00:42All I've ever wanted para mi propio niño, hand on heart,
01:16Social media is making children unhappy.
01:20It's making it easier for bullies to harass and abuse them.
01:25And it could even be harming their mental health.
01:28Exposing them to content that is dangerous.
01:31Because that's what grabs the attention.
01:33It's designed to be addictive.
01:36Of course it is.
01:37Features like the infinite scroll.
01:41They're designed to lock you in for hours.
01:45And if nothing else, there's an opportunity cost to that.
01:51It stops children doing their homework, reading,
01:55playing with their friends outside, going to bed at decent hour.
02:00Now, that may not sound like much.
02:05But these are the activities that help a child develop into an adult.
02:10We know how important they are.
02:13We just never thought that something would come along to threaten them.
02:19To be honest, I feel for this generation.
02:24I think back to my own childhood.
02:27And yes, the early 1970s weren't always a picnic.
02:31But we didn't have to deal with anything like this.
02:35A technology that intrudes into every corner of a life.
02:39Almost impossible to escape.
02:41That records every mistake.
02:45To deal with that, as a teenager, on top of everything else.
02:51That's hard.
02:54I feel for parents, too.
02:56I mean, as a parent, you always want to make the right choice for your child.
03:00Which can face a little resistance in the teenage years, believe you me.
03:05But parents do just want to do the best for their kids.
03:09In a way, that's what being a parent means.
03:11But in this world, with this technology, it is hard as a parent to know what to do.
03:19And so I think most parents will welcome this action.
03:22I think they will welcome a clear and decisive choice.
03:26And they will welcome a government that stands by them.
03:29That supports them to do the best for their children.
03:33And that fights for their happiness and safety against the most powerful companies in the world.
03:42Because this could be a fight.
03:44And to this point, it has been a fight.
03:48Now, it doesn't have to be.
03:50I always prefer the politics of partnership.
03:53And I fundamentally believe that we must harness the power of technology to build a stronger, fairer Britain.
04:01But we must also protect our children.
04:06And so I want this message to be heard loud and clear.
04:10I am not prepared to compromise on the safety and happiness of our children.
04:15And that is why this ban must happen.
04:18And that is why this ban will happen.
04:21And that is why this ban will happen.
04:21And that is why this ban will happen.
04:21And that is why this ban will happen.
04:21Gracias.
