00:00:21Und O.G. Ananobi authortet ein Moment in Knicks Geschichte,
00:00:25never zu be forgotten.
00:00:27The Knicks, a win away.
00:00:29The Spurs in survival mode.
00:00:31It's Game 5.
00:00:45Back in San Antonio, Texas,
00:00:47where we played the first two games of the NBA Finals,
00:00:50and the Knicks won them both.
00:00:52And now it's Game 5.
00:00:54And there is no margin for error for the San Antonio Spurs,
00:00:58as you see a whole lot of Knicks jerseys.
00:00:59How about I say, are we at Madison Square Garden?
00:01:01Yeah, they have bought up a lot of tickets here at Frostbank Center.
00:01:07New York will be well represented for Game 5
00:01:10as they try to put a bow on this series and win it in five.
00:01:17We will see if they're able to pull that off here in San Antonio
00:01:22as we welcome you to NBA Tip-Off,
00:01:24presented by American Express.
00:01:27Hey, everybody, Ernie Johnson with Shaquille O'Neal,
00:01:29Kenny the Jet Smith, Charles Barkley.
00:01:31One of the highlights so far has been the arrival of Shaquille O'Neal today.
00:01:36Always fashionable.
00:01:38We love the suit.
00:01:39But when he comes through, it's a little bit of a little different look.
00:01:44Another pajama arrival for Shaq.
00:01:46Another pajama arrival.
00:01:48Hey, that's how you do it, baby.
00:01:51Who says that's how you do it?
00:01:53That's not how you come to work.
00:01:54It is.
00:01:55That's not how you come to work.
00:01:57But what if he's –
00:01:59Kenny, Kenny, Kenny.
00:02:00Okay, go ahead.
00:02:00We don't explain to people like him.
00:02:02That's how I come to work.
00:02:03Okay.
00:02:03Okay.
00:02:04I was just going to say he wasn't really coming straight from there.
00:02:08He was coming from somewhere else.
00:02:09See, okay, see, see.
00:02:11It's called the PJ for a reason.
00:02:13I didn't want to do it, but now y'all –
00:02:15It's called the PJ for a reason.
00:02:17I didn't want to do it, but now y'all made me do it.
00:02:18The reason why I come to work like that
00:02:20is because I don't want to mess up my Shaquille O'Neal big and tall suits
00:02:22only available to JCPenney.
00:02:25Jacques Panay, that French brand?
00:02:27You already know.
00:02:27But I'm telling you –
00:02:28Available at JCPenney in the big and tall section.
00:02:30I'm telling you right now, if some of the arrivals that we showed
00:02:33as we came on the air, if somebody had been in pajamas,
00:02:36you would have said you can't come to work like that.
00:02:37First of all –
00:02:38Yeah, that's right.
00:02:39First of all, I don't sleep in pajamas.
00:02:41Pajamas.
00:02:42Hey, listen, man.
00:02:43Yeah.
00:02:44Okay.
00:02:45We've taken it way too far.
00:02:46Anyway, as you know, we're with you here.
00:02:49Socks or ashy legs.
00:02:51We're with you here on ESPN for the next hour.
00:02:54Yes.
00:02:54And then what happens at the top of the hour?
00:02:56We go to ABC.
00:02:57Yes, we do.
00:02:58Home of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
00:03:00And then the – yes.
00:03:01And then the game five will start about a half hour after that.
00:03:04So next hour and a half, we're with you on ESPN and ABC.
00:03:08And as we have been doing, we want to review the previous game.
00:03:12Oh, there is a lot to review in game four at Madison Square Garden.
00:03:18Spurs scored 41 in the first quarter.
00:03:21Finals record 14 threes in the first half.
00:03:24Vassell and Dylan Harper, seven for seven combined.
00:03:28They shot 60% in the first half.
00:03:31Everything going in for San Antonio.
00:03:35Yeah, everything going in.
00:03:36And this young fellow, Dylan Harper, has shown that he's ready for stardom.
00:03:39But then all of a sudden, there was a couple things going on.
00:03:42And this flagrant foul could be big if this continues because Wimby would be suspended for a game.
00:03:48Well, it keyed a 13-0 run, which was aided by San Antonio shooting a lot of three-pointers
00:03:54and misfiring.
00:03:55Brunson connects there.
00:03:57And then both Dylan Harper and Devin Vassell, Chuck, will miss on this end.
00:04:01Yeah, I'll tell you what, man.
00:04:03The way the NBA is today, you just shoot a bunch of threes.
00:04:07And if they go in, it's great.
00:04:08If they don't, they didn't make any adjustments.
00:04:11And I blame that 100% on the players.
00:04:14Back on the other end, Ananobi connects this week.
00:04:17Hey, man, this guy's been amazing.
00:04:18And suddenly, they're down 19 from 29.
00:04:22Keldon Johnson on the other end.
00:04:23Another missed three.
00:04:24Okay, let's do it.
00:04:26You still shoot threes.
00:04:27Let's try De'Aaron Fox.
00:04:28Now, this was the biggest plays in the game, in my opinion.
00:04:32Oh, that's not the one that I'm talking about.
00:04:34I forget it.
00:04:34No, and on the other end, here's Josh Hart.
00:04:3713-0 run.
00:04:38Suddenly, the Knicks down 16.
00:04:40And you know what, fellas?
00:04:41We got ourselves a ballgame.
00:04:43Not normally you say, I'm down 16.
00:04:45What a move.
00:04:45Yeah, that was the only one from inside the arc they tried.
00:04:49It's the only one?
00:04:50Yes, and Dylan Harper connected.
00:04:52Oh, that's interesting.
00:04:53Still, they're in good shape.
00:04:55Look at Wembe here.
00:04:56They're up 20.
00:04:57It's 95-75 with 9.33.
00:05:01And then, oh, my goodness.
00:05:02The Knicks go 20-4.
00:05:04That's a shot clock violation.
00:05:05The happiest person in New York is Josh Hart.
00:05:08Yeah, we'll get to that.
00:05:10Kat over Keldon Johnson.
00:05:13That's a tough shot.
00:05:14Suddenly, they are down 12.
00:05:16It's 95-83.
00:05:18And one thing about the Knicks is you keep them right.
00:05:20Uh-oh, watch out.
00:05:20Oh, this is another one here.
00:05:21Oh, that's a tough pass.
00:05:23When you say tough, you mean terrible, right?
00:05:25And on the other end, Kat going right at Wembe.
00:05:28Oh, my goodness.
00:05:28And got fouled.
00:05:29What a man.
00:05:30I can't believe he didn't travel.
00:05:32Hey, it's a nine-point game.
00:05:3397-88.
00:05:34Jose Alvarado, quality minutes in the fourth quarter.
00:05:38Look at that move.
00:05:39Oh, yes.
00:05:40Look, Kat, shout-out to the misrested piece of great Curly Neal.
00:05:43That's what that would look like.
00:05:44Alvarado again this time for three.
00:05:46Shout-out to Mike Brown playing both of them cards.
00:05:48Hadn't played them together all year.
00:05:49No, all playoffs they had.
00:05:51104-100 the score.
00:05:53Then Brunson for three.
00:05:54104-103.
00:05:57And now here's your Josh Hart play, Chuck.
00:05:59Oh, my goodness.
00:06:00I'll tell you what.
00:06:01If Josh Hart had two bad plays down the stretch,
00:06:04if the Knicks had lost that game,
00:06:05he would have had a rough night.
00:06:07He would have felt bad.
00:06:09So it's still a one-point game.
00:06:11And then Brunson gives the Knicks their first lead of the night, 105-104.
00:06:16Stephon Castle hit a couple of free throws for a one-point lead.
00:06:19And then this.
00:06:22De'Aaron Fox, San Antonio up one, blocked by OG Ananobi.
00:06:27I can't figure out, was that backcourt on Alvarado?
00:06:30Yes, it was.
00:06:33Meantime, here it is.
00:06:35This was.
00:06:36Ananobi with the tip out of nowhere.
00:06:40And the Knicks have the lead by one.
00:06:43One more chance for San Antonio.
00:06:46Dylan Harper to inbound.
00:06:48Cat all over him.
00:06:49And Cat got a fingertip on it.
00:06:50Yeah, Cat got a finger on it, which was huge.
00:06:52Yes, indeed.
00:06:54Blew up that play.
00:06:57And the Garden absolutely exploded.
00:07:02As this comeback from the ages was complete.
00:07:06Final 21-27 of that game, 55-25.
00:07:10Six for 35.
00:07:11Yeah.
00:07:12Two for 15 from deep.
00:07:14Yeah.
00:07:15Those, that is not a recipe for holding on to a lead.
00:07:18That is for sure.
00:07:19And San Antonio, a game they certainly should have had, slips away.
00:07:25And New York takes a 3-1 lead in the series.
00:07:28Here's what they were saying after game four.
00:07:32I think whenever you win or lose a game that night, you're, I mean, you're going to think
00:07:37about it.
00:07:37Think about the things that you've done well or what you did wrong.
00:07:40And I've always told myself that when you wake up the next day, it's time to turn the
00:07:44page.
