00:43I'll see you next time.
00:50Hi, my name is Mike Parker.
00:53I'm the director of Muay Thai, or Thai boxing, in the state of Oklahoma.
00:57My instructor, Arjun Chai Sirisut, is the president of the Thai Boxing Association of the United States of America.
01:03I'm also a full instructor in the Filipino arts and Jeet Kune Do concepts under guru Dan Inosano of the
01:09Inosano Academy in California.
01:11I've had success in the ring. I've had success on the mat.
01:15I also train fighters in the ring for cage and for grappling tournaments.
01:21We're starting a series of five DVDs of Muay Thai in MMA.
01:26The first one today will cover basic boxing, footwork, combinations, counters.
01:31So let's get training.
01:45Welcome to Boxing Basics.
01:47The first thing we need to learn to do is to wrap our hands.
01:49When you punch heavy objects like heavy bags, when you spar and hit hard objects,
01:53you need to make sure that your hands are wrapped correctly.
01:56Boxers wrap their hands to protect their hands.
01:59They put on gloves to protect their hands, not to protect their opponent's face.
02:03You can fight without a face, but you cannot fight when your hands are hurt.
02:09I'll wrap my right hand first.
02:13Attaching the thumb with the crease down.
02:17Go around the wrist twice.
02:19You start with the wrist first.
02:22Then go up to the large knuckles.
02:25As you cross over the knuckles, go halfway down to the next knuckle.
02:33Go back around and come under the thumb.
02:36And start going through your fingers, starting with the small finger first.
02:40Go back under.
02:41Go through the next finger.
02:43Back under your thumb again.
02:45Go through the next finger.
02:47Make sure you keep the wrap as flat as you can through the whole process.
02:51If it bunches up, it'll cause your hand not to be able to close good.
02:55Also, when you're wrapping, keep your fingers apart.
02:59If you keep them tight, then the wrap will be too tight when you finish.
03:02Keep them open.
03:03And once in a while, as you're wrapping, make your hand go in and out and clench your fist.
03:08That way you know if it's tight or not.
03:10When you wrap your hands, wrap it snug.
03:13Don't be too tight.
03:15I've had the experience of wrapping too tight during a boxing competition and my hand was
03:20numb and hurting by the time I got through the first round.
03:22So, make sure you don't wrap it too tight.
03:25Go through the next finger.
03:27Go back around the thumb.
03:29Now, you need to reinforce these fingers that you just wrapped.
03:33So, go across the hand.
03:36Now, go behind the large knuckles.
03:38Don't go in front.
03:40Go behind.
03:42That reinforces those first knuckles that you wrapped up.
03:45Then, go back around and you need to reinforce the thumb.
03:48Go around the thumb once.
03:50Right behind this first knuckle on the thumb.
03:54Go back around the wrist and around the thumb one more time.
03:59I can't tell you how many times I've jammed my thumbs.
04:02Wrapping a thumb in your fist is really, really important to protect your hands.
04:08Wrap back around the wrist.
04:10Now, come through the web of your hand and that will bring your fingers and your thumb all
04:14together.
04:15Go through the web of your hand and then finish it up wrapping around the wrist.
04:26It should be snug as you should be able to make a good hard fist, bringing all your thumbs
04:31and fists and fingers together.
04:33It shouldn't be loose at all.
04:35You shouldn't be able to move it around on your hand, almost like a cast, like a plastic
04:41cast.
04:41Make it good and tight.
04:43Okay, now we'll do the wrap to second hand.
04:46Same process.
04:51With the seam down, go across your wrist twice.
04:58Then start going up toward your large knuckles of your hand and go halfway down between the
05:06large knuckle and the next one on your finger.
05:10This will start wrapping your fingers.
05:13As you come behind your thumb, come up to the little finger.
05:20Then keep going through your other fingers.
05:25Making sure that it's not too tight or too loose.
05:27Just snug.
05:30Now through the last finger.
05:33Now you need to reinforce the fingers that you just wrapped.
05:37So back around.
05:40And this time go above your knuckles.
05:47Then go back under.
05:48We need to wrap the thumb once.
05:50Go back under.
05:52Wrap the thumb again.
05:56Making sure it's not too tight.
05:57Make sure you can make a good, tight fist.
06:02Go back under one more time and go through the web of your hand.
06:07And then finish with wrapping your wrist.
06:17It should feel snug and tight.
06:19Both hands.
