00:01Controversy surrounds the Our Ocean conference, which kicked off Tuesday in Kenya.
00:05Several Taiwanese marine experts traveling to the conference were held for more than 24 hours,
00:09and some had their phones and passports confiscated.
00:12In the end, none of them made it to the event.
00:14Taiwan's government is calling foul.
00:29Taiwan has sent delegates to the conference every year since 2015.
00:33In a timeline originally provided by Taiwan's Ocean Affairs Council,
00:37the country's delegation originally registered in April, but then faced technical issues.
00:41Taiwan was removed from the conference's registration options,
00:44then users with Taiwan-based IP address who cannot complete their registration.
00:48After two scholars arrived and were detained,
00:50the remainder of the delegation canceled their plans.
01:16Taiwan's foreign ministry accused China of pressuring the Kenyan government to block the delegates from attending,
01:21and of violating international norms.
01:35It's said Kenya has, quote, willingly become a political tool of China.
01:40The ministry called on fellow democracies and friendly countries to join Taiwan in protesting.
01:44If China were responsible for the scholars' treatment,
01:47this is only the latest example of Beijing seeking to limit Taiwan's international participation,
01:51following an incident last month when a Taiwanese delegation was prevented from attending the RightsCon forum in Zambia.