00:07:44You still have a lot of work to do.
00:07:45In that moment of absolute joy, we have to talk about the elephant in the room was we
00:07:51just didn't play well at all.
00:07:52There is also frustration that we even allowed ourselves to be in that kind of position,
00:07:56especially as much as the deficit was.
00:07:59There's no avoiding what's happened.
00:08:01All four games have been winnable games.
00:08:04There's no way it's going to be harder on ourselves and more accountable to ourselves
00:08:07than the people in that locker room and to each other.
00:08:09And that's what's helped us get to where we are.
00:08:12There will be no circumstance that will change that.
00:08:14Obviously, it's frustrating to be down, but we still have this belief because we've seen
00:08:18it.
00:08:18It's the games that we're losing, you know, have all been close games.
00:08:21So we still have that belief that we have a chance to win, but we're taking this one
00:08:25game at a time.
00:08:26We're not trying to fast forward.
00:08:27We're not trying to, you know, take the easy way out.
00:08:30We're looking at the game tomorrow, and that's the one game that we think about right now.
00:08:33There were a thousand ways we could have not lost that game.
00:08:36We've made almost every mistake we could have possibly done, and we've learned from them.
00:08:41So I'm counting on the fact that we're going to learn before this series is over and apply.
00:08:47You know, the night you said that the loss would either divide you or bring you together.
00:08:51Do you have a better sense of whether or not the group actually thinks they can pull this
00:08:55off?
00:08:55Yeah, absolutely.
00:08:56Yeah, everybody thinks, everybody knows we're going to do it.
00:09:02Well, in every game, they've had double-digit leads in the first half.
00:09:06In every game, they've had leads in the last two minutes of the game, but down three games
00:09:11to one.
00:09:11We have tapes to break down with those big plays late.
00:09:15But first, we want to go to Malika Andrews, who's standing by courtside.
00:09:19So, San Antonio, I think the question everybody's asking, Malika, is, okay, when you lose a game
00:09:26like that, how do you recover from it?
00:09:29What you got?
00:09:29Yeah, it's mental toughness, Ernie.
00:09:32That's the word that comes to mind or the phrase that comes to mind.
00:09:35It's kind of like when I saw Chuck on his walk this morning, and he was sweating all over
00:09:38the place, and we caught up.
00:09:40It's the mental toughness that you have to exude in those sorts of moments, right?
00:09:44You're right, you're right.
00:09:45You're exactly right.
00:09:47But when we were walking around this morning, guys, Chuck and I are on the Riverwalk,
00:09:52and I don't know about you, but I saw so many New York Knicks fans, right?
00:09:55And we're on the cusp of history, something that New York has not done in 53 years.
00:10:01And New York fans, according to Vivid Seats, they're selling out about 40% of the tickets
00:10:07in this building tonight.
00:10:08A security guard said earlier that he expects this to have some remnants of maybe even
00:10:13being a New York Knicks home kind of crowd.
00:10:16That's the type of vibe and building that I am expecting here tonight, and you can already
00:10:20see the fans filling in.
00:10:22But on San Antonio's side, to your point, Ernie, there's been 38 teams that have gone
00:10:26down 3-1, and only one has come back.
00:10:29And that team had LeBron James on it in 2016.
00:10:32And so the mentality has to be, take this one game at a time.
00:10:36That's what Victor Wembenyama is saying.
00:10:37That's what Victor Wembenyama, as the leader of this team, believes truly that they can
00:10:42do.
00:10:42But it starts with not making mistakes.
00:10:45And for me, what I'm watching is how the San Antonio team looks early.
00:10:49They've led by at least 10 in the first quarter of every single game this series.
00:10:54So this could easily be going the other way.
00:10:56And yet it's in the margins that they have been losing these games.
00:10:59So I'm very curious how they look early.
00:11:00One note here, we did have Luke Cornett.
00:11:04He was questionable going into this game with illness.
00:11:06He is available, according to head coach Mitch Johnson, to play in this all-important
00:11:12Game 5, guys.
00:11:13Malika, thank you very much for the information.
00:11:16And thanks for the image of Chuck taking his walk this morning, too.
00:11:20We appreciate that very much.
00:11:21Guys, let's take a look at those plays.
00:11:23We kind of took a big-picture look at those plays from Game 4.
00:11:27But let's start with the De'Aaron Fox situation when you're up by 1.
00:11:32And Fox on this collision course with OG and Anobi.
00:11:37Well, you know, here's the play here.
00:11:39But everybody knows, this is no secret, that the time is the enemy right now.
00:11:44So you're trying to run out the clock somewhat and get two extra seconds off the clock and
00:11:51put yourself at the free throw line because they will foul you.
00:11:54They have to foul you.
00:11:55And you trust that you can make the free throws.
00:11:59You don't say, I'm going to challenge someone.
00:12:00I think De'Aaron Fox even knows that.
00:12:02You know, it was something, it was a mishap.
00:12:04It was a brain.
00:12:07You went away.
00:12:09Your Wi-Fi went down for that moment.
00:12:12And I think he knows better than that.
00:12:15And it's unfortunate.
00:12:16But that wasn't the only play.
00:12:17But that was the biggest play in that moment.
00:12:20Yeah, and I said that, yeah, it was a bad play.
00:12:23But when you lose a 29-point lead, it takes more than that.
00:12:27And I want to say something, too, because I got a couple of NBA coaches called me and
00:12:31I want to be clear, crystal clear.
00:12:34So when I said it was really dumb basketball the other night, I was talking about the players.
00:12:40I want to make it clear that I wasn't talking about Coach Johnson.
00:12:44I think Coach Johnson is a really good young coach, got a really, really bright future.
00:12:49Number one, I want to support him because he's a black coach.
00:12:51We don't have many black head coaches in the NBA.
00:12:53So I want to make that crystal clear.
00:12:55But I just, like I say, when I said it was some players out there doing some dumb stuff.
00:12:59What do you mean by that?
00:13:00Not the coaches had anything to do with it, but just the players?
00:13:02Well, the coach, the coach, the only thing I think he could have did different was cause
00:13:05some timeouts, but he did not shoot that ball like Fox, and he didn't shoot them to go
00:13:14have them with a 25-point lead.
00:13:15He didn't draw up three, excuse me, nine three-point plays in a row.
00:13:20I just want to know, the players were doing dumb stuff, not the coach.
00:13:24The coach's job, to me, is to instill discipline, and his team had no discipline.
00:13:28He is a fabulous coach.
00:13:30They made dumb, but everybody.
00:13:31But I just want to make it clear that I was talking about the players.
00:13:34Right.
00:13:34Because, listen, I don't want to be criticizing young black coaches, because we need more
00:13:38young black coaches in the NBA.
00:13:40But there were some players out there doing dumb stuff, and I want to make that crystal
00:13:44clear.
00:13:44So if Coach Johnson took my comments personally, I want to apologize to him, but them players
00:13:50are doing some dumb stuff out there.
00:13:51All right.
00:13:51Let's move on to the next play, the OG Ananobi tip, the one that will live in infamy for
00:13:56the New York Knicks.
00:13:58And this, tell me how this played out for OG, not a body on him.
00:14:06Yes, because Brunson had two guys on him.
00:14:08So, you know, OG was the long guy right there.
00:14:10Look, look, Ernie.
00:14:11Clear lane.
00:14:12He had a clear lane right there.
00:14:14And listen, you just want to get your hands on the ball.
00:14:15That's exactly what he did.
00:14:17That's why this is the tip hurt around New York.
00:14:19Nobody touched him.
00:14:21He got his fingertip on him, and the ball rolled smooth in.
00:14:23And, Ernie, what I don't understand about this play is, why is Victor out there at half
00:14:28court?
00:14:29Well, he was guarding Brunson initially.
00:14:34Why the hell is he guarding Brunson?
00:14:35Because they wanted him to shoot over Victor, and then the double team came from Fox, who
00:14:41was guarding the ball.
00:14:42And I understand that, but first of all, if you actually look at that play, I thought
00:14:46the most dangerous guy...
00:14:47But we're switching everything.
00:14:48We're switching everything.
00:14:49But why?
00:14:50That is a normal thing, switch everything.
00:14:52He should...
00:14:54De'Aaron Fox had an OB.
00:14:55Yeah.
00:14:55De'Aaron Fox had an OB.
00:14:56He came over the double.
00:14:57Well, because he had to help him on Brunson.
00:14:59I'm saying, I thought the most dangerous guy on this play was going to be Carl Anthony Towns.
00:15:04Why is Carl Anthony Towns guarded by this young little man down here?
00:15:09There's no reason for that.
00:15:10Because I said to Draymond, I said, man, I'd watch Cat get an offensive rebound.
00:15:14I didn't even think about OG.
00:15:17Wimby is the tallest player on the court.
00:15:19He should have been under the basket in a rebound position.
00:15:23The only thing I disagree with that is...
00:15:24But that's not how they play, because they switch everything.
00:15:26Yeah, but he has to be down low.
00:15:28If you're going to switch...
00:15:29That's not how they play.
00:15:30It don't make any sense.