06:19Both hands can make a good, solid fist.
06:22And then you're ready to go.
06:23So that's it for hand wraps.
06:25Now we're going to start with some basic boxing fundamentals.
06:40Okay, welcome back to Boxing Basics.
06:43First things first, you have to know how to stand.
06:45You have to have correct mechanics and structure as you're moving.
06:49A boxing stance, make sure that you're not on a tight rope with your feet.
06:56Make sure your feet aren't aligned because you're too off balance.
07:00As if there was a line going between your feet,
07:04that's how far your feet should be apart.
07:05About shoulder width.
07:06A little bit more than shoulder width.
07:08Your knees bent.
07:10Your rear heel above.
07:14So it's pushing up off the ground.
07:16Because you want to use it as a spring.
07:19Your hands.
07:22Your left hand should be here at your cheekbones.
07:24In fact, this is a good way to get it to where you can know where your hands are supposed
07:29to be.
07:29If you take your thumbs and put them on your cheekbones and just make a fist.
07:33And that's where your hands should be.
07:36I know you've seen some boxers.
07:37They'll hold the hand down here.
07:39They'll hold it up here.
07:40They'll hold them tight in like this.
07:42Everybody has their own way of doing it.
07:44But you have to learn a basic structure first
07:46before you can start ad-libbing and freelancing your own style.
07:50So hands in front.
07:52Your left shoulder should be up a little bit.
07:55Not down like this.
07:57You shouldn't be too relaxed.
07:58Tense.
07:59Like a spring.
08:01Also notice,
08:02I'm crouched a little bit.
08:03I'm not standing straight up.
08:06It doesn't look like I want to fight like this.
08:09It looks like I want to fight like this.
08:11Animals are that way.
08:12When they get ready to fight,
08:13they crouch.
08:14And they're ready to spring.
08:16Think of that when you're in your boxing stance.
08:18You're a spring getting ready to unload.
08:21Be relaxed.
08:23Springiness.
08:25Feet not too close together.
08:27Hands not too close together.
08:29Not too far apart.
08:30Right in front.
08:32And this left hand.
08:34Imagine it is a tank turret.
08:38So whenever you move,
08:39it stays in the same spot.
08:43And it's always right in front of you.
08:47I'm going to bring in a couple of my students
08:49and we're going to do a drill
08:50that will kind of help footwork.
08:52Chelsea and Terry.
08:54Just get in a boxing stance here.
08:57And I'm going to say forward.
08:59They're going to move forward three steps.
09:01I'm going to say backwards.
09:02They're going to move backward,
09:03left, and right.
09:05Notice how their feet move.
09:07Notice how they keep their hands in the same position.
09:09And there's springiness on their legs.
09:12Okay, ready?
09:13Forward.
09:15Backward.
09:18Left.
09:21Right.
09:23Forward.
09:26Backward.
09:28Left.
09:30Right.
09:33Now I can tell randomly.
09:35I can do it however I want to do it
09:36just to mix them up
09:37so they don't think about just forward, backward,
09:40left, and right.
09:41So here we go.
09:42Forward.
09:43Forward.
09:45Backward.
09:46Forward.
09:47Left.
09:49Right.
09:50Backward.
09:52Forward.
09:53Okay.
09:54Now you can circle right.
09:55Circle to your right.
09:58Circle to your left.
10:00Circle to your right.
10:03Circle to your left.
10:05Forward.
10:07Backward.
10:08Backward.
10:10Right.
10:11That's good.
10:13Okay, now I'm just going to tell them to go
10:15and they're just going to randomly move around on their feet.
10:18Notice how they keep their feet apart.
10:20At no time are their feet together like this.
10:23You're off balance.
10:24You can't attack.
10:25You can't defend very well with your feet together like that.
10:28They have to stay apart.
10:30Okay, ready guys?
10:31Go.
10:33Any direction you want to move.
10:36Notice their chin is down.
10:38Their left shoulder is up.
10:40Both of their hands are up.
10:43Their feet are apart the whole time.
10:55Excellent.
10:56Thanks.
10:58That's the basics of footwork.
11:01Make sure you practice that all the time.
11:17When you're in a right lead
11:20with your right foot and right hand forward
11:22as opposed to a left lead like we just did,
11:26the right lead is the same exact movement
11:28and structure as the left lead.
11:31You're only...
11:32The right hand and the right foot's forward.
