The largest underground lake in Europe is in the southern Swiss canton of Valais in St-Léonard, not far from the cantonal capital, Sion. The lake was open to the public in 1949 and attracts more than 100,000 visitors a year. (Julie Hunt, swissinfo.ch 8.09.09)