00:15:31That's not how they play.
00:15:32I would say this, Chuck.
00:15:33And this is no disrespect to anything that you are.
00:15:37But it's the same way when Stockton hit the three, when the Rockets.
00:15:42You've got to switch everything.
00:15:43And if you don't switch everything and you don't switch hard, Brunson's going to get
00:15:47a wide open three.
00:15:48So now I've got my best defender against their best offensive player.
00:15:53And you're going to give up offensive rebounds.
00:15:54But you've got to box out.
00:15:55There's no one boxed out.
00:15:58If Fox or someone else has to rotate...
00:16:01Well, Carl Anthony Towns is going to get the offensive rebound if you look at that play.
00:16:04I just think I'm going to have...
00:16:05First of all, we can all disagree, and I agree.
00:16:08Wimby should have been under the basket, in my opinion.
00:16:10Okay.
00:16:10Let's move on.
00:16:12The Carl Anthony Towns play on the inbounds.
00:16:15Because when you watch what was happening on the sidelines there, this is their last gasp.
00:16:20And he's even encouraging...
00:16:23He's even encouraging...
00:16:24Spike Lee.
00:16:25...fans nearby...
00:16:26Yeah, but he got his...
00:16:27But he got his hand...
00:16:29To get a little closer.
00:16:29But the biggest...
00:16:30Him getting his hand on this play saved the game.
00:16:33Maybe, maybe.
00:16:34Great defense, Ali B.
00:16:35I mean, we're not paying attention to...
00:16:37Listen, Harper is looking...
00:16:40That fingertip right there.
00:16:42The fingertip hurt around New York.
00:16:44Because Castle's wide open.
00:16:45He is open, but at the same time...
00:16:48And he still was open and just bobbled the basketball.
00:16:50Oh, yeah.
00:16:50Yeah, yeah.
00:16:51He bobbled the basketball.
00:16:52Yeah, but...
00:16:52Yeah, he bobbled, I think, because Cat got his finger on it.
00:16:55Oh, yeah.
00:16:55I mean, it just knocked it down.
00:16:57And he had gotten some room around Josh Hart.
00:17:00Because if he don't touch that ball, that's a layup, basically.
00:17:03You're right.
00:17:04That was the story in Game 4.
00:17:06And just a historic win for the New York Knicks.
00:17:10And now they have a chance tonight to end the regular season.
00:17:13I mean, to end the NBA season by winning the finals.
00:17:18They like pack rats, Ernie.
00:17:19They travel.
00:17:20You see John Turturro there with Spike?
00:17:23He's a real fan, him and Spike, though.
00:17:24John's going to join us later here.
00:17:26Is he really?
00:17:26In this show.
00:17:27Yes, as a matter of fact.
00:17:29That's Kenny's brother, Vince.
00:17:31Yes, the...
00:17:33It might be.
00:17:34I don't know.
00:17:35And, of course, the alien has some fans here, too.
00:17:37Jack Black announced.
00:17:38That's what that looked like, isn't it?
00:17:46Live from the NBA Finals,
00:17:47NBA Tip-Off is presented by the powerful backing of American Express.
00:17:53We're welcoming you back to NBA Tip-Off.
00:17:56Look, through the course of these playoffs,
00:17:58we have had the pleasure of learning some more history of the NBA
00:18:04from our old school correspondent, Scoop D'Agostino.
00:18:08Often what Scoop does is extol the virtues of these guys
00:18:12and things they've done in their career that deserve recognition.
00:18:16And then there are nights like this
00:18:18when he brings up something that one of our guys would rather not remember.
00:18:24That'd be you.
00:18:25Uh-oh.
00:18:25This is 1993.
00:18:29Mr. and Mrs. North and South America
00:18:31and all the ships at sea.
00:18:33Let's go to press.
00:18:35June 20, 1993.
00:18:38Chuckster, divert your eyes.
00:18:40League MVP Charles Barkley was in the first and only NBA Finals of his career
00:18:45and was up against the two-time defending champion Chicago Bulls in a game six.
00:18:50Now, if you've watched inside the NBA for more than a minute,
00:18:53you probably know Charles is not a member of the Champions Club.
00:18:57I guess you've got to be an NBA champion to even get in the place.
00:19:00I'll get somebody who can get you in.
00:19:02Hold on one second.
00:19:02Hold on.
00:19:03Hold on.
00:19:06And so, while you may know the way this story ends for Chuck and the Suns,
00:19:10how it ends may surprise you.
00:19:13Or it wasn't his heirness who took the heir out of Phoenix's sail,
00:19:16and it wasn't Scottie Pippen who gave the Suns a whippin'.
00:19:20Instead, the Bulls kept on passin' till it got to John Paxson.
00:19:27And thus, the Bulls had their first three-peat.
00:19:30Paxson, who had 35 points in the entire series,
00:19:34was now a three-time champion.
00:19:36Same is true for Will Perdue.
00:19:38And BJ's arms needed to be strong to carry his three rings.
00:19:42All these guys were in the club,
00:19:44but the big old bouncer denied entry to the now basketball announcer.
00:19:48Jean-Tobac is going nuts in here.
00:19:53Jackson, he said, don't let you in.
00:19:55With 62 wins in the regular season,
00:19:57it was the best chance at a title that the Chuckster got.
00:20:01But the unlikely hero ruined it with one final shot.
00:20:05As always, we're giving you the scoops on hoops right here
00:20:08on Great Moments in Playoff History.
00:20:13I was glad to see that you could chuckle to yourself through that.
00:20:18No pun intended.
00:20:19After more than 30 years.
00:20:21Is that 30 years ago?
00:20:22That was 1993.
00:20:24Damn, I'm old.
00:20:25You almost had it, though, Chuck.
00:20:27What were you whispering to Scottie Pippen in that one shot?
00:20:29Do you remember?
00:20:30I don't even remember, to be honest with you.
00:20:32Scottie was a really good player and a good person.
00:20:36But I don't even remember what I was saying.
00:20:37I was probably talking trash.
00:20:39I would imagine so.
00:20:41Yeah, I was talking a little trash.
00:20:42You know what's interesting?
00:20:43I've been hearing everyone say you have to go one game at a time.
00:20:48Yes.
00:20:49If I'm the San Antonio Spurs, I'm looking ahead.
00:20:53Because if I'm looking at one game,
00:20:55it becomes too much pressure in this game.
00:20:58I'm believing that we're in New York already.
00:21:00So I'm like, this is what we're doing.
00:21:02I'm not in this moment only.
00:21:04Because if I'm in this moment only,
00:21:06I might have too much pressure.
00:21:08I'm like, okay, all we've got to do is get to game six.
00:21:10When we get to that.
00:21:11I have not heard that.
00:21:13Nobody thinks like that.
00:21:14When you're down 3-1.
00:21:15This guy just said yes, and he's an NBA champion.
00:21:18Yeah, but he's never been down 3-1 and came back.
00:21:20I have.
00:21:21I have.
00:21:22You have.
00:21:23Against you.
00:21:23In the Western Conference Finals, we were down 3-1.
00:21:26You were never down 3-1.
00:21:27We were down 3-1 in the Western Conference Finals,
00:21:29and Phoenix was up.
00:21:30We lost the first two games in Houston, came back.
00:21:32And you won game five, one game six, and one game seven.
00:21:36I don't remember that.
00:21:37Oh, yeah, I do.
00:21:38What are you talking about?
00:21:39I was at home watching.
00:21:40You can't.
00:21:41You can't.
00:21:42You got to win this game tonight.
00:21:43Okay, that's how we did it.
00:21:44We looked ahead.
00:21:45No, you didn't do it.
00:21:45Stop it.
00:21:46We, we, dude, we.
00:21:58Why?
00:21:59This is my team.
00:22:00This is my team.
00:22:01Somebody in the ticket office getting fired.
00:22:04There are going to be plenty of New Yorkers.
00:22:08Well, and you see New York, look at them.
00:22:11I'm a New Yorker, but you see New York.
00:22:13They're allowing people to wear their other team's jerseys
00:22:16without that harassment.
00:22:18Exactly.
00:22:18I saw on social media the other day.
00:22:21They said, you know what would be a great idea,
00:22:23and if this series goes back to New York,
00:22:25put Dwayne The Rock Johnson out in front with a Wemby jersey
00:22:28and see if anybody touches it.
00:22:29That would be a good idea.
00:22:31What kind of scumbag do you have to be to throw?
00:22:35He always texts us.
00:22:38No, what kind of scumbag takes three weeks to throw at Wemby?
00:22:44Just when you think New Yorkers can't be more punkish,
00:22:47they do something like that.
00:22:48Because you have to put some thought into that
00:22:50to go home and get eggs and bring them
00:22:52and throw them at Wemby.
00:22:53It's not an indictment.
00:22:54I don't think it's an indictment.
00:22:55It's an indictment on that person.
00:22:57It is on that person.
00:22:58That person.
00:22:58And the guys who beat up that guy
00:23:00who's wearing the Spurs jersey.
00:23:01Oh, without question.
00:23:02What kind of scumbag?