11:34That's the only difference.
11:35You move forward the same way.
11:36You move backward the same way.
11:38You move left, you move right
11:40the same exact way as you do with your left lead.
11:43Okay, now I'm going to have my students come up
11:45and we're going to footwork with the right lead.
11:55This time their right hand is up front
11:56and their right foot is up front.
11:58A right lead.
11:59A person who's left-handed,
12:01this is how they're going to stand
12:02because their power hand is their left hand.
12:04That's why it's in the rear.
12:06A right-handed person will stand
12:08with their left in front
12:09because their power hand is in the back.
12:11So it's just the opposite.
12:14Okay, we're going to go forward.
12:16Go.
12:18Backward.
12:21Left.
12:23Right.
12:25Notice how they keep their feet apart.
12:27The same as the other lead.
12:28It's exactly the same, just a mirror image.
12:31Forward.
12:33Backward.
12:35Left.
12:37Right.
12:38Good.
12:39Circle right.
12:41Circle left.
12:43That's it.
12:44Now just freelance it.
12:46Do whatever you want to do.
13:01Okay, that's very good.
13:03Now I want to point something out.
13:06Most boxing camps you go to,
13:09they will have most people right-handed.
13:12So most people are going to lead
13:14with their left hand
13:16and they're going to cross
13:17with their right hand.
13:18But you have left-handed people.
13:20So they also train it
13:21with the southpaw
13:23or the left-hand cross.
13:27To avoid confusion,
13:29I think a person should be able
13:31to learn both sides
13:33because you're not always going to be able
13:35to come back to your favorite spot.
13:38Especially in a street altercation,
13:40you're not going to be able
13:41to go back to your favorite stance
13:43because a lot of times
13:45in street confrontations,
13:47this person is here
13:49and his buddy's over here.
13:51Well, if this person attacks me first,
13:53I don't have time
13:54to switch into my favorite stance.
13:56I've got to be able to go
13:57with this stance,
13:58which is a right lead.
14:00Or if this person goes first,
14:01I've got to go left lead.
14:02So you've got to be able to go
14:04with the left lead
14:05or the right lead.
14:07It just makes sense.
14:09If you only go with one side,
14:12you are limiting your arsenal.
14:14If you can jab cross with this side
14:16and jab cross with the other side,
14:19that's four things you have then.
14:21It makes you much more mobile
14:23and you can adapt better
14:24when you can use both sides.
14:27Everybody has their strong side
14:28and you're going to go back
14:29to that side as often
14:31as will allow.
14:32But you should be able to adapt
14:34to the other side.
14:35So you should practice
14:36your footwork in the left lead
14:38and practice it in the right lead.
14:41And that's it for footwork.
14:55Okay, welcome back.
14:56We've got our basic stance,
14:58so we're going to learn
14:58some punching now.
15:00The first punch I want you to learn
15:01is the lead jab.
15:03A right-handed person
15:04is going to lead
15:05or jab with his left hand.
15:09Most people
15:09that don't know how to box,
15:11they think punching is from the arm.
15:13It isn't.
15:14Punches start from the foot
15:16and then it transfers to the hip,
15:18to your upper body,
15:19then it comes out the arm,
15:20much like a whip.
15:21As you start the jab,
15:24pivot small on your left foot
15:26and that turns the hip.
15:28As that turns the hip,
15:29then it turns the shoulder
15:30and your jab comes straight out.
15:33Just like that.
15:35Notice the turning of the hip
15:36and the shoulder.
15:39Also, notice that my chin
15:41is behind this shoulder.
15:43That keeps me from being hit
15:45as I'm jabbing.
15:47And as I jab,
15:48I'm covering over
15:49on the other side
15:50to keep from getting hit
15:51on this side.
15:52Whenever you attack someone,
15:53you leave yourself open
15:54to getting countered.
15:55So you need to be
15:56as safe as possible.
15:58Two ways to do that
15:59is to make sure your chin
16:00is behind this shoulder
16:01and you're covered
16:02on this other side.
16:04I'm just going to demonstrate
16:05a jab a little bit quick
16:07and then I'm going to bring
16:08a student in
16:09so I can hit something.
16:14Also, notice I step forward.
16:17That makes my body weight
16:19hit with more power.
16:23Shoulder up.
16:25Covering good.
16:38Okay, now I'm going to bring
16:42my student in
16:46and as he holds up the mitt,
16:48I'm going to jab it.
