
04:59But Benoit, the master of the equivalent of crossface, setting out.
05:04Both men, both men need to avoid getting on their back.
05:08You want to avoid the pinning predicament.
05:12It's all about leverage.
05:19Angle, making sure his shoulders stay off the canvas.
05:22And Angle looking with that ankle lock.
05:25Both these men, if these two guys are so focused on winning by submission, it could be a mistake.
05:35It eliminates an entire thought process, an entire offensive avenue, if you will.
05:44Well, pride is a dangerous thing.
05:46It taps into your ego.
05:48And both of these competitors right now need to be conscious of one thing.
05:53The other man is equally as dangerous as yourself.
05:57Benoit needs to take the fight to Angle.
05:59Angle needs to take the fight to Benoit.
06:03Angle with that single leg kick up.
06:04Now Benoit is back.
06:06Benoit knows it.
06:06He's going to the crossface!
06:08Benoit looking for the equipment crossface.
06:10Angle feels it, senses it, knows it, and gets to the rope where referee Jack Doan asks for the break
06:19and gets it.
06:21They may not fear each other, but they certainly respect each other's submission holds.
06:26Angle has to respect the crossface.
06:28It made Angle tap for the first time in his life, and Benoit, Benoit has to respect the ankle lock.
06:34I've never seen Benoit tap either, and Angle made him tap on the back down.
06:39Look out here!
06:41Angle turn it.
06:42The back panel's allowed to those ropes in his legs under the bottom rope, which will cause yet another break,
06:48and Angle's gonna think about it.
06:51Well, this is like when a quarterback goes out of bounds in football.
06:55It gives you a moment to recoup.
06:57It gives you a moment to collect your thoughts.
06:59And this also throws Benoit off of his game plan, which Angle needs to do,
07:05because quite frankly, Benoit, so far, has outwrestled Angle.
07:19Angle again, with another takedown.
07:22I don't know about, but wholeheartedly say that.
07:25He's going for it again!
07:26Angle, again, too close to the ropes for the crupper crossface to be effective.
07:32Angle has had several takedowns in this.
07:38Angle just decked him!
07:40Count Angle just made this a brawl!
07:43He was being outwrestled by Benoit, and now he's turned it into a fight!
07:48Angle, right hand, deviating from his amateur teachings and his amateur style that we have seen in this match.
08:03Benoit's face bouncing off the end of the announce table.
08:06Now watch this! Angle got fired!
08:08He nails Benoit!
08:10I cannot believe what a brilliant, brilliant move that was by Kurt Angle!
08:17Benoit got too preoccupied with the official, and Angle took advantage of it.
08:23Benoit had his eyes on the referee, and Angle leveled the rabid Wolverine.
08:29From the gold medal in the Olympics to the World Wrestling Federation, have you ever seen a man adapt to
08:35the WWF style quicker than Kurt Angle?
08:39Watch this!
08:41He just wailed Benoit into those wing steps!
08:45You can hear the impact.
08:46Whoo!
08:48Well, that shot right to the steel steps, which are still dislodged, here on the outside.
08:56Hard suplex by Kurt Angle.
08:58One, two!
08:59Angle looking for the three, found two on that occasion.
09:03Kurt Angle is not only my Olympic hero, he's my WWF hero.
09:07He can wrestle, he can brawl, Kurt Angle can do it all.
09:15Face lock into the suplex again.
09:18One, two!
09:18Angle, the near leg, with the right shoulder of Benoit able to come off the canvas.
09:24And notice, now Angle would be satisfied with a pinfall.
09:28Kurt Angle wants to beat Chris Benoit.
09:31He wants to lead WrestleMania with a victory.
09:37Last year at WrestleMania, that Triple Red matchup with these two and Chris Jericho.
09:43Angle not even involved in any of the decisions, but lost two titles.
09:48Well, that's why the man has gone postal.
09:51He achieved such greatness, and it always gets stolen from him.
09:55But tonight, tonight Kurt Angle is determined to leave WrestleMania a winner.
10:01Get in the ring!
10:02Angle driving the elbow, the point of the elbow right in the sternum of Chris Benoit.
10:09And Benoit, you have to be impressed with his toughness because, quite frankly,
10:16a lesser athlete after the suplexes and the punishment.
10:20And then a Benoit fight back.
10:22And you know, Benoit has never experienced anything like that in the amateur.
10:29Beautiful, beautiful belly-to-belly throw by Kurt Angle taking down Chris Benoit.
10:34And now Kurt Angle may be making a mistake here strategically.
10:41Well, I can't disagree with you, but then again, I can't tell you that Angle doesn't know what he's doing.
10:46Just watch him.
10:47Everything he does is with purpose.
10:51Another belly-to-belly overhead suplex by Kurt Angle.
10:56Angle has done it all here in the WWF in the short time that he has been here.
11:01that he has been in this industry getting paid to compete.
11:08Angle reminds me a lot of Jack Briscoe at this stage of the game who, in my view,
11:14was perhaps the greatest of all time that went from the amateurs into sports entertainment.