00:23:03I mean, they bust a grape in a fruit fight,
00:23:06but they bring, to me, that is very juvenile,
00:23:09so it feels, I'm hoping that it was teenagers.
00:23:12Well, it don't matter.
00:23:13Like, who was carrying an egg for that long in their pocket?
00:23:15Somebody from New York.
00:23:16That's right.
00:23:17Who was carrying an egg?
00:23:18That's an idiot.
00:23:19Come on, man.
00:23:19Those are cowards.
00:23:20Those are real cowards.
00:23:22I'm throwing it from here.
00:23:25And you know what bothers me the most about it?
00:23:27They actually won the game.
00:23:29Yeah, exactly.
00:23:29That's when you know you're a punk.
00:23:31Yeah, yeah.
00:23:32That was ridiculous.
00:23:32Just to do some housecleaning here real quick,
00:23:35the argument about who was up 3-1 or who 2-2.
00:23:39So in 1994, it was a 2-2 series.
00:23:42And in 95, they were up 3-1.
00:23:44It was a 3-1.
00:23:44Yes, yes.
00:23:44So my bad.
00:23:45They were both right.
00:23:46No, I was.
00:23:47I was just saying once.
00:23:48I didn't say.
00:23:49Did you come back and win?
00:23:50And we won the series.
00:23:51Okay, cool.
00:23:52Because we thought fourth flight.
00:23:55And you couldn't stay in that moment.
00:23:56It's too much pressure in a game five
00:23:59if you're just only thinking you've got to win this one.
00:24:01You've got to play a little bit loose
00:24:03and some freedom within the movement.
00:24:05And so that's how we thought as a team.
00:24:08It worked.
00:24:09Obviously, they were a great team, the Phoenix Suns.
00:24:11But two out of three, you have to think in your mind.
00:24:15I have two possible out of three next games at home.
00:24:18So there's no way in an NBA Western Conference Final
00:24:22we're going to lose three games in one series in our hometown.
00:24:26So game six is all the marbles, baby.
00:24:28That's how you have to think.
00:24:30But it'd be nice to play game five first.
00:24:32Meantime, Scoop D'Agostino, not only does he file those reports.
00:24:36No, he brings all the sound in to the studio
00:24:40and goes through and picks the best of what we've seen and heard.
00:24:43Take a look.
00:24:45Way between misery and awesomeness.
00:24:48I don't know in a playoff.
00:24:49Toss out, bare at three.
00:24:51Off the heel.
00:24:53And in.
00:24:55Can you believe it?
00:24:56Carson gets it, fires up a three.
00:24:58No good.
00:24:59The tip, it's gone.
00:25:00It's gone.
00:25:01It's gone.
00:25:02With 1.2 remaining.
00:25:04Bevelum here at the Garden.
00:25:05They can't believe it.
00:25:07The teams don't like each other.
00:25:09Jokic and McDaniels square up.
00:25:12Go out.
00:25:12Jokic, Jamal, the whole team.
00:25:15They're all bad.
00:25:16Yeah, they're all bad defenders for me.
00:25:17Man, he's just my favorite player, man.
00:25:19I love Jaden McDaniels.
00:25:20Okay.
00:25:21Next.
00:25:23Oh, my goodness!
00:25:29Welcome to this earth!
00:25:31Oh, my God!
00:25:33I'm the Lord Supreme of the big man alliance.
00:25:36I salute you, big man.
00:25:39Whatever that man.
00:25:40Yeah.
00:25:41I'm Ernie Johnson.
00:25:42Shaq's here.
00:25:43Kenny's here.
00:25:44We're all here.
00:25:45Shaq is here.
00:25:46Rose is here.
00:25:47Kenny's here.
00:25:47I said, man, this dude is like, he's like the black Ernie Johnson.
00:25:51What do you think, Shaq?
00:25:52I'm going to fill in with the colors, bro.
00:25:53Okay, who are we playing?
00:25:55All right.
00:25:55I'm thinking what everybody's saying.
00:25:57That's a pretty man.
00:25:58Is it the eyes, Shaq?
00:25:58So you were looking in his eyes?
00:26:00I would not look him dead in the eyes.
00:26:02I made that mistake with Tom Brady one time.
00:26:04So you have a type.
00:26:07It's only weird if they make it weird.
00:26:09You know why I call him Georgia Tech?
00:26:10Why?
00:26:10Because he's a rambling wreck.
00:26:13Can you just let me talk for a second?
00:26:16Any time you wear a green jacket, somebody's going to say, hey, it's a master.
00:26:21So, Shaq, it doesn't hurt my feelings, man.
00:26:23Your mom picked it out.
00:26:26He said it best.
00:26:27I couldn't say it any better.
00:26:28Good luck.
00:26:28I think we've grown as teammates.
00:26:30We've grown as friends.
00:26:31I hated Jalen.
00:26:32I'm not at the Josh level yet, but we were.
00:26:35My ass.
00:26:36Like, do I suck?
00:26:38Do you think the amount of sissy through you today shows that he actually likes you as a person?
00:26:44Nah.
00:26:44Okay.
00:26:45Josh is not a friend.
00:26:46Brunson!
00:26:48I mean, I hate to say this about my family, but I care as much about this as anything.
00:26:54I love my wife and kids, but...
00:26:56I am no villain.
00:26:57I'm a nice guy with two kids and a wife.
00:26:59I'm glad your family is there to share it with you.
00:27:01Go out back and kill some and cook a nice meal.
00:27:05Don't say anything.
00:27:06I see it.
00:27:07Don't say anything.
00:27:08You got chicken wings.
00:27:09You're supposed to be asking questions.
00:27:10You ain't got chicken wings.
00:27:12Them wings are hitting up.
00:27:14They ain't hitting yet.
00:27:15Little, little, little, little, yes.
00:27:16Great concentration, given what's going on behind you.
00:27:19I'm doing the party now, Ernie.
00:27:21I'm going to join the party now.
00:27:22There it is.
00:27:23Yeah, it's kind of...
00:27:24You got it, girl.
00:27:26Go, girl.
00:27:28Hey, man.
00:27:28Stop, Shaq.
00:27:29Before you hurt somebody.
00:27:30Oh, come on, man.
00:27:30You almost broke the Golden Girls Cup, man.
00:27:33Who let the dogs out?
00:27:36Who, who, who?
00:27:37Who let the dogs out?
00:27:39Who, who, who?
00:27:40Shaqeel, I hate Charles Barkley O'Neal.
00:27:44Listen, man.
00:27:45I'm so proud you got your GED.
00:27:48Hey, kick him in the face.
00:27:50Hey, hey, hey, hey.
00:27:52Sam, what is wrong with you, Grandpa?
00:27:55Who, who, who?
00:27:57Chuck, I'm going to try your Chapsick.
00:28:02That's...
00:28:03That's crazy.
00:28:04Start spreading the news.
00:28:09Driving the news.
00:28:11Shaq working some resuscitation.
00:28:14Hey, hey.
00:28:15He's going to the border.
00:28:16New way, ladies and gentlemen.
00:28:17That's more ridiculous.
00:28:19I'm leaving today.
00:28:20I want to be a part of it.
00:28:23The Knicks are now one win away
00:28:25from their second consecutive sweep.
00:28:28Analytically, we want two out of three.
00:28:30Hell no.
00:28:31Never a huge analytics guy.
00:28:33They're a lamppost to a drunk person.
00:28:35You can lean on them, but it won't get you home.
00:28:37New York.
00:28:38New York.
00:28:39We got New York, Shaq.
00:28:41Street meat.
00:28:42I went there today, brother.
00:28:44Did you?
00:28:44I did.
00:28:45I got that white sauce and that yellow rice.
00:28:47What you saying, Chuck?
00:28:48New York.
00:28:49I don't know, baby.
00:28:50You want that street meat.
00:28:52We want that street meat.
00:28:56I'm just going to be the fourth reason
00:28:57that these dudes are being silly.
00:29:00How lucky are we to be doing what we're doing
00:29:03and it's such a pleasure to be here at the NBA Finals.
00:29:05I forgot you talked about that dude's monolith.
00:29:08Uh-oh.
00:29:09Had to defend myself.
00:29:10The Iceman Comer.
00:29:11There she is.
00:29:12The Iceman Comer.
00:29:13George Girvin, San Antonio,
00:29:16an NBA legend, joins us next.
00:29:301977, Butterfly Collar.
00:29:32Walk outside with that on and San Antonio.
00:29:34Now you'll burn up.
00:29:38George, tell us about that finger roll from the free door.
00:29:41Oh, yeah, that was my patented.
00:29:42That was my patented shot.
00:29:43One thing I could do was finger roll.
00:29:48You're going to do that.
00:29:49Oh, yeah.
00:29:50You're going to do that.
00:29:53Absolutely classic.
00:29:54And, man, George Girvin joining us here in San Antonio.
00:29:58Thanks so much for taking some time.
00:30:00We really appreciate it.
00:30:03Oh, yeah.
00:30:03Thanks for having me, man.
00:30:05Watch y'all for years.
00:30:06And I'm glad to be a part of this.
00:30:08That thing still brings a smile to your face, doesn't that spot?