16:49Ready?
16:52Notice I move in
16:54and I hit it with my shoulder,
16:56not just my arm.
16:58I'm rotating that shoulder
17:01and I'm coming out.
17:03In.
17:07Cover with this hand.
17:08Make sure you cover all the time
17:09when you hit with the other hand.
17:12Come this way.
17:25Okay, good.
17:27That's the demonstration
17:27of the jab.
17:41The next punch we're going
17:42to examine
17:42is called the right cross.
17:45Cross because
17:46I'm also going across my body
17:49and when the person
17:51throws his punch,
17:52I go across his arm.
17:54Notice when I throw my cross,
17:57this shoulder is up
17:58and my chin is down.
18:00Also, that I'm covering
18:01on this side with this hand
18:03on this
18:03because you want to be safe
18:05when you hit.
18:07This punch is the same
18:08as the other punch.
18:09It starts down low
18:10from the foot.
18:11You pivot,
18:11turn the hip,
18:13turn the shoulder,
18:14and the punch comes out.
18:20Pivot,
18:21hip,
18:22shoulder.
18:23Like a whip.
18:35If you step forward
18:37with the left foot,
18:38your body weight,
18:41more power
18:42that makes your body weight hit.
18:52let your arm relax
18:54when you throw it.
18:56Don't stick it out there
18:57and then bring it back
18:59by itself
19:00or don't pull it back.
19:02Let it naturally spring back
19:03like a rubber band.
19:05Your muscles are made
19:06to come back
19:07like that.
19:09So, just let it come
19:10right back to you.
19:23Okay, now my student,
19:25I'm going to hit the mitt.
19:27Same thing.
19:29Step forward with the left foot.
19:31Pivot.
19:32Turn your hip.
19:34Turn your shoulder.
19:35a straight punch.
19:43Make sure you're covered
19:44on this side.
19:46Make sure the shoulder is up
19:46and your chin is down.
19:48Don't punch your chin up
19:49like this.
19:50Chin down.
20:04And that's the right cross.
20:20Alright, we've looked at the jab.
20:21We've looked at the right cross.
20:23Now, let's take a look
20:24at the lead hook.
20:25The hook
20:27is arguably
20:27the hardest punch in boxing.
20:29It's also the hardest to learn
20:30because of the body mechanics.
20:33When you throw the hook
20:35from a basic boxing stance,
20:37your hands are up,
20:38your chin is down.
20:39As you throw the hook,
20:41notice how my
20:43weight is on my back leg now
20:45as opposed to my front leg
20:47when I throw my cross
20:48or my front leg
20:49when I throw my jab.
20:50When I throw my hook,
20:51I'm on the back leg.
20:53That transfer of body weight
20:55is like I'm dragging
20:57a big heavy weight
20:59like this.
21:00And that's what
21:01when my boxing coaches,
21:02they always told me
21:03when you throw the hook,
21:04drag the hook.
21:05That's how I really learned
21:06to hook hard
21:06by thinking about dragging it.
21:08So if you think about
21:09pulling a heavy weight
21:10and dragging it,
21:11your weight's on this back leg.
21:14As you throw the hook,
21:16your weight comes back,
21:17you pivot on your front foot,
21:19your knee comes in.
21:21Imagine like there's
21:22like a little guy
21:23standing right here
21:24and you're going to
21:24just knee him
21:24in the head like that
21:26and twist.
21:27As the hip turns around,
21:28your shoulder
21:29precedes your hand
21:31before your hand starts moving
21:33and then your hand
21:34follows it.
21:35Notice
21:36that it's like
21:37a whipping motion.
21:39One, two, three.
21:40See it?
21:40It starts with the foot,
21:42hip, shoulder,
21:44hand comes around.
21:48Now,
21:49a lot of coaches
21:50and a lot of people
21:51I see when they hook,
21:52they hook like this.
21:55In my opinion,
21:57that's not a natural motion.
21:59Think about
22:00if you slapped someone,
22:01what would it look like?
22:02It would look like that.
22:04Just a simple slap.
22:05That's a natural motion.
22:08So just make a fist
22:09on the end of it.
22:11The same thing.
22:12When you raise this elbow up,
22:14it telegraphs the punch.
22:16I'm not telegraphing it now.
22:18And I just hit.
22:19It's much faster
22:21and it swings much harder
22:23than when you lift
22:24your arm up like this.
