00:02Excellent!
00:03One by one, visiting leaders from around the world take turns to greet their hosts,
00:07French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte.
00:10Here in the French spa town of Evian-les-Bains,
00:13the heads of the G7 nations, plus leaders from a range of guest countries,
00:17are gathering for the annual G7 summit.
00:19There is a lot to discuss.
00:27One big change since last year's summit is the months-long U.S.-Israeli war with Iran.
00:33Going into this meeting, there were tensions between U.S. President Donald Trump
00:37and other leaders over the war.
00:39Allies have balked at Trump's decision to go to war without consulting them,
00:43and his threats to withdraw U.S. troops from Europe for failing to back the war.
00:47Now, suddenly, peace is on the table.
00:50Trump says after a deal with Iran, there's just some final touches,
00:54and it's back to normal, including the reopening of the key Strait of Hormuz oil route.
00:59I'm very happy to say it's signed. The deal's all signed.
01:06And the strait is already partially opened.
01:09As you know, they're doing a little hunting for a couple of mines that they've already found.
01:17But essentially ships are starting to go out now. On Friday it'll be completely opened.
01:23But the deal isn't yet public, and there's a catch.
01:26Iran says U.S. ally Israel must get on board too, and end deadly strikes on Iranian proxies in Lebanon.
01:32That could be a tall order.
01:34Also on the agenda, Russia's war in Ukraine, which has not slowed down even as attention shifted to Iran.
01:43Among the most recent destruction from Russian attacks, this Kyiv landmark and UNESCO World Heritage Site,
01:56Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is among the guest leaders attending this year's G7 summit.
02:01And he says the chances of a peace deal with Russia's President Putin look grim as the war drags deeper
02:07into its fifth year.
02:08We offered Putin to meet anywhere where real decisions to end the war could be made.
02:18He does not want it.
02:20And we discussed with the U.S. and France the possibility of our meeting with Russia around the G7 with
02:29all democratic nations represented.
02:33Putin does not want it.
02:35In fact, according to EU intelligence, Russia is getting outside help.
02:40The EU says China has helped train hundreds of Russian troops who later fought in Ukraine.
02:45China says it's neutral in the war.
02:47But the EU is adding three new Chinese firms to its growing sanctions list.
02:53This adds to EU trade tensions with China and concerns about Chinese domination of critical mineral supplies.
02:59The three-day summit was always going to have challenges.
03:03Concerns about Trump's tariff threats and whether he's committed to a world order the U.S. helped build over the
03:08years.
03:09Now, a swirl of geopolitical developments throws in an extra layer of complications as the gathered leaders seek common ground
03:16at the foot of the French Alps.
03:18Klien Hwang and John Van Trieste for Taiwan Plus
03:21Yes.