11:20You're just a fan of the Briscoes because they're from Oklahoma.
11:23Me, I'm a fan of Kurt Angle.
11:25Don't tell me why I'm a fan of the Briscoes.
11:27You're not Karnak.
11:28You're not reading my mind.
11:30I don't need to read your mind or be Karnak, but I'm telling you.
11:33Kurt Angle blows away everybody that ever came before him.
11:37And now Benoit.
11:38Benoit has to fight his way out of Karn's way.
11:42And these two are going for it all.
11:46Angle with the overhead right since I'm not benched tops of his own.
11:50Benoit counters knee into the abdomen and down goes Kurt Angle.
11:54The match becoming more and more physical.
11:57More and more intense as it moves along here.
12:01After starting out in almost a one-upmanship in amateur wrestling.
12:09Reverse elbow to knock down.
12:11An angle.
12:12Left shoulder off the canvas.
12:14But I think another story's being told now.
12:17Benoit also would be satisfied with a pinfall victory.
12:20Snap suplex.
12:23Both these men, whether you like that.
12:26Our fans like angles of philosophy are not irrelevant.
12:30Benoit's are not irrelevant.
12:32Both these guys are very bright individuals.
12:34They can't become one dimensional and only want to win by submission.
12:42Benoit's gonna do here with the former Olympian.
12:46Now this is a dynamite kid style superplex.
12:50And way out of town goes Angle.
12:52Superplex right on the top.
12:54Both men down.
12:56And referee Jack Doan has the opportunity here to utilize a ten count.
13:01One, two.
13:02There's a cover by Benoit.
13:04One, two, three.
13:06Great presence of mind by Kurt Angle.
13:09He gets the shoulder up.
13:11He makes sure, he makes sure that shoulder is clearly up before the count of three.
13:19Turning first into the Irish.
13:22Now, beautiful suplex by Benoit.
13:24Holding on pugnaciously with the waistline.
13:28That's a second suplex.
13:31And Angle's eyes becoming very glazed and rightfully so after that impact.
13:37Benoit wants to hit one more.
13:39And now Angle goes for it.
13:41Angle, the takedown.
13:44Come on.
13:46And Angle looks up.
13:47Angle lock.
13:49And wait, Benoit counters.
13:52Benoit's got the ankle lock on Kurt Angle.
13:55Crisp Benoit.
13:56Pulling a page out of Kurt Angle's foot.
13:59And Angle.
14:00Look at Angle, those shots.
14:01My God.
14:02Right to the ear.
14:03Right to the temple of Benoit.
14:05If you're gonna screw up a man's...
14:07He's going for it again!
14:08He's got it!
14:10The cross face.
14:12Angle turning the blanket.
14:14Look at Angle's right on the arm.
14:16He's trying to counter.
14:18Into a pending predicament here.
14:22And now Angle has got the cross face on Benoit.
14:28Benoit knows exactly what everybody else has been feeling now.
14:33Keep him up!
14:34I have never in my life seen a greater display of hold and counter hold
14:41than I have tonight between Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit.
14:57And Kurt Angle's talking.
15:00And Angle's tapping out.
15:01Kurt Angle's tapping!
15:02Kurt Angle tapping!
15:03Angle tapping out and...
15:05Kurt Angle is tapping!
15:09y Chris Benloff, Chris Benloff had Kurt Angle beat
15:15Come on, 1,000 miles
15:19Benloff, with Angle back up
15:21for the Angle Slam
15:26the Kurt Angle Olympic Slam
15:32Benloff, refusing to stay down
15:35Never, never have I seen someone kick out of the Angle Slam
15:39and now Kurt Angle has to wonder, what will it take to put away Chris Benloff
15:48Benloff, with a bad break there, the referee down
15:52Angle probably won't want to admit that he tapped out, but he darn sure was tapping
15:59And now look at Angle
16:02He likes to use the moonsault here
16:04And Benloff knows that as well as we do and got his knees up
16:10Benloff drove his own knees into the body of Kurt Angle who was in no position to change direction
16:18And now Benloff showing up
16:20But in the meantime, watch Angle
16:22Don't believe it before, but Benloff with great presence of mind
16:26And Benloff with a headbutt
16:29Benloff using his own head like a weapon off the top
16:34And this should be all here
16:36And no, Angle kicked out before the three
16:39This one really beginning to heat up here
16:43Again, the waist lock and the low blow
16:53Angle got the low blow in
16:56Armbar takeover
16:57Wait a minute
16:58Angle
16:59Angle
17:00Angle
17:00Angle
17:01Angle
17:02Angle
17:02Angle
17:03Angle
17:04Angle
17:05Angle
17:06Angle
17:06Angle
17:08Angle
17:09Angle
17:10Angle has defeated Chris Benloff at WrestleMania
17:14But by God, I think Angle pulled Benloff's tights
17:38And there's no more leverage in hitting a man than holding on to his rights
17:43The winner, my Olympic hero, Kurt Angle
17:46Angle
17:47Angle
17:48As you said, this rivalry is not bull