22:26So on the hook punch,
22:28put your weight
22:29on your back foot.
22:31Pivot.
22:32Turn your hip.
22:33Turn your shoulder
22:34and a whipping,
22:36slapping motion.
22:38Pum.
22:39Pum.
22:41Pum.
22:43Pum.
22:45Pum.
22:46On occasion,
22:47you can precede the hook
22:48with cocking it
22:49a little bit
22:50and then coming back
22:51a little bit.
22:52Pum.
22:53Make it a little bit harder.
22:55Pum.
22:57Pum.
22:58Also notice when I hook,
23:00I'm covered with this hand
23:01and my chin is down
23:02behind this shoulder.
23:05Pum.
23:06Pum.
23:08Pum.
23:10Notice I come back
23:11on the back leg
23:11when I hook.
23:12I'm not on my front leg
23:13when I hook like this.
23:15I'm on my back leg.
23:19Pum.
23:21Pum.
23:22Pum.
23:23Loose.
23:24Pum.
23:25And easy.
23:26Pum.
23:27Pum.
23:28Pum.
23:28Pum.
23:29And that's a look
23:30at the hook.
23:31Pum.
23:36Pum.
23:45all right we've looked at a couple punches we've looked at the lead jab the
23:49right cross the lead hook now we're going to take a look at the uppercuts
23:53the left uppercut and the right uppercut to begin the left uppercut take your
24:00right shoulder bend over at the waist but not over straight been like it this
24:07side of the X like this X right here in my chest just bend over the X so this
24:12shoulder is bending over the left leg and from there use your foot to power your
24:19hip up as your hip comes up it transfers your shoulder and then your hand comes
24:24up for the uppercut so it's a spring just like the other punches it all starts from
24:29the ground from your foot from your hip transfers to the shoulder then up to
24:33your up to your hand right shoulder over hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm notice that I'm
24:49covered and I'm not bringing this hand down here because I'm wide open on this
24:54side keep your hands covered now uppercut soon and launch it from the foot from
25:02your legs from your hip soon come up with it soon bring your entire body weight up
25:08through it soon soon soon that's the left uppercut the right uppercut is exactly the
25:19same dip your left shoulder over the right leg same thing drive off the leg extend the
25:27hip shoulder hmm right uppercut soon soon soon now we'll go back and forth left uppercut
25:47soon soon soon soon soon soon soon notice I'm breathing out soon soon every time you
26:01punch you're breathing out don't hold your breath when you punch because you get
26:06the wind knocked out of you breathe out that expends your energy and it tightens up
26:11all of your organs and your rib cage your stomach muscles it tightens everything
26:15up when you hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm when you breathe out hmm uppercuts one more time left
26:25uppercut soon right uppercut soon soon soon soon and that's the uppercut
26:49all right so we've gone through some punches the left lead or the jab the right cross the lead hook
26:59the left uppercut the right uppercut now we're going to do the right overhand the right overhand
27:05is a perfect follow-up to the left uppercut with the right overhand to do a correct overhand as you
27:14come up with the uppercut on the left side with the right hand come straight over bang just like that
27:24don't shoot it straight down it's more like a whipping motion like that hmm see it hmm overhand
27:34like this it's coming over the top of the person's arm over the top of his shoulder and you're going
27:41down an overhand so we'll do the overhand from the uppercut overhand notice as I throw the
27:50uppercut overhand down pivoting my hip I'm turning my shoulder and it's coming through uppercut overhand
28:05yeah yes notice I'm covered on this side and the shoulders up my chin is down uppercut soon overhand
28:14uppercut soon overhand lift him up soon hammer him down lift him up hammer him down soon soon soon and
28:31that's the right overhand okay so we've taken care of some punches to the high line or to the head
28:48now
28:49let's look at punching the body two punches to the body that work really well are hooks because a lot
28:55of times when you're moving underneath punches that's the good time to hit the body because you're coming
29:00in in the range of the body so when you throw a left hook to the body you're crouching down
29:08and your left hook
29:09comes the same as it does from the high one only you come low soon to the body so just
29:16go low bend over at the
29:17waist bend your knees stay covered hook to the body soon hook to the body soon hook to the body
29:25soon soon
29:30soon soon soon soon soon soon soon soon right hook to the body don't reach down like this because you
29:57leave too much open over here bend your legs get down toward the body more soon and then hit the
30:04body
30:04then come back up so you're safe coming up and coming down soon soon if I go left soon and