00:30:11You know, Nike was good to me
00:30:13and gave me an opportunity to tell people about that finger roll.
00:30:17So, yes.
00:30:18A lot of people saw that finger roll, too.
00:30:20But I will say this, Ice, you know, obviously, you know,
00:30:22you lived in Houston as well.
00:30:23We saw, we did a lot of things together.
00:30:25Came, spoke at my camp one time.
00:30:28Iceman is my favorite person in the whole world.
00:30:30But there's no kid that grew up in America
00:30:32that wanted to play basketball
00:30:34that didn't have this poster over their wall.
00:30:36If you didn't have this poster, you were not official.
00:30:39That is the all-time best basketball pitcher of all time.
00:30:44Iceman sitting on blocks of ice.
00:30:46Nothing better than that picture ever
00:30:49in the history of basketball pitchers.
00:30:51Number one, I just want to say, number one,
00:30:54obviously everybody knows you, a great, great player,
00:30:56but you have always been one of the nicest men
00:30:59that I've ever been around.
00:31:02And, you know, guys like yourself,
00:31:03y'all made the NBA and the ABA what it was today,
00:31:07this amazing machine.
00:31:09First of all, how did you get the name Iceman?
00:31:12Fatty Taylor gave me that name back in the 70s
00:31:14when I was playing.
00:31:15You know, I'm from Detroit.
00:31:16I had my own style, and I had my own style of playing,
00:31:20and I didn't sweat much,
00:31:22and Fatty just started calling me Ice, man,
00:31:26and it stuck with me, man, back in the 70s.
00:31:28It wasn't because of that Eldorado also
00:31:30that you were driving at the time?
00:31:31Well, yeah, I drove Eldorado.
00:31:34Come on, I know the history, Ice.
00:31:35I know the history.
00:31:36You know, I wore Gators all the time and Borsalini hats, so.
00:31:40All right, Smat, I've been knowing you a long time.
00:31:42Introduce you to our good friend Fred.
00:31:44What do you think is going to happen in the game tonight?
00:31:46I know you're in Spurs.
00:31:48You live 40 miles out here in San Antonio.
00:31:51What's your prediction of tonight's game?
00:31:53These boys are going to give you all they got.
00:31:54You know, I kind of heard Kenny talking about it
00:31:57one game at a time.
00:31:58These guys think they can sweep now,
00:32:00and that's the attitude you got to have.
00:32:02They are that good.
00:32:04They are a very good defensive team, and they can score.
00:32:07They just have mental lapses and stuff,
00:32:09and that's what's been killing them down the stretch.
00:32:11But I think they didn't learn from their mistake
00:32:14being up 29 and losing.
00:32:16Ice, you've seen so much in your career.
00:32:18You've seen so many players in your career.
00:32:20What's it like to have a front row seat
00:32:23to see Victor Wimbanyama here in early stages of his career?
00:32:27Well, you know, I grew up around big men.
00:32:29This one first, Shaq.
00:32:31You know, I saw him play in high school,
00:32:33but I came up, you know, with David Robinson and Tim Duncan.
00:32:37We got something real different with Victor Wimbanyama.
00:32:40He's real different.
00:32:41He's like an octopus.
00:32:42He can score.
00:32:43You know, he can dribble the ball.
00:32:45He can, you know, he defends.
00:32:47He's a real special basketball player, and he's intelligent,
00:32:51and he loves the game, and his character is beautiful.
00:32:54So he's got all the great things to be a great player for a long time.
00:32:58Ice, when you, what does the city,
00:33:01I mean, obviously, you've been here.
00:33:03How long have you been here now?
00:33:04I've been here 50 years.
00:33:05What is so special?
00:33:07I know it's unique because it's one of the few cities that don't, like, don't have,
00:33:11oh, this is going to be pretty good right here.
00:33:13That's a good list to be on.
00:33:15Ain't it nice?
00:33:16Oh, yeah, man.
00:33:16I can put the ball in the hole.
00:33:19So what is this?
00:33:21Because they got a tremendous fan base here.
00:33:24I think it's a wonderful city.
00:33:26What's special about San Antonio?
00:33:28Man, the people, Charles.
00:33:30I mean, the people here have been beautiful.
00:33:32The ownership has been beautiful.
00:33:35Obviously, I've been here from the beginning, and then I saw it grow over the years.
00:33:40And, you know, being a small market and, you know, having that family atmosphere,
00:33:44that's what makes San Antonio so great, the culture.
00:33:47I mean, everything about San Antonio I love.
00:33:50You know, you hear a lot of comparisons to old school, new players.
00:33:53This guy's like Mike.
00:33:54This guy's like Kareem.
00:33:54Have you ever heard anybody say he reminds me of George Gerber?
00:33:59I ain't never heard it, and I'm not expecting to hear it.
00:34:04You know what?
00:34:04The funny thing is, Ice one time was speaking at my basketball camp,
00:34:08and he's doing a shooting drill, and he's making, like, 15, 20 in a row,
00:34:12but he's giving stats.
00:34:13He's like, who do you think has the most points in a quarter in an NBA game?
00:34:17Boom.
00:34:18You're looking at him.
00:34:18Who do you think has the most points in an NBA playoff game?
00:34:22Boom.
00:34:22You're looking at him.
00:34:23So the whole time, but, Ice, I do have something,
00:34:26and I just thought about it when Shaq asked that question.
00:34:28If you were 7'5", would you play like Wimbledon Yama?
00:34:33The game is actually, if you really think about it, it's pretty similar.
00:34:39Well, you know, 100%.
00:34:40I mean, I would say at first that I see similarities to him in me.
00:34:45Yes.
00:34:46And I really do.
00:34:47I mean, he can flat out shoot the ball.
00:34:49He can score.
00:34:50He can use both hands.
00:34:52He can dunk on you from anywhere.
00:34:55The kid is real special.
00:34:57Yeah, because you used to dunk left hand, right hand.
00:34:59Yes.
00:34:59Shoot the jumper.
00:35:00But he could finger roll.
00:35:02He could shoot that Springer.
00:35:04He is a Hall of Famer.
00:35:06And, Ice, you're a gentleman of the highest order.
00:35:11And it just is great for us to be here and have you with us.
00:35:14You're not around royalty.
00:35:16Here's that El Dorado.
00:35:17Give us a call, Fred.
00:35:18Oh, man.
00:35:20Hey, Ernie.
00:35:20Fred, give him a call.
00:35:22Hey, and Ice tell him, you can hit that little white ball, too, can't you?
00:35:25Oh, yeah.
00:35:26I can put that ball in the hole, too.
00:35:29Here was the failed attempt to recreate the Iceman.
00:35:32Put that on a t-shirt.
00:35:35Man, this was around royalty.
00:35:37You had to around it much.
00:35:38Appreciate your brother and man.
00:35:39Thanks, guys.
00:35:40Hey.
00:35:41Always.
00:35:42Nice, guys.
00:35:43Nice, dog.
00:35:49We welcome you back.
00:35:51NBA tip-off is presented by American Express.
00:35:54San Antonio's down three games to one.
00:35:57How will Victor Romanyama and the Spurs respond after blowing that 29-point lead in Game 4
00:36:03and putting the New York Knicks on the verge of their first championship since 1973?
00:36:09Wow.
00:36:10The story will be told tonight here in Game 5.
00:36:13and we are joined by John Turturro, one of the best actors,
00:36:16one of the most versatile actors you will ever find,
00:36:18and one of the most rabid Knick fans you will ever find as well.
00:36:23And it looks like, John, it looks like half the city of New York is in this building.
00:36:27Yeah, I know.
00:36:28A lot of people came.
00:36:29Yeah.
00:36:29I mean, yeah.
00:36:30I guess we're starved fan base.
00:36:33We are starved fan base.
00:36:35Hey, so, game three and four was the craziest atmosphere I've ever been in.
00:36:43Even when I've played in big games before, and obviously you've been in this a long time.
00:36:48Oh, can you introduce me to John?
00:36:49Is it Leguizmo?
00:36:50Leguizmo.
00:36:51I want to meet him.
00:36:53Yeah, he's funny.
00:36:53I love that guy right there.
00:36:54He's funny.
00:36:55Yes, he is.
00:36:56Yeah.
00:36:56But have you ever seen anything like you saw in Game 3 and 4?
00:36:59No, I think Game 3 was very hard to get into, and it was very tense, the atmosphere.
00:37:05And I felt like there was too much expectation.
00:37:08For Game 3?
00:37:09For Game 3 on the Knicks.
00:37:10Yeah.
00:37:10I felt like they were really tight at the beginning of the game.
00:37:13It just was a different atmosphere.
00:37:15I'm asking all my friends.
00:37:17I'm asking all my family.
00:37:18I just asked the great George Gervin, give me your prediction for tonight's game.
00:37:21I think it'll be a close game, but I think if it's close, the Knicks will pull it out.
00:37:27You know, Charles asked you during the break.
00:37:29You said you had your season tickets since 1985.
00:37:33Right, that's right.
00:37:34I've been a Knicks fan since 1968.
