Rajasthan's medical infrastructure is under scrutiny as five women who recently gave birth are battling kidney failure at a government hospital in Bikaner, prompting an investigation into the causes, including potential drug contamination.
Transcript
00:00We have continuously reported on the state of maternal deaths that have taken place in Kota.
00:05Now, another deeply disturbing healthcare crisis comes from the same state, this time from Bikaner.
00:13At the PBB hospital in Bikaner, five women who recently gave birth are battling kidney failure.
00:21They fell seriously ill in the days after the delivery.
00:24Some had normal delivery, some delivered by caesarean.
00:27Doctors point to infection, very low platelet count and urinary complication before their condition crashed further.
00:35All five, as we speak, are now in intensive care and on dialysis.
00:39And one more, just 20, is on the ventilator in a very critical condition.
00:45The government says it is moving.
00:49The specialist panel has been set up.
00:52A probe has been ordered.
00:54A team has been sent to Jodhpur and the health minister has asked for detailed report.
00:59But the question every one of us is asking is that after Kota, whether this too is a case of
01:05fake or contaminated drugs,
01:07officials say they have not established a connection just yet.
01:11But we are doing our pitch to keep a very close eye on the matter.
01:15Officials insist that Bikaner is not linked to Kota, that medicine samples are being collected and tested.
01:21And the food safety commissioner has said that there is no evidence so far of any drug having gone wrong.
01:27But remember, that's the case so far.
01:29Too early to say what could have happened really.
01:33As investigations try to work out what went wrong inside the hospital, a second controversy erupted.
01:40And this one is not the one on the medicine, it is about how the men in charge of the
01:47state's health chose to respond to a crisis like this.
01:51I want to draw your attention to what the health minister, Gajendra Singh, had to say.
01:56Something that has now triggered real anger, and when you hear his sound bite, his reaction when he was asked
02:03about these deaths, will trigger you as well.
02:05But let me give you a bit of a context before we go into that.
02:08He was asked in a press briefing where he was talking to several other, you know, journalists there,
02:14whether the women had come into the hospital, hailed and hearty, and did their condition deteriorate immediately.
02:21Now what did the health minister say?
02:23He was just making a comment and he said,
02:25Nachte gaate huye aine thi, he sachme bimaar thi.
02:29Now that comment, when five women are already dead in Kota, five are battling for their life in Pika Nair,
02:37angered the people, angered the local reporters as well.
02:40They pushed back.
02:42He said the hospital saved some, you know, countless lives.
02:45He went on to show the total tally of how many lives every day are saved by that medical hospital.
02:52But out of those thousands, only two might have died while the rest go home fine,
02:56and nobody talks about those cases.
02:58Now that triggered people even more.
03:00The opposition now in the state has come down hard.
03:03State Congress Chief Gawin Singh called the remark inhuman and gross insult to motherhood
03:09and demanded the chief minister remove the health minister from his post.
03:13The minister on his part is standing his ground.
03:15He says he has ordered a full inquiry and that at the first glance he sees no sign of negligence
03:21and that strict action will follow in case of any lapse.
03:26But while the health infrastructure system keeps failing us every day in city after city,
03:33in state after state, politicians continue to show just inhuman behavior,
03:38insensitive behavior when it comes to stories like these, for families, the story is very different.
03:44Families are still waiting for answers.
03:46And for every woman watching, worrying about what maternal care in the state of Rajasthan has become,
03:54the comments by the minister doesn't instill any confidence.
03:59It only deepens the fear.
04:01At the moment, what do we know?
04:03That the probe is on, but the questions are now not just about accountability inside the hospital,
04:08but accountability in governance too.
04:11When the health minister raises such insensitive remarks,
04:15what hope do we have from the administration as well?
04:18Take a look at what exactly the entire conversation of Rajasthan's health minister was
04:24when asked about both these strategies in Kota and also Bikaner.
04:44Thank you very much.
05:21All right, my colleague Sharath has been bringing us that report as well.
05:25Let's cut across to him to understand that.
05:27Sharath, you were there at that press briefing where you hear the health minister say very clearly
05:32that whether they were singing or singing or how they were singing or how they were singing.
05:34And I saw that the whole journalists were asking,
05:39what is the way to talk about the people of the people of the poor people,
05:43who have to go to private hospitals, who don't have money for treatment for the people of the government,
05:48and who have to talk about the government, how are they talking about the government?
06:07And how are they talking about the people of the people of the people of the people of the poor
06:20people of the government?

09:13All right, we'll try and get that clip out for you to actually see what the principal had to say
09:17as well
09:18but what has essentially happened the minister there made a very insensitive remark
09:23he called upon the principal to come and address the matter and then the principal went on to make
09:29an even more ridiculous remark saying that Rajasthan people come in dehydrated and that is the reason
09:35why this has happened now we're not saying what he's saying is untrue could have been the case but
09:40that's what hospitals are for if you admit a patient who's dehydrated the first thing that you do is you
09:45ensure that they get back on their hydration and then you operate so is this a case of negligence
09:52mishandling or simply and hospital being understaffed well that's something that's something that we
10:00really have to look into but like we said we need to get to the bottom of why so many
10:05deaths are
10:06happening in one state in one city after the other
10:10that's what you here
10:10well
10:10yeah