30:13I come up now
30:14right again soon so I'm going up and down soon soon soon soon if I go double soon soon I
30:25stay low
30:25mm-hmm all right I'm gonna bring in a student so I can hit his belly pad so you can
30:33see my motion soon soon
30:40notice I'm not doing this hmm it leaves me open too much go lower soon soon soon right hook same
30:54thing go low
30:55soon soon soon soon soon soon soon double soon soon soon soon soon soon and that's the hook to the
31:09body
31:23now that we've looked at some basic punches by themselves let's put some together in some combinations
31:29these are introduction of combinations we'll do more elaborate ones on DVD number five the first
31:37combination I want to do is a jab and right cross and a left hook notice how one punch sets
31:47up the
31:47other one when I'm jabbing my right one is cocked that's the next one coming up notice when I cross
31:53they're just setting up the hook and I'm coming back with the hook jab cross hook jab cross hook
32:08each time I punch punch punch my chin down the hand is up I'm going to bring my student in
32:29I'm going to hit
32:29the mitts with the same combination jab cross hook right left jab right cross
32:37left hook be loose with your punches don't try to strengthen them
32:48punching isn't about strength punching is about looseness in your shoulders and
32:53in your hips and that's a look at jab cross hook
33:23all right let's look at another simple three punch combination this one will be
33:29a left jab right cross left uppercut jab cross uppercut I'm gonna bring my two
33:37students in to demonstrate this Chelsea's gonna punch jab cross and left uppercut
33:44ready go notice how when she throws her cross how her shoulder bends over her
33:59leg to load up on the uppercut notice how she keeps both hands up when she hits she
34:09breathes out each time that's good excellent and that's jab cross uppercut
34:35okay our next combination is going to be a right overhand a left uppercut and a
34:41right overhand this is an excellent combination for people who are short or
34:46people who have short arms because they can't use their long punches like their
34:50cross and their jab so they have to get on the inside and use uppercuts and
34:54overhands and hooks so this combination right overhand
35:00hmm left uppercut hmm right overhand notice that I'm going on the same line and
35:07returning on the same line
35:10zoom zoom zoom zoom zoom zoom zoom zoom zoom zoom zoom zoom zoom zoom zoom zoom I'm gonna bring my
35:24students out to
35:25demonstrate hitting the mitts okay ready go around more both hands up chin down
35:48behind the shoulder using your legs to propel your body hit with your body weight
36:00good that's excellent that is the right overhand left uppercut right overhand
36:19all right welcome back more combinations we've looked at some combinations using both hands now
36:25we're going to look at the concept of using one hand multiple punches obviously if I can do one jab
36:32I can do two
36:33jabs or if I do one hook I can do two hooks with the same hand if I throw a
36:40right cross
36:41obviously I can do one two right crosses so we're going to look at some combinations
36:46using the same hand we'll use the left hand first the first one I want to do is a jab
36:51and left hook
36:55lead jab left hook notice I'm not staying here and hooking because remember on the hook to have a good
37:03power and
37:03good mechanics you've got to be in the back so after you jab come back cock it back
37:08then throw a hook
37:15jab hook on the left hand I can do the same thing on the right hand I can do a
37:21right cross
37:22right hook same thing right cross
37:27right hook it can be a right hook to the head or it can be a right hook to the
37:33body so I'll do those two
37:36right cross hook high right cross hook low
37:52the next one if I jab I can also uppercut with the same hand so this one jab left uppercut
38:00left jab left uppercut
38:03right hook right hook right hook right hook right hook right hook right hook
38:21right hook cross uppercut right hook and this is a look at doing combinations
38:33with one hand or the other.
38:48Okay now in this section we're going to work on defenses. If you have a good
38:53offense you've got to be able to protect yourself too. So we'll go over some
38:56defenses covering evasion, deflecting, and blocking. When someone for instance throws
39:06a punch at you four things are going to happen. You're either not going to be there
39:11or you're going to deflect it or parry it or you're going to block it.
39:17If you can't do one of those three things you're probably going to get hit.
39:21It doesn't matter if the person punches or he kicks or a single leg or double leg tackle.
39:28You can either not be there. You can deflect him off. You can block him or he's going to get
39:36you.