00:37:37Since 1968.
00:37:38Do you remember the first Knicks game that you've ever gone to?
00:37:42Yeah, I did.
00:37:43It was against the Celtics.
00:37:47After they won the title 69-70, I got set up in the blue seats.
00:37:51with my mom and my brother.
00:37:53Wow.
00:37:54Yeah.
00:37:54And then here we are, 53 years.
00:37:57Well, no.
00:37:57No, that was even more.
00:37:59You caught the 73.
00:37:59You caught the 73.
00:38:00Yes, I did.
00:38:01And now you're waiting for the next one.
00:38:03That's right.
00:38:03Okay.
00:38:03Yeah.
00:38:04You know what's crazy?
00:38:04Everybody we talk to, like Spike and Eric's celebrity, y'all all started on the roof.
00:38:11Yeah.
00:38:11Like, everybody's at business.
00:38:12You know, we couldn't afford Knicks tickets.
00:38:14We all started on the roof.
00:38:15I still like sitting up high.
00:38:17Really?
00:38:17Because sometimes I sit up high, the fans, it's a different atmosphere.
00:38:20A different atmosphere.
00:38:20It's a way different atmosphere.
00:38:22When I sat up high for game two in Cleveland, because I share my season tickets, and this
00:38:28guy, when we're 22 down, he turned to me.
00:38:31He was sweating.
00:38:32He was a little drunk, and he said, we've got him just where we want him.
00:38:36It was like seven minutes and a half, and I said, really?
00:38:39I said, all right, all right.
00:38:41What was really going through your head the other night, though, when you look up at the
00:38:45scoreboard at halftime?
00:38:46That was like complete despair, and I've never seen a game like that.
00:38:51Nobody ever had, John.
00:38:53I never saw a game like that.
00:38:54So when you saw Ananobi do that?
00:38:57It was just, everybody was just grabbing onto each other, you know.
00:39:01It becomes like a small town, New York, at times like this.
00:39:04Indeed.
00:39:05If the Knicks happened to pull this off, where would you put Brunson in the New York Knick hierarchy?
00:39:09Well, he'd be up there.
00:39:11He'd be up there.
00:39:12All right.
00:39:12I mean, Clyde was on my wall, so I can't go, you know, Willis was, you know, one of my
00:39:19main guys.
00:39:19Patrick Ewing.
00:39:20You know, Patrick, you know, so, but he'd be up there with those guys.
00:39:25We saw the picture of you with the Clyde basketball card a minute ago.
00:39:30When's the first time you met Clyde, and what was it like to finally meet the guy?
00:39:34Well, I met Willis Reed first because I went to his show.
00:39:36He was MVP because he won three MVPs that season, and I got tickets to see him,
00:39:42and I met him when I was a little kid.
00:39:44But I met Clyde when I was an adult, you know what I mean?
00:39:48Really?
00:39:48I was already an actor.
00:39:50I never met him before that.
00:39:52You know, Clyde, obviously, Clyde was my favorite player.
00:39:55I went to the Walt Frazier basketball camp when I was nine years old.
00:39:58Yeah.
00:39:58I won a hot shot contest and went there, and that was the first time I met him.
00:40:03It was like, that's like meeting a historical figure when you see Clyde at that time.
00:40:10Yeah, man, he was what Brunson is.
00:40:12The funny thing is, they play similar.
00:40:15Right.
00:40:15Mid-range game.
00:40:17Back up the guys.
00:40:18Super fast, backing guys in.
00:40:19Right.
00:40:19Not super fast, but super strong at their position.
00:40:22Right.
00:40:22So Clyde and Brunson are about equal in terms of what they do talent-wise.
00:40:27Yeah.
00:40:27It is.
00:40:28It's great having you with us.
00:40:29Thanks for taking it on.
00:40:30This is my favorite show.
00:40:32I want to tell you guys right now.
00:40:33I mean, I love your show.
00:40:35It's our favorite show, too.
00:40:36Yeah, well, you guys are great, really.
00:40:39360 basketball.
00:40:40Yeah.
00:40:41He's quoting my lines from Do the Right Thing.
00:40:43Do the Right Thing.
00:40:44Hey, man.
00:40:45And by the way, John, the night of.
00:40:50Oh, my goodness.
00:40:52Thank you very much.
00:40:53It's such an honor to meet you guys.
00:40:54It's an honor.
00:40:55Thank you.
00:40:56Pleasure's ours.
00:40:57The pleasure's ours.
00:40:58Thank you.
00:40:59We will take a break.
00:41:00Do the right thing.
00:41:00That was a great move.
00:41:01here on ESPN as we get set for.
00:41:05There he is.
00:41:06Game five of the NBA Finals.
00:41:07Why do you got my people in the pizza store?
00:41:11Yeah, that's my man.
00:41:14Thank you to get you guys.
00:41:16Go ahead.
00:41:17Go ahead.
00:41:17Go ahead.
00:41:18Go ahead.
00:41:26Live from the NBA Finals,
00:41:28NBA Tip-Off is presented by the powerful backing
00:41:30of American Express.
00:41:34So we welcome you back.
00:41:36Victor Wimbanyama on the floor.
00:41:39Spurs trying to stay alive in this series.
00:41:41You know, Chuck, we were having dinner last night
00:41:43at our favorite spot.
00:41:44Yes.
00:41:45Nona's here in San Antonio.
00:41:48That place is fire.
00:41:49Yeah, it is.
00:41:50Thank you, Nona.
00:41:51But you were saying,
00:41:52I just don't know what's going to happen in game five.
00:41:55You got a better read now?
00:41:56I don't, actually, Ernie.
00:41:58I, I, to me, it's all going to be psychological for the Spurs.
00:42:04Like, that, that, that wasn't a standing eight the other night.
00:42:08That was a damn knockout.
00:42:10And, you know, boxing, how much I love football and boxing.
00:42:13And you talk to great boxing trainers like I have in the past.
00:42:17They would talk about some guys, once they get knocked out,
00:42:20they're never the same.
00:42:22And some guys can recover and become great.
00:42:25I think it's going to be very difficult for the Spurs,
00:42:28even though they are the system.
00:42:29To be down 29 points, I know they said players like us,
00:42:33especially in this point of the season, we have amnesia.
00:42:36But it's something you're going to remember the rest of your life.
00:42:38And I feel for a guy like De'Aaron Fox.
00:42:40Because I kind of know what that feels like,
00:42:42being down by one and missing the free throw.
00:42:43And it's your fault, it's your fault.
00:42:45It's your fault if you did this, if you did that.
00:42:47So I'm kind of worried about the Spurs mental.
00:42:49Hopefully they prove me wrong and say they can bounce back.
00:42:52But, you know, losing a 29-point lead,
00:42:54I think it's very, very devastating.
00:42:56I'm excited to see how they react, to be honest with you, Ernie.
00:42:59And Victor has got to set the tone early and often.
00:43:02You've got about the last 20 seconds here, Jet.
00:43:04My logical line would say that you make the NBA Finals,
00:43:08you will not lose three games in a row at home.
00:43:10It's just a logical mind.
00:43:12You can lose two, but to lose three games at home,
00:43:16the Knicks are going to have to win this at Madison Square Garden.
00:43:19That's going to do it for our time on ESPN here in the pregame.
00:43:23But don't despair.
00:43:24We're just going to show up on ABC.
00:43:26Sidney Sweeney is it?
00:43:27Right around the corner.
00:43:30Everybody's a New York Knicks fan now.
00:43:31Hey, Jack Charles.
00:43:32Hey, Charles.
00:43:33Come on, man.
00:43:33Everybody's a Knicks fan now.
00:43:35Pat, wish you good luck to have that, Pat.
00:43:51San Antonio, Texas, the site of Game 5 of the NBA Finals.
00:43:56San Antonio dropped the first two in their gym in this series.
00:44:00Put him in an 0-2 hole right away.
00:44:02They closed it to 2-1 and then blew a 29-point lead in Game 4,
00:44:08so they find themselves down three games to one to Jalen Brunson and the New York Knicks,
00:44:13who are a win away from their first NBA title in 53 years.
00:44:19And there's the guy who sealed the deal the other night, O.G. Ananobi.
00:44:23You'll hear from him in just a second.
00:44:26As we welcome you here on ADC to NBA Tip-Off, presented by American Express.
00:44:33Ernie Johnson with Shaquille O'Neal and Kenny the Jet Smith and Charles Barkley as we get set for Game
00:44:395.
00:44:40Thank you for being with us.
00:44:43So 1973 was the last time.
00:44:46You know what I think would be entertaining for you?
00:44:48To see the quality of video available from that championship year as we take a look at the highlights.
00:44:55This is not FBI surveillance tape.
00:44:58This is what we've got.
00:45:00Oh, they got better.
00:45:02They're just doing it extra.
00:45:03How about that?
00:45:04They're doing it extra.
00:45:05The video was not that bad.
00:45:07Dollar Bill Bradley.
00:45:09They're just making this up.
00:45:10How about it?
00:45:11They're not making it.
00:45:12It wasn't this bad.
00:45:13Willis Reed.
