00:00Unpopular opinion, but you don't actually need to love soccer to enjoy the World Cup.
00:04You just need to know these five terms so the diehard fans you might be watching with won't kick you
00:08off their couch.
00:09Offsides, aka the cause of most of the controversy that we see now with VAR in soccer.
00:15Basically, an attacker can't be closer to the goal than any of the players of the opposing team, besides the
00:21goalie, of course.
00:22The group stage.
00:23This is more math than an actual term, but basically, you win a game, three points.
00:28You tie a game, one point.
00:29And if you lose, you go home with zero points.
00:32The top two teams in every group are going to move on to playoffs.
00:35And then the eight best third place teams will go ahead and move on to playoffs as well.
00:40Penalty.
00:41Easy.
00:41If a player commits a foul in their own box against an opposing player, it's a penalty kick.
00:46This is a classic 1v1.
00:48The penalty kick taker versus the goalie to try to get a point for the team.
00:51Yellow card.
00:52These usually get thrown around for blatant misconduct or fouls that were a little too harsh, but not harsh enough
00:58to deserve a red.
00:59Two yellows leads to a red card.
01:01Red card is an automatic ejection.
01:03Very bad.
01:04It means the team is down a player for the remainder of the match, and that player who received the
01:07red card also gets a ban for a couple matches after.
01:11And stoppage time or extra time.
01:13Anything in the game that stopped the run of play, whether it was an injury, a substitution, these will all
01:18contribute to making the half last longer than the assigned 45 minutes.
01:22It really isn't over until the referee has blown that final whistle.
01:25And that is your crash course for the World Cup.