39:37So the first thing we're going to work on is evading. The first thing I want
39:43evade backwards. Just move back. Retreat. Simple. Somebody throws a punch throws a kick
39:50tries to shoot. Just back up. Now it's important not to continue backing up like this. Once you retreat
40:00and he misses circle off the line. Either circle off to the right or circle off to the left after
40:08you
40:08retreat. If you continually retreat he's going to catch you. There's no way you're going to go
40:14backwards as fast as he's going forward. So as soon as you retreat get off the line.
40:21Retreat get off the line. Another way of retreating is just moving your upper body backwards. It's called
40:27snap back. If he throws a punch snap back. Kick snap back out of the way. Obviously if he shoots
40:34for a
40:35tackle you can't snap back. You've got to move your legs and get off the line. So the first two
40:42of defenses move backward and retreat. After you move back get off the line. That's number one. Number two
40:53snap back. When he throws a punch snap back. I'm going to use my student to demonstrate a little bit
41:00more clearly. He's going to do number one. He's just going to back off and circle. Get off the line.
41:09right or left. After he retreats.
41:31Okay. Now he's going to snap back. He doesn't move his feet. He just moves his upper body. See it?
41:56That's retreating two ways. Now the next one we're going to do is deflecting. We can keep our student up
42:05here. When you deflect you're not blocking the brunt of his blow. For instance if he throws a jab.
42:12I'm not going to block the brunt of it. I'm going to deflect it off the line. When I deflect
42:17it we'll
42:18call it a parry. With this right hand parry this jab. When he jabs parry it. All you're doing is
42:26like a
42:26cat. You're just playing with it. Just a simple deflection and parry. Don't push it all the way off.
42:34Just deflect it. He throws it hard and fast. Just deflect it. Because I'm not using any strength at
42:40all to try to push this thing away. Because see how it leaves me open. If I push it away.
42:46He's just going to
42:47nail me with the other hand. So when you parry or deflect a punch. Just play with it. Now he's
42:55going to really try to hit me. All right. I'm just deflecting with his hand. I can deflect his cross
43:08the
43:08same way. Just deflect it. So he's going to jab cross. Deflect, deflect. The other way I can do it
43:19is with my forearms. Deflect, deflect with the forearms. Notice I'm coming in also. I'm deflecting his
43:31punches and I'm smothering them. But I'm not blocking the brunt of them. I'm not sticking them up and
43:37blocking here. I'm deflecting them offline. Because I may want to grapple with him. I may want to knee him.
43:49So the two deflections. Parry or deflect with the forearms. As you come in.
44:13That's deflection with the hands and the forearms. The next thing I'm going to do is block. As he throws
44:19a punch. I'm just going to block. Just both arms.
44:31Cross.
44:38We also call this a peekaboo. Because I'm going here. I'm looking around it. But he can't penetrate this block.
44:45Another way to block is the horizontal your arms. Cross.
44:55So we got block, vertical, block, horizontal. And I'm taking the brunt of his blow.
45:02Either hand now.
45:14Okay now. I'm going to put those three together. I'm going to parry. Or I'm going to use my forearms
45:19to deflect. Or I'm going to block. Because I can't do everything with one thing. Because the timing isn't
45:27right. You've got to be able to have multiple ways of defending yourself. Or multiple ways of
45:32dealing with his punches. Because one way won't work for all the time. So go.
45:39Parry. Block.
45:42Forearm. Block.
45:44Parry. Block.
46:03Okay. Good.
46:04Good. Now, another defensive movement is called the bob. When you bob, you drop your right shoulder
46:14over the opposite leg. Don't bend your knees up and down like this. Bend at the waist. Make your
46:23shoulders perpendicular to the other leg. This is called a bob.
46:30And Terry. As I punch, he's going to bob to the left. Bob to the right. I'm going to start
46:36with my
46:36left jab first. He bobs. Bobs. So he can go either way if I throw the left jab.
46:45And notice, he's coming back up to the center each time. If he goes back and forth like this,
46:52it's easy for me to catch him. Watch. He'll just go back and forth. It's easy for me to catch
46:58him.
46:59But if he goes back to the center each time, it's like he's playing peek-a-boo with me.
47:12And that's the bob. Now, if you combine that with the weave, then that's called a bob and weave.
47:17As he bobs, he weaves underneath and comes back up. That sets him up for a counter punch. It also,
47:25as he bobs and weaves, he's going to hit the body. That's a good time to hit the body. So
47:31he's going
47:31to bob and weave. Don't punch. If I cross, he bobs and weaves the other way.