00:45:13Oh, my God.
00:45:14The captain.
00:45:14How many the Hall of Famers they have on that team?
00:45:16Oh, my gosh.
00:45:17Earl the Pearl Monroe going to connect.
00:45:20The Pearl, brother.
00:45:21They had five Hall of Famers.
00:45:22Here's another.
00:45:23Jerry Lucas.
00:45:24Oh, that's another one.
00:45:25Geez.
00:45:27And there he is.
00:45:28Your guy, Clyde.
00:45:29Clyde, playing.
00:45:31Brunson is the new version of Walt Frazier.
00:45:34If anyone who watched him play back then.
00:45:36Oh, looking like Shaq.
00:45:37Throw down Will.
00:45:38Will would have killed Shaq.
00:45:40It would have been fun.
00:45:41But see right there, that's Brunson.
00:45:43Pull up.
00:45:43That's the same moves that he does.
00:45:45Young fellas and ladies and gentlemen.
00:45:47That is the same player.
00:45:49Oh, drawing kick.
00:45:51Yes.
00:45:52Okay.
00:45:53All right, TK.
00:45:54What up, Phil Jackson?
00:45:55Yes.
00:45:55No, that's Phil Bradley.
00:45:57Okay.
00:45:57Phil Jackson.
00:45:58That's Phil right there.
00:45:59That's Phil right, Jackson.
00:46:00I see you, Phil Jackson.
00:46:02Yes.
00:46:02Phil Jackson.
00:46:03Oh, give me that.
00:46:05Will with the block, but it's goaltender.
00:46:07I don't know about that.
00:46:09Who is that?
00:46:10Bob Delaney.
00:46:10It's too late to review.
00:46:12All the playwright, Bob Delaney.
00:46:14Bob Delaney missed another call.
00:46:15You're right, Shaq.
00:46:16102 to 93 was your final score.
00:46:19There were remarkable similarities, too, between that series in 1973, which was the Knicks' last championship, and this one here
00:46:27in 2026.
00:46:29The Knicks, a lot of close games in that series, in fact, all four of those first two coming down,
00:46:34like, through the last two minutes.
00:46:36Through the first four games of that series in 1973, they were decided by a total of 16 points.
00:46:43Same story this year in 2026.
00:46:46The Knicks went on the road with a chance to win the series in 73 and got it done, and
00:46:52they are on the road in San Antonio tonight trying to put away the San Antonio Spurs.
00:46:58So, 53 years in between, but similarities for sure.
00:47:02Similarities for sure.
00:47:04You know, if you look at – I was talking about this earlier.
00:47:09If you want to look at historical, Walt Frazier and Rick Brunson, they play the same.
00:47:14And not Rick and Jalen Brunson play the same way.
00:47:17You know, a power over power guard shooting.
00:47:19He's going to create a legacy if they're able to pull this game out tonight or at any time in
00:47:24this series.
00:47:24That is far beyond anything in this basketball probably be mine because New Yorkers, they keep people on a pedestal
00:47:32for long after they have done.
00:47:34So, this is an interesting game tonight, but it is not over by any stretch of the imagination this series.
00:47:39But, I'll tell you what, the thing that's been impressive, Shaq.
00:47:42Oh, my God, I love that guy right there.
00:47:44John Carlos Esposito.
00:47:46John Turturro, who's just joined us moments ago.
00:47:49But here's what's been impressive.
00:47:51When the Knicks have had a chance to close somebody out, Shaq, they have taken advantage.
00:47:57They've had three opportunities so far.
00:47:59First series against Atlanta, they win and clinch the series, they win by 51.
00:48:03In Philadelphia, they complete the sweep by 30.
00:48:07Against Cleveland, by 37.
00:48:10All of those games on the road, and here we go, on the road again with a chance to close
00:48:16out.
00:48:17They definitely know how to close the team out, and, you know, Carl Anthony Townsend said it.
00:48:20They really haven't played well yet.
00:48:22So, if they play well like they played in all the other closeout games, it might even be a blowout
00:48:26tonight.
00:48:27I'm kind of worried about the Spurs.
00:48:28Can they bounce back from such a devastating loss?
00:48:31But they know how to close out.
00:48:32I really, I'm only concerned about the Spurs tonight, Ernie.
00:48:35Like I say, I think, number one, man, I just don't know how you get up off the floor after
00:48:42that game.
00:48:42And, like, listen, all those sound bites are useless, okay, because they're going to say that.
00:48:47But, like, that's a devastating way to lose a game.
00:48:52Like, because if you come back home 2-2, you've got all the momentum.
00:48:56But the blowout 29-point lead, and listen, they're still up 20 in the fourth quarter.
00:49:02That's what was worth it.
00:49:03About nine minutes to play.
00:49:04And then, of course, it was the image that will live in the minds of New York Knicks fans forever.
00:49:09It was O.G. Ananobi coming out of nowhere with the tip that turned out to be the game winner.
00:49:15And a short time ago, Malika Andrews had a chance to speak with O.G. Ananobi.
00:49:21Ernie, thank you.
00:49:22O.G., you are coming off the largest comeback in finals history, and you had the game-winning tip in.
00:49:28I know it's go-ahead to the next game, but how do you flip that switch after such a high?
00:49:33I mean, in the moment, you're excited, you're happy you won.
00:49:36You celebrate every win, but like you said, you just have to move on to the next game, get ready
00:49:39for the game five.
00:49:40But be honest with me, have you re-watched that play, and if so, how many times?
00:49:44I've seen it a lot.
00:49:45Just from watching film and going over the game point and stuff, I've watched it a lot.
00:49:49Well, and I hope you enjoy it a little bit when you're watching it as well.
00:49:52But let's flip the switch here to game five.
00:49:54You all have had a lot of success in closeout games.
00:49:56You've won them by at least 30 points, all on the road this postseason.
00:49:59What is it about this group that demands a higher level of focus in these games?
00:50:03Just knowing that, like, it's the hardest game, the elimination game's the hardest game.
00:50:07So coming out from the start with energy, attention to detail, executing our game plan.
00:50:12And, OG, I'm looking around here and estimating that it's going to be maybe 30%, 40% Knicks fans.
00:50:17What are you expecting from them on the road as you guys try to win a first championship in over
00:50:2150 years?
00:50:22They're going to be rowdy, loud, excited, happy, just backing us like they always do.
00:50:26OG, I really appreciate the time.
00:50:27Thank you so much.
00:50:28Thank you.
00:50:28Ernie, back to you.
00:50:29Thank you very much, Malika.
00:50:31So, 33-point game for Ananobi, capped by this.
00:50:36Look, that was only the second.
00:50:38He's only the second guy with a 30-point game on the New York side.
00:50:43Brunson's had eight, but that was the first guy other than Brunson to score 30 in a game in these
00:50:48playoffs.
00:50:49Listen, I'm always conscious about the others because the others definitely helped me win championships.
00:50:53You know, this guy has been playing great all playoffs, especially in the finals.
00:50:56We don't really talk about him a lot because there's a lot of focus on Brunson and Catt, but this
00:51:01guy right here has won a lot of games for them, including that game.
00:51:04So, in my opinion, if they win tonight, I think he's the MVP.
00:51:08Well, we'll see what happens tonight, too.
00:51:09But I think also, you know, he is a mismatch because he's a true power forward.
00:51:13And at times, you know, the Spurs will play small, and then now he has a big advantage of being
00:51:20at 6'7", 6'8", and what is physicality.
00:51:23The other thing is how smart that play was.
00:51:25He didn't just assume that Brunson was going to make that shot.
00:51:29His first instinct was run to the rim.
00:51:31And that is what you look for for a great basketball player.
00:51:34Yeah, great to take on a free run.
00:51:36Yeah, free run, but it was his first instinct as well to run to the rim.
00:51:40Hey, Chuck, here's another trend that continued in Game 4.
00:51:44Oh, the bad first start, first quarter.
00:51:46First quarter, the Knicks are minus 47 in this series, yet they leave the series 3-1.
00:51:53If I didn't see this series for myself, I'd be like, no, these stats can't be correct, and they up
00:51:593-1.
00:52:01What's, I think, Carl Antown said it.
00:52:04He said the elephant in the room.
00:52:06Yo, man, they haven't had a good, they haven't had a good game yet.
00:52:12So, I think tonight is important because I think it's important for the Knicks to get off to a good
00:52:18start tonight for a couple reasons.
00:52:20They can't give the Spurs a free game, in my opinion, because they've got to put mental and physical stress
00:52:27on the Spurs.
00:52:29Because if they come out and take this game for granted, there'll be so much pressure on their ass Tuesday.
00:52:35But for me, they've got to put mental and physical stress on the Spurs early in this game.
00:52:41I agree with Chuck.
00:52:42The only thing that separates greatness is anxiety.
00:52:44And if you can create anxiety for the other opponent, then that's when they don't play their normal way.
00:52:50And that's what happened in game four.
00:52:52And the Knicks have to put that anxiety if they try to come out with a NBA championship.
00:52:57But the best thing I like about the Knicks, even though they have been down, they have experience in coming
00:53:01back,
00:53:01and they never panic in those situations.
00:53:03We saw that the other night.
00:53:04Absolutely.
00:53:05It's a 3-1 series lead.
00:53:07Among those in attendance tonight, Charles Oakley.
00:53:10He has to come down here.
00:53:11They won't let him in the garden.
00:53:13So at least he'll be here for the celebrations they win tonight.
00:53:18Yeah, when Shaq and Chuck play.
00:53:20Hey, listen.
00:53:21Hey, listen.
00:53:22It's not going to lie.
00:53:23It looks like that.
00:53:25New Yorkers making their presence felt early.
00:53:28Oh, my God.
00:53:29They're like pack rats, man.
00:53:30Here in San Antonio.
00:53:43Live from the NBA Finals, NBA Tip-Off is presented by the powerful backing of American Express.
00:53:58Live from the NBA Finals, NBA Tip-Off is presented by the powerful backing of American Express.
00:54:07This is the scene.
00:54:09San Antonio, as we get set for Game 5, it's going to tip off at 8.43 Eastern Time.
00:54:17Remarkably tight when you look at the numbers in this series.
00:54:20I mean, the Knicks have scored eight more points than San Antonio.
00:54:25They have grabbed three more rebounds, three more offensive rebounds.
00:54:29They've got three more turnovers than the Spurs do.
00:54:32It's been tight all the way through.
00:54:34And again, we make the point that, look, San Antonio, I'm not saying they should be up.
00:54:41But as Mitch Johnson said, they've had four winnable games.
00:54:45They've had the lead with under two minutes to go in four games.
00:54:48What has been the biggest problem in your mind, Shaq, with San Antonio closing the deal?
00:54:54The great George Gervin said it.
00:54:55They've had mental lapses.
00:54:57You know, they have been chewing their youth.
00:55:00You know, we talk about Darren Fox.
00:55:02He's not young, that last bonehead playmate.
00:55:04But they've just been having mental lapses.
00:55:06But the good thing for them, especially mentally, even though they're down 3-1,
00:55:10they can say, you know what, we gave three games away.
00:55:14We know that if we play well, 48 minutes, we have a chance.
00:55:18And I have to agree with Kenny.
00:55:20But get that one game out of think time.
00:55:21I'm saying to myself, okay, we're going to make history.
00:55:24We're going to win the championship.
00:55:26That's how you've got to think.
00:55:27Yeah, I agree with Shaq on this regard.
00:55:29It's like, if you're thinking, let's just stay in this moment,
00:55:33it might be too much for you.
00:55:34because we've come down and we've lost a game.
00:55:37And you will think about that.
00:55:38But if you're foresight and you're saying,
00:55:41we're going to be in New York and we're thinking about New York,
00:55:45you play a little bit freer and you have a little bit more open thought
00:55:50in terms of shot selection and everything else.
00:55:53Look, you're the one who, you guys played the game.
00:55:55But to me, if you think it's too much pressure saying,
00:55:58oh, we've got to win this game,
00:55:59how much pressure is it when you say, we've got to win three in a row?
00:56:02No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, because no, the pressure switch,
00:56:05when you go to game six,
00:56:07all the marbles are on both teams now.
00:56:10Because what you're saying is.
00:56:11You've got to make sure that that happens by focusing on this game.
00:56:14Now, I, I, I, I, okay.
00:56:16This is what it does.
00:56:16When you dream about something so big
00:56:18and a part of your dream coming true,
00:56:20it just gives you more confidence.
00:56:22If I'm saying to myself, we're going to win the championship
00:56:24and we win this game and then we get to the next game
00:56:26and we win the next game,
00:56:28my dream is about to come true.
00:56:29Game one is game two.
00:56:30I'm locked in in all these games.
00:56:31I'm down 3-1.
00:56:33I have to have a delusion of grandeur.
00:56:35Different players think differently.
00:56:37Yeah, believe that certain things are different.
00:56:39Yeah, and I, I disagree with both of them
00:56:41because I think tonight,
00:56:43I think it's easy for the Knicks to win tonight, Ernie.
00:56:47Because I do agree,
00:56:49there will be so much pressure on them in game six
00:56:52because they're going to have to win game six.
00:56:55I, honestly, in my personal opinion,
00:56:57I think this is an easier game for the Knicks to win tonight.
00:57:01Yes.
00:57:01Because all this, all the pressure is on the Spurs.
00:57:04The one thing they got to do
00:57:06is put pressure mentally and physically on the Spurs.
00:57:09because, I'm not going to lie, Ernie,
00:57:12it will be so much pressure on them boys in game six.
00:57:16So I think it's an easier game for the Knicks to win tonight.
00:57:19Can you believe what you just heard
00:57:21here in San Antonio
00:57:23as the home team took the floor
00:57:26and a chorus of boos from this strong from New York?
00:57:30Yeah, but once you see the Knicks get ready to come out
00:57:33and see what their reception is
00:57:35because, man,
00:57:37it's a lot of damn, like,
00:57:39and, man, the words of Stephen A. Smith,
00:57:41there's some orange and damn blue skies in here, boy.
00:57:44It's a lot of damn orange
00:57:45from one of the best bases in the world,
00:57:48San Antonio, Texas.
00:57:50I cannot believe how much blue and orange crap I see here.
00:57:53Yeah, this is, you know,
00:57:55when you haven't done something for 53 years,
00:57:58people want to be part of that moment.
00:58:00And so people will do a lot of things
00:58:02and flying in, being around it, and being a part of it.
00:58:05I don't know how we got a great picture of this,
00:58:07but we couldn't get great video.
00:58:08But here is Walt Frazier, you know, doing his thing.
00:58:12But I think also...
00:58:13You know what's funny, Kenny?
00:58:14People have been living here 30 years,
00:58:16got farms and cows and chickens,
00:58:18but as soon as the New Yorkers come here,
00:58:20I'm from New York.
00:58:21I'm from New York.
00:58:23Hey, I wish...
00:58:24I'm going to tell you, I wish I owned the airline
00:58:26because they all made some money
00:58:27from New York to San Antonio
00:58:29this last week and a half
00:58:31because, man, I'm glad...
00:58:34I just want to thank ESPN, man.
00:58:36This is our first finals.
00:58:37We couldn't have got better
00:58:39from a great fan base in San Antonio
00:58:41who are the most amazing fans.
00:58:43And these people in New York, man,
00:58:44it's been so exciting.
00:58:46I mean, listen...
00:58:47No, the story as compelling as that
00:58:49as this the end of the 53-year drought.
00:58:52And so the Knicks could be on the verge
00:58:54of something extremely special
00:58:56as they take the floor here in San Antonio.
00:59:06Pretty even, pretty even.
00:59:14You see, as a marketing mind,
00:59:18I would have had a boom machine
00:59:19inside of the thing coming out
00:59:21as a playing fake boos as well.
00:59:24I don't think they needed it.
00:59:25I would have done that.
00:59:27Hey, I tell you,
00:59:28you know, obviously Spurro's got to come out
00:59:30with desperation.
00:59:32The Knicks got to weather that storm, man,
00:59:34because they can't say we can always come back.
00:59:37They got to put the Spurs under pressure
00:59:40mentally and physically.
00:59:42They can't come in here, relax,
00:59:43and get blown out
00:59:44and give these guys confidence.
00:59:47And you know what the other thing, Ernie,
00:59:49that there's things that both,
00:59:50all three of us have seen.
00:59:52When you're one game away from the championship,
00:59:54there are a lot of other things that's going on.
00:59:56There's more video people
00:59:58trying to create this championship video.
01:00:00They're trying to create these moments.
01:00:03They're having the trophy around.
01:00:05They're having ropes put down.
01:00:07They have a champagne in the locker room.
01:00:09You have to lock in if you're the New York Knicks
01:00:12and not, you have to stay in the moment
01:00:14and not look ahead.
01:00:16They have to stay in this moment
01:00:18and not look ahead
01:00:19where the Spurs, I think,
01:00:21have the exact opposite thought process.
01:00:22And something else for the Knicks.
01:00:23Let's just say the Spurs come out
01:00:25and they're whooping by 20 or 30.
01:00:27Will Mike keep them in
01:00:28or will he say, you know what,
01:00:29we exerted a lot of energy the last game?
01:00:32A lot of things.
01:00:32A lot of things can happen tonight.
01:00:34But that's why I said
01:00:36no matter who wins tonight,
01:00:38the Knicks got to put pressure
01:00:40mentally and physically
01:00:42on the Spurs
01:00:43because if they can keep the game close,
01:00:46they will feel the pressure
01:00:47down here in San Antonio.
01:00:49But they can't just give the game away
01:00:51and get blown out
01:00:52because you got to,
01:00:53Chuck, would you agree?
01:00:54They have to keep the anxiety
01:00:55on the Spurs.
01:00:56Yes, they got to keep the anxiety
01:00:57on the Spurs.
01:00:58And that's what they've not played well in.
01:01:00They have not played well
01:01:01in the last two minutes of the game.
01:01:02That's why I think
01:01:03keep the anxiety on them.
01:01:04That's why I think it's important