47:45The right shoulder. That's it. So you can bob and weave to the right or bob and weave to the
47:53left.
48:00Okay. The other evading thing I want you to learn, come here Terry, is slipping. This one is just side
48:11to side.
48:13There's no up and down motion. You just side to side.
48:21He could do it with my left hand or my right cross. It doesn't really matter.
48:27He goes either hand.
48:30Hash, hash, hash, hash.
48:35Okay. That's evading.
48:37Now, we're going to put those together with the blocks, with the parries, with the forearm deflections.
49:10Good.
49:11Good.
49:11Good. So now you have a basic idea of evading, blocking, deflecting. Put those together.
49:20When you spar, just make them work for you.
49:34Okay. We've looked at some basic defenses. Now let's look at some counters.
49:39Counter punching is punching at the same time as the other person punches you, only you're evading
49:46and hitting him at the same time. It's probably the most difficult thing to learn in boxing,
49:52but it's probably the most effective. If you can learn to counter punch, you'll be very good.
49:57Terry, let me use you again.
50:01We're going to counter the left jab. When I throw my left jab, he's going to counter.
50:05The first thing I want him to use is when he parries, he's going to jab at the same time.
50:10As I jab, he parries and he jabs me in the face at the same time.
50:23Also notice, when I start my attack, that's when he starts his counter. He moves in at the same
50:29time and he catches me before my hand lands. He beats me to the punch. That's what countering is.
50:40Now, he's going to counter again my jab, except this time he's going to counter with this one low.
50:48Instead of going high to my face, he's going to parry the jab and going to hit my body.
51:02Notice he's parrying. He's not pushing it over. He's not using strength to block it away.
51:07He's just deflecting it. At the same time, he's bobbing this shoulder and he's jabbing to the body.
51:22That's why you have to learn to parry correctly because he doesn't know when I'm going to punch,
51:27so that thing has to be up there so he can time his counter.
51:34Okay, one more counter to the jab.
51:38As I jab, he's going to bob his right shoulder down and hit my body with the right cross.
52:00Again, his bread and butter defense has to be the parry because he doesn't know
52:05when I'm going to punch so he can't hit my body every time. He's got to counter it and time
52:10it just right.
52:18And that's the counter to the jab.
52:33Okay, back to defenses and counters. We countered the left jab.
52:37Now we're going to do some counters to the right cross. Terry, can I use you again?
52:41The first one, when I throw my right cross,
52:44we call it a split entry. He'll parry with the left hand and my arm splits his arms and hits
52:51me high
52:52in the face. We'll call that a split entry because my arm is splitting both of his arms.
52:57So he's parrying on the outside and hitting on the inside. That's a counter to the right cross.
53:05Split high.
53:26Okay, another counter to the right cross.
53:28cross. If there's a split high, then there must be a split low. As I cross, he parries
53:35and then he hits the body. The same thing as the high one. He just hits low now. Split
53:41low, parry on the outside, hit the body. And notice, when he's parrying, he's not pushing
53:51it to the side. He's not pushing because then he can't cross. He's crossed his body up.
53:56He's just deflecting it with the parry as he hits at the same time. So we have split
54:09high and split low. All right, the next counter to the right cross is going to be a bob and
54:19weave. As I throw my right cross, he bobs his left shoulder, weaves underneath it. Keep
54:27the bob and weave tight because all he needs to move is just enough to make my fist miss.
54:38Now, as he bobs and weaves, look what's open. A body shot. We worked on the right hook to
54:44the body. So now he's going to hit me with a body hook as he bobs and weaves and comes
54:49up. As he comes up, he can add a left hook high. Bang. See it? Hook, hook.
55:13So the counter to the right cross. Split high. Split low. Bob and weave. Bob and weave with punches. Bang,
55:25bang.
55:25Bang. Okay, all three again. I throw my right cross. He splits high. The second one, he splits
55:32low. The third one, he bobs and weaves. And he can punch as a counter. Punch right to the
55:40body, high to the head. Right to the body, high to the head. All three again. Split high. Split
55:47low. Bob and weave with punches. Again. Split high. Split low. Bob and weave with punches.
55:58And that's it for counters for the jab, cross and hook. I want to point out that these are
56:05introduction to counters. There are many, many, many counters. These are very simple, easy to
56:10learn. And we'll elaborate more in a coming DVD.
